NORTH AMERICA ROUNDUP
J. Kevin Ciavarra and his DIY Texas scimitar-horned oryx.
Exotic Texas. We've covered Texas hunts for Barbary sheep in the Roundup, but the Southwest is also home to a host of other exotic species, oryx in particular. You won't find many scimitar-horned oryx in their native range of North Africa, where they are extinct in the wild, but healthy populations roam Texas and New Mexico. J. Kevin Ciavarra (9175) took a self-guided draw hunt in Texas, bagging a 37-inch scimitar. “Land well-maintained with an excellent herd, and very good game managers. The hunting is done by compartment (area segments), so expect to hunt the entire time unless you draw a choice compartment.”
Robert and Arlene Hanson (9207) enjoyed what might be the ultimate Texas exotics safari with Steve Rann and Tommy Sowell of 777 Ranch. “Great variety of game, including scimitar-horned oryx and Arabian oryx, as well as blackbuck, addax, nilgai and more.” Russell Dean Smith (8704) visited New Mexico with Tierra Encantada Outfitters. “This is a great opportunity to hunt Ted Turner's private Armendaris Ranch, which is a unique property. As a guest here, everything was just exceptional.”
John Kriewaldt (9471) didn't take his usual bull nilgai while hunting with Wildlife Systems, Inc., opting for gemsbok, whitetail, and wild hog with guide Ruben Fernandez. “Nilgai are susceptible to freezing temperatures, and were affected by a recent cold snap. I hunted for gemsbok on the Yturria Ranch, and got a clean shot on a great bull despite more foliage than usual. Great hunt. Yes, this is south Texas, but you don't sit in a permanent blind over a corn pile.”
“Tough animals to get in range,” says Phil Scott (8669) of the oryx he hunted near the White Sands Missile Range with New Mexico and Arizona Extreme Hunting Adventures. “We kept moving from sunrise to sundown. Guide Matt Gilstrap is one the best trackers I have ever seen. Highly recommended.”

Apollo's Africa. A lot of hunters seem to leave the bow behind when heading over to Africa. That said, we have a handful of reports on bowhunting in South Africa to share. Lisa Carter (9568) did a full-blown safari with bow in hand in Limpopo with Limcroma Safaris, taking kudu, blue wildebeest, zebra and more. “This will be the best hunting experience of your life. Hannes Els, the owner, and the entire staff go above and beyond. Els runs a strict management program for great genetics. And of course, each and every trophy taken with a bow is a highlight.” Father-and-son team Kobus and Andrew Erasmus were Carter’s PHs. “They are a true pleasure to hunt with, and their combined experience yields great results.”
“Great African bowhunt,” says Kent Griffith (9362) of his trip to Limpopo with Bullet Safaris and PH Nathan Askew. “Low pressure area with lots of plains game. PH Nathan is an American who specializes in dangerous game, but made excellent arrangements for our bowhunt.” Griffith harvested nyala, wildebeest, gemsbok, impala and warthog.
Tracy Samuelson (9663) hunted Zululand and KwaZulu-Natal with Chumlet Safaris, getting nyala, grey duiker, kudu, black wildebeest. “Harvested all animals with bow, and my wife took her zebra with a bow. PH Tyrone Milne adapted well to guiding in a bowhunting situation, and he is skilled on trophy selection. This was a great adventure for us, and Chumlet made wonderful arrangements.”
The odd man out is Heber Simmons Jr. (9287), who hunted Limpopo with a crossbow. PH Sakkie Marais of Choronga Safaris put him within 50 yards of black wildebeest, bushbuck, civet, and a big 124 4/8 SCI kudu. “Got the trophies I wanted plus civet, and enjoyed figuring out a plan to take bushbuck with the crossbow. Third trip with Choronga, and looking forward to trip number four!”

Revisiting Spain, Part One.We have many great reports coming in from Spain all the time, and our database is a trove of information for hunters looking for the right outfitter for ibex, red deer, and more. Spain is a choice destination for hassle-free hunting in Europe. Here's a few of the highlights from our database, with more to follow in the next installment.
Hunting Report readers recently heard about Trophy Hunting Spain's Bruno Rosich guiding subscriber John Hoestenbach onto a world record Beceite ibex. Rosich also took the lead when Lon Bothwell (9201) hunted northern Spain. “I took two great old trophies, a 13-year-old ibex, and an 11-year-old mouflon. Great hunt location and a great guide.” Sean McNeils (9525) says that with all of the gold medal billies around, he had a hard time getting just a “representative” Beceite with Trophy Hunting Spain guide Oscar Colominag. “The lead males were well into the gold classification.” McNeils also enjoyed a local boar hunt, and watching two huge ibex fight atop a cliff while he and his guide sat eating raw honey off of a clay roof tile. Only in Spain! “Food, people, and places could not have been more alluring.” Don't miss reading this detailed report.
Another popular Spanish operator with our readers is Ibex Hunt Spain, which offers a lot of options across the country, including a “Spanish Grand Slam” hunt for nine species. Some of our subscribers are particularly loyal to guide Valeriano Belles Tena. “I think Belles Tena is one of the best Spanish guides. I recommend him to everybody,” says Johannes Stefansson (9518). “This is my seventh trip with him, and I took a great 248 CIC Gredos.” Blaise Rey (9044 and 9043) went for Balearean boc and Gredos ibex with Belles Tena. “Idyllic setting on a magnificent property for the boc, and great approach for ibex. Great trophy class animals thanks to the remarkable work done by Valeriano.” Carl Tatarin (9613) took a Ronda and a Gredos with Belles Tena. “All arrangements were meticulous. Excellent spot and stalk culminating in gold medal ibex. Top shelf outfitter.
