Outfitter Critique: A Rave Review for Maine Trophy Moose Hunting
Subscriber Denny Shellabarger has wonderful things to say about a Maine moose hunt he enjoyed this past September with Guy Randlett of Maine Trophy Moose. He killed a 54½-inch bull and says he saw lots of moose. He describes his experience this way: "Hunting with a professional guide is a real psychological comfort. I have hunted big game for 50-plus years with many guides in many states. Guy Randlett is at the top of my list because he is truly a professional.
"After our pre-hunt discussion, I was confident we would encounter multiple bulls and have an opportunity at a giant. And we did. Guy analyzes the weather (wind, moisture, clouds and temperature), habitat features and findings from his pre-season scouting and then puts you where the bulls are. We observed eight bulls the first day, seven bulls the second day and shot a great bull at first light the third morning!
"Guy's calling ability is exceptional. He knows all of the nuances of pitch, volume and other sounds necessary to entice a bull into easy rifle range. He completely understands moose habits and has in-depth knowledge of their habitat - a deadly combination. Guy is amenable and will work hard to position you for a kill shot. Just listen to him and be successful. We saw a 60-plus-incher but couldn't get a shot at him!
"Guy's assistant guides are also highly professional. You can count on them to react appropriately in any situation. Whether it be calling or 'reading' other moose signs/sounds, they are great and add significantly to the success of the hunt. The equipment used by the guides is first class, and you can count on them to get your trophy out of the woods in a timely and safe manner. Guy has communications with outside help if need be. This is important considering the remoteness of the hunting area.
"Highlights of the hunt included walking up on a bull and cow on the way out of the woods and walking like a moose as we stalked my trophy. Taking a trophy with my son was the memory-of-a-lifetime! Other highlights included seeing other game, such as grouse and bear.
"The terrain there is gorgeous in September. Accommodations were great. Food was great -- that steak dinner the first night! And the facilities were very sanitary. Showers worked great, and hot water was plentiful. The camp staff was friendly and helpful.
"What Guy states in his web site is accurate. He isn't fudging his experience or knowledge. He puts you on the bulls!!"
