Mark Hampton’s Ugandan sitatunga is the new SCI Number One in the Handgun Category.Get your feet wet in Uganda, White Nile style.
Getting that elusive sitatunga means a trip to the swamps, and Uganda has some vast wetlands ideal for the dedicated sitatunga hunter. Back in September 2012, we reported that safari operator Christian Weth of Uganda Wildlife Safaris had begun offering targeted sitatunga hunting in a new, untapped area (see Article 2935
). Well, we've received some great reports from his hunts in 2013: Dick Fruchey (9119)
says that Weth has found a true sitatunga paradise. “Probably the best concentration of these animals in Africa. Uganda Wildlife Safaris are predicting 100 percent success rates, and are rewriting the record book!” His trophy came in at 64 5/8-inches. Other recommendations? “Have the outfitter buy you some knee-high rubber boots in Uganda. You will need them.” Danny Danell (9242)
found his big trophy sitatunga in these swamps: “My sitatunga should be in the top ten SCI. This is a great hunting experience with record-book sitatunga and an extremely organized outfitter.”
On his safari with Weth, Mark Hampton (9066)
took 11 species, including a new SCI Number One in the Handgun Category. “East African sitatunga and Nile buffalo were quite the bonus on this hunt. Unique trophies, and good healthy animals.”Xavier Benoit du Rey (9156)
says, “I have hunted sitatunga before with no success, and it's a difficult species to harvest, but here it was easy.” He hunted Uganda Wildlife Safari’s Kafue River Basin area through Grand Safari, taking a 26 5/8-inch animal. “It was unreal to see so many sitatunga and to have the luxury to choose which one I wanted to take.”
Uganda Wildlife Safaris is not the only game in town, however. Take a look at Edward Yates'
on the hunting at Lake Albert Lodge with PH Bruce Martin. This was a big hunt for Yates, who took a Ssese Island sitatunga, as well as kob, Nile buffalo, Nile bushbuck and more. “I now have all four sitatunga, all eight bushbuck, and all five African buffalo. This is a great outfitter with opportunities for unique animals.”
NORTH AMERICA ROUNDUP
Martin Berndt took his aoudad trophy on the Crown X Ranch in Texas.
Real sheep hunting anyone can afford. Barbary sheep, or aoudad sheep, have roamed free in parts of the Southwest since the 1960s, and they make for quite a hunt, according to numerous Hunting Report subscribers. In a May 2013 report correspondent Mike Bodenchuck (Article 3093
) mentioned some opportunities to hunt for these critters in New Mexico, but opportunities abound in Texas as well. Dan Caughey (9069)
booked a hunt for aoudad sheep with Mike McKinny of West Texas Hunt Organization after reading about the opportunity in The Hunting Report. “This is a great value. Both my hunting partner and I shot great old rams in a wonderful setting. Food was great with plenty of it. Why go elsewhere? Perfect for spot-and-stalk hunters.”Martin Berndt
of Germany (9135)
said of his Texas hunt, “After more than 60 hunts worldwide it’s hard to get something new, but you never know until you try!” He hunted aoudad and markhor with Jim and Melony Roche of Magnum Guide Service. “We worked very hard, climbed mountains up and down, spotted and spotted, and Jim finally got me a shot at a fine old markhor ram. Already satisfied! With still enough time left, we tried for aoudad, and I got another beautiful trophy, a big old aoudad ram. Highly recommended.” Jay Wolfenden (9027)
took a big SCI gold medal sheep with Rowdy McBride of Rowdy McBride Hunting Services in Alpine, Texas. Robert and Arlene Hanson (9207)
had what could easily be called a hunting safari in Texas, taking aoudad sheep as well as addax, yak, oryx, nilgai, gazelle, and more on 777 Ranch with guide Steve Rann. “Huge variety of game, outstanding hunts and meals.” If you want an “exotic” sheep hunt without traveling overseas, Texas might be the ticket. And for more wild sheep, we give you . . .
INTERNATIONAL MOUFLON ROUNDUP
Free-range mouflon are available from Europe to South America to the Hawaiian Islands. Peter Hunt took this one in Austria.Add-on a mouflon.
We have a lot of good reports on mouflon taken during ibex hunts in Spain, but the mouflon makes a great add-on species in the Alps and elsewhere. In Austria, Mal Stanislaus (9098)
says he had “five star accommodation, food, and guides” on his red deer hunt with Hunt Austria. “My guide spotted three mouflon rams on our way back from taking my red stag, and we put together a plan to go back later for a spot-and-stalk. Took a trophy mouflon that evening.” Also in Austria, Peter Hunt (9112)
took mouflon, ibex, chamois and wild boar with guide Bert Eder. “Austria is a beautiful country with great hunting,” he says. “Very happy with all my trophies. I really enjoyed spot-and-stalk hunting in the mountains.”Tony MacLeod (9117)
visited the Dinaric Alps of Croatia with Artemis Hunting and guide Tomo Svetic to hunt for bear. “Unfortunately, the snow helped the bears this time,” writes McLeod. He had to content himself with a SCI bronze medal mouflon when the bears failed to show. “Excellent outfitter and guides. All worked extremely hard to make the hunt a success, and I am already thinking about when I can go again.”
In Argentina's Pampas, Laird Hamblin (9092)
took an SCI gold medal mouflon, plus water buffalo, axis deer, collared peccary, red deer, mountain lion and more. “Got an SCI Diamond by taking 11 species in one hunt, puma and water buffalo hunts were amazing. Great outfitter, guides and lodge.”Tom Harrison (9247)
hunted mouflon in Hawaii with guide Pat Fisher of Hawaii Safaris. “Free-ranging axis deer and mouflon while staying at a gorgeous Four Seasons Resort,” he says. This would be a nice add-on to a relaxing vacation at the beach!
