2007 Tanzania Trophy Fees

The long-awaited schedule of 2007 trophy fees for Tanzania is now available. You'll recall that the Tanzanian hunting industry recently struck a compromise with the Tanzanian Government over the huge trophy and concession fee increases announced after the 2007 season had already begun. We previously reported that the 2007 fees would be going up about 15 percent across the board.

At a meeting of the Tanzanian Professional Hunters Association held at the SCI Convention in late January 2008, the new Tanzanian Director of Wildlife granted the petitions of safari operators and announced that his department would begin issuing invoices immediately for 2007 safaris. That means operators will be able to start shipping trophies to clients in February 2008 before their clients’ CITES permits expire and the rainy season complicates trophy storage.

Most if not all fees are likely to be passed on to clients. Although we had heard some of the larger operators would be able to absorb the fees, all of the safari companies that have contacted us say they simply are unable to do that and remain viable operations. Importantly, 2007 trophies cannot be shipped until Tanzanian safari operators receive and pay government invoices for them.
