| Story: |
Bice writes, "I shot my elephant 12 days into the hunt. When I hit him, it was late afternoon. I got a heart shot with him quartered away. It went through the heart and into his opposite shoulder. As he turned away, I hit him next in the hip, went through the heart and into the jaw. He rolled forward and right with his front shoulder breaking down. However, he got up and was gone into the brush in a flash. We heard him crash a minute later, but as it was getting dark, we put down Monza, a Jack Russell terrier with a heart 10 times her size and courage to match! She took off on the tracks and within a minute we heard her cutting loose, barking and carrying on. There was no reply from the elephant and Monza was staying put, so we felt comfortable that the elephant was either down or unable to go. Element told me that with his experience, if the elephant was still in fighting shape, he would pay quite a bit of attention at the dog at this feet and allow us time to get in to dispatch him. Fortunately, the fellow was already dead, but I placed an insurance shot for good measure. Monza had already claimed victory, though. She was holding onto the trunk and trying to pull her prize away from the group!
