NORTH AMERICAN ROUNDUP

Nothing helps beat the heat like the image of chasing wild cats in winter! And here's a few hunt reports to you cool off. In Idaho's Selkirk Range Dwight Van Brunt
) took a 175-pound a cougar with a handgun hunting behind hounds with guide Bruce Duncan. His hunting partner took a "monster" 32-pound bobcat on the same hunt. "Flawless in every respect… has hunted the area for 40 years." Lane Kinney

) took a mountain lion on a horseback hunt with guide Hap Blacksten. "Even if there is no snow for tracking, Hap and his dogs can find a lion." He hunted the Wagon Mound Area of Cimarron in New Mexico.
(Mike Benben, right, and his 10-foot brown bear.)
Alaska - Brown Bears Galore! Mike Benben
) says his group of five hunters saw 34 brown bears in one evening! They hunted Southeast Alaska with Jimmy Rosenbruch of Glacier Guides. Benben took a magnificent boar he says went 10 feet and had a skull measuring 26 4/16 B&C. Pat Laughlin
) says his coastal brown bear
squared 10 feet too. He hunted the Alaska Peninsula with Dave Leonard's Mountain Monarchs, guides Riley Hicks and Martin Balukas. He saw half a dozen bears a day, all with "luxurious perfect coats." Over on Kodiak Island, Mario Nobili
) took his "trophy-of-a-lifetime" despite a late spring with plenty of snow on the ground. He hunted with Mike Munsey of Munsey's Bear Camp and says, "My guide never stopped, always with his Zeiss on his eyes." And Lloyd Smrkovski
) shot a brown bear
on Chichagof Island with Chris Erickson of Tok River Outfitters. "Outstanding hunt. Outstanding guide."
(Mark Wehinger and his 40-inch Cape buffalo.)
Zimbabwe - Where the Bulls Are

). He got a 40-incher while hunting the Zambezi Escarpment and Rifa with PH Frik Muller of Pro Safaris Africa. "Frik recommended we pass on a 37-inch buffalo, knowing that we'd see better." Mark Wehinger
) also took a 40-inch buffalo in the Save Conservancy with PH Pete Wood, guiding for Roger Whittall Safaris. The highlight: a full buffalo charge on follow-up! Glenn Baker
bagged a 40-inch bull
in the Buybye Valley Conservancy with PH Kevin Thomas of KT Safaris. "One of the finest areas remaining in Africa," he says. "Superb management… run like a fine Swiss watch." Eight buffalo were taken during his time in camp, his the smallest. The largest went 45 inches!
In Chewore South, Bill Goddard

) laments losing his buffalo, but took a mature sable and kudu on his hunt in Dande and Dande East with PH Myles McCallum, guiding for Charlton McMallum Safaris. "Good quality, but not great plains game numbers; typical dangerous game area."
NAMIBIA: FROM DAYTIME LEOPARDS TO FIRST-TIME PLAINS GAME Mark Seiden
) completed his "big five" in Namibia hunting with Dirk de Bod, of Dirk de Bod Safaris. A leopard had eluded Seiden on previous hunts, and he took this specimen in broad daylight. "The cat was standing atop a koppie 191 yards away and I killed it with one shot." He describes de Bod as "a gentleman and a sportsman, in addition to being a consummate PH." Leroy Wurst
) had a parallel leopard hunting experience with Jan Oelofse Hunting Safaris. He also took a leopard in broad daylight. "My original plan was to take a handful of plains game and concentrate on hunting leopards. Upon harvesting my cat early I was left with ample extra time and took 19 species of plains game. This area is loaded with game!" Species included sable, eland, kudu, and oryx.
) says Nick Nolte Hunting Safaris provided the perfect family safari for plains game. A first-timer to African hunting, he says he and his two sons collected 20 trophies, including kudu, springbok, impala, hartebeest, zebra and oryx, several of gold medal quality. His non-hunting wife enjoyed seeing "dozens of species of animals and birds and the beautiful southwest African landscape." If you haven't hunted Africa and are thinking about it, this is a good report to check out. Neil Molendyk
) took all medal quality trophies with Klawerberg-Namibia. He hunted typical Namibian game: kudu, gemsbok (oryx), red hartebeest, warthog and others. While one of the rabies outbreaks common in Namibia had killed off many kudu, he says populations were sufficient to support hunting. "Exceptional hospitality and ethical professionalism," he says. And Kurt Mannchen
) says a herd of more than 100 gemsbok thundered by him within 50 yards while hunting with Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris in the Panorama Game Reserve. He also hunted eland, kudu and springbok. "Saw a total of 29 species… If you enjoy walking in semi desert and seeing large numbers of species while hunting, go with Jamy."
