Kayleigh Wright and her beautiful gemsbok in Namibia.
Just Plains Fun. With its striking black-and-white markings the gemsbok is one of the most beautiful faces you're likely to see on the plains of Africa, although you wouldn't want to get on the business end of its horns! With male and female alike making a beautiful trophy, gemsbok is always a welcome addition to a dangerous game or plains game hunt.
In Namibia, Mike Daley (9266) took a big 40-inch gemsbok on his hunt with PH Jerome Philippe of Ozondjahe Safaris. “This is the best ranch I have hunted in Africa as far as the number of animals and the trophy size. Lots of big record book trophies to choose from in plains game and exceptional lodge and food.” Kayleigh Wright (9353) hunted Namibia with Dirk de Bod of Dirk de Bod Safaris. “Ten days of intense up-before-dawn hunting.” She took a 37-inch gemsbok, a 54-inch kudu, and many other animals despite severe drought conditions.
South Africa is plains game central, and Larry Horseman (9329) said gemsbok, impala and wildebeest were the highlights of his South African bowhunt with East Cape Safaris' PH Grant Abrahamson. “I will heartily recommend this hunt to my friends. Abundance of animals of most species and a true African adventure. East Cape Safaris went overboard to ensure this was a good hunt.” Matt Konkle (9265) had a blast at Lew Harris Safaris in the Northwest Province. “From the moment I arrived the whole hunt was a high point. Took a great impala, a beautiful zebra and a very good gemsbok. My wife was along, and we woke every morning to lions roaring at sunrise.”
Botswana may not be the elephant hunting mecca for the moment, but Ryan Grissom (9548) had an excellent plains game hunt there with Kanana Safaris, PH Jason Bridger. He found big gemsbok, as well as hundreds of eland and quality kudu. “The most relaxing hunt I have ever been on,” says Grissom. “It's just plain fun.”
NORTH AMERICA ROUNDUP
Robert Cassell with his 180-class mule deer.
Mulies Don't Come Easy. A world-class mule deer is now one of the hardest trophies in North America to acquire. Between drought and draw disappoints, it can take nothing short of a miracle—or an outfitter with guaranteed tags—to get a real monster.
The 200-inch-plus dream came true for subscriber Mike Daley (9388), who took a 203 7/8 buck with J&J Outfitters in Utah. “Enjoying an area loaded with game and getting onto a B&C typical buck. What a special hunt to share with my brother! My guide, Josh Smith, was well-prepared, and you could tell he wasn't just doing it for work.” Also with J&J, Robert Cassell (9573) got onto a 186-inch buck, giving due credit to the outfitter's game management. “This hunt is well-managed for trophy quality. Experienced guides with good equipment.”
In South Dakota, Victor Roth (9558) says that Willie Dvorak of Jim River Guide Services got him an “awesome” buck. “Willie always had a plan. We might move to a different area or change methods, following the game patterns. Great stalks. There's never a dull moment on this hunt.” Lane Kinney (9609) got a 170-class trophy in Idaho with West Elk Outfitters. “You had to look for them, but the trophy deer were there. I took my personal best mule deer. Beautiful country and fun outfitter.”
Mule deer hunting is serious business, but it's supposed to be fun, too. James Kenney (9463) says of Tyson Mackin at Mackin Outfitters in Alberta, “Mackin gets it. He knows that although it is a hunting trip, hunting is vacation and leisure for the client. This is very important. I took a heavy 4x4 that scored around 180, despite heavy snow and unusual cold. Quality experience.”

Peter Hunt took this Austrian mouflon with Klemens Bugelnig.
Alpine Mountain High. Austria has a long hunting tradition, but you don't have to wear an alpine hat and a loden cape to get the experience. That said, Ben Wilson (8989) reports that he went the full nine yards on his trip with Hunt Austria. “I had the whole European hunting experience complete with customary hunting clothing. This was the hunt-of-a-lifetime for me, with great wild red deer.”
Mal Stanislaus (9098) had a wonderful stay with Hunt Austria, too. “I highly recommend the team of Eva Schnopfhagen and PH Martin from Hunt Austria for anyone who enjoys history/scenery and hunting tradition. Ranks as one of the best hunts in my 35 years of hunting.” Paul Beyer (9597) also booked with Eva Schnopfhagen and Hunt Austria, getting red deer, mouflon and chamois. “Austria is a fantastic country,” he says. “Great scenery and environment, from woods to meadows to alpine terrain. Great first hunt overseas for me, with helpful guides and beautiful lodging.”
Robert Duhadaway (9337) hunted Austria with Martin Neuper of FN Hunting. “Challenging hunt with old castles, beautiful countryside, and great alpine chamois.” Kurt Fetzer (8925) says his hunt with Klemens Bugelnig went off without a hitch. “Outstanding in all aspects.” Fetzer took ibex, roe deer and wild boar. “Very well-managed area. Klemens is a fine gentleman, and the country is beautiful.” Peter Hunt (9112) seconds this report. “Bugelnig runs a very good hunting operation, and his operation doesn't charge daily rates. I was very happy with all of my trophies — well-managed, abundant game.”
