Night hunting for problem elephants is too much for me. First couple of nights, hunted till 2am, went to bed, got up at 4:30am and went back out trying to catch them leaving the fields (maize patches around the villages) and the last two nights stayed out there all night long. Very little sleep in the day, as we were doing recon on the best places to go for the next evening. We saw elephant during the day as the area was abundant with them and of course overpopulated. Hwange National Park has a carrying capacity of 8,000-10,000 elephants and now has over 30,000, so the habitat is being devastated and the other animals are paying the price. Rains ended early this year, so the corn crop was terrible and starting to dry up when we got there. The natives were trying to save what they had. Crop raiding elephants like the green corn and  not so much the dry corn, so the heavy activity was over. In addition, false reports were coming in from the natives who wanted you at their fields just in case the elephants were coming in. We were hunting in a 100KM long area next to the park and doing a lot of driving. We stalked within 35 yards to bulls twice but the wind changed or noise was made and away they went. PH wanted us at 25 yards before he cut the light on and they bolted...had to be a quick accurate first shot, then pour lead at him running away. There was no moon the whole time, so walking through the bush, ravines, and fields in the black dark is unnerving, you just had to follow the head bobbing on the tracker in front of you as you could barely make out the ground. In some areas we would walk 2-3 hours through continuous little village fields. I took a tumble once and got scratched up a little. At least it got cool enough at night the snakes were dormant. We killed a black mamba with 100 yards of camp the afternoon of the second day and saw quite a few trails where other snakes had crossed the trails and roads. In one little valley a lion had just killed an impala an hour before we walked into it. ~Harold

Problems of Hunt: None really, tough hunting, new area which has not been hunted for the last 15 years. Close by a mining concession, which can be annoying, some poaching but not an issue. An amazing hunt. Not huge amount of game but they just restarted hunting there and only one water well was active on the concession. Be on the look-out for this one for the years to come as roads are reopened and wells functioning. It will bring the game out of the Hwange Park... The PHs, Wayne Jardine and Dave Aymot (cat specialist, believe me), were outstanding. They went through incredible effort to have my dad complete his dream, ie shoot a buffalo in fair chase. He achieved not only this,but shot what could be the number 1 buffalo in Zimbabwe this year. Excellent trackers who never give up, we recovered a wounded waterbuck after two days of tracking... Very old, mature animals. Tons of elephant (sometimes more than 100 spotted per day). I shot mine in self-defense, could have asked for a new tag but decided against it. Big tuskers are there so 55+ are a real possibility. Lots of leopard, I was not picky due to time but some huge cats there, and quick on baits due to low hunting pressure. We spent the last days at Sondelani Game Preserve to spend time with my family. My son was even able to shot a buffalo there (very, very difficult to approach them but when luck is on your side...). In a nutshell, I strongly recommend this outfit. Wayne has a strong character but will give you a hunt of a lifetime if you are up to the challenge.

Safari company/outfitter/booking agent: Unsuccessful leopard hunt with hounds. The worst hunt I have ever experienced, by far. Requested some hides be set up for plains game. No pre-hunt prep done on any of this. They were aware that this was supposed to be a bow hunt, and had a list of the animals that I was interested in. There was no pre-hunt prep done for the leopard, no hides were set up, and there was no plan to hunt any of the listed animals. When I arrived in Bulawayo, they dumped me in a truck with the PH (who had just arrived from a hunt on the other side of the country with another safari company) and sent us several hours west, where we spent the rest of the hunt. Upon arriving in camp, it was a disaster  both the PH and I smelled alcohol on the staff (they were drunk), and they had fired the camp manager a few weeks earlier (he had not yet been replaced). The camp was a disgrace. The status and the condition of the camp were appalling. The main lodge had burned down in the off season, and they had not begun to rebuild it (although they were cooking our meals out of what was left of the kitchen appliances within the charred timbers of the burned out lodge), the food was the worst I have ever had anywhere (they ran out of butter, jam and sugar during my stay  got very sick for 2 ½ days from something I ate as well). The game fence in one area of the property had rotted and fallen down, allowing in an entire herd of eland to escape. The waterhole had run dry and the staff was negligent in refilling them  also, no salt or mineral blocks  we found many dead/dying animals on the property. We stopped by the skinning shed and found rotting hides from previous clients safaris. Lastly, there were hundreds of Rock Hyrax that had taken over the camp, and I had to play hopscotch to avoid walking on their droppings, which were never cleaned from the sidewalk. The hunt was with ZimAfrica Wildlife Safaris. On the concession where we hunted the leopard, the roads had not been cleared, and there were no anti-poaching. Caring and concern for client welfare and staging a hunt for success are not their strong suit. I would not recommend anyone hunting with them. Overall, I got the sense that years ago this was once a wonderful safari destination that was now dying of neglect. It was clear that the outfitter and booking agent had wreckless disregard for fulfilling any part of the hunting agreement. Professional hunter: One of the most professional that I have dealt with in all of my hunting. If it were not for him, I would not have harvested any animals, and probably would have come home early. To begin with, he is a bow hunter and probably the most experienced/successful leopard hunting PH on the planet (Tristan Peacock). I had him specifically written into my hunt contract. When my bows did not show up he arranged for me to use his 80 pound Mathews Apex bow and borrowed a Leupold Rangefinder from a friend of his (and had his 7 month pregnant wife deliver to camp). He was a great guy to hunt with. We hunted hard for the entire time, and he appeared to do everything in his power to get me a leopard. However, the lack of any pre-hunt preparation, anti-poaching, road clearing, proved to be too much to overcome. There just was not any game in the area and no reason for leopard to hand around. During the second half of the hunt the poachers began stealing our baits. My PH was very upset with being thrust into this horrible situation and I felt through the entire hunt that he was fed up with this outfitter putting him in situations like this. This was his last leopard hunt and he is now retired and working as a Taxidermist in South Africa. I was told during the hunt that their best leopard hunting area, where they used to take some really good cats had been expropriated and was no longer available. The final insult  my PH, now turned Taxidermist in RSA just notified me that my trophies just arrived in RSA, and the klipspringer in the crate was not the one that I shot. This was an overall terrible experience  having been on a number of fantastic previous safaris, I know the difference. Rebuttal from Zim Africa: Below is an email from the outfitter Ken hunted with. Ken was a bow hunters and wanted to us dogs for his Leopard. I only know very little as ken never called me after his hunt. I taught it would be best for get the story from Rebecca. If there is anything else you need please let me know and thank you. I have been booking for ZimAfrica for 19 years and only have a few clients that was unhappy. Regards, Jeff Hi jeff, Ken hunted in 2008 with us with Tristan Peacock(and hounds) as the professional hunter. He never got his leopard which was surprising at the time as there had been more than one cat on bait at the time! Tristan kept saying that it was only females and young males. When the client left Wayne spoke to the trackers and scouts and they all said that Tristan had deliberately said this to get the client to rebook directly with him the following year to hunt leopard with hounds. We then confronted Tristan and he denied this and since then he has never done another hunt for us! However Ken must have come back to hunt the following year with Tristan on whatever area and plan he himself had arranged There has never been any negative correspondence between ourselves and Ken? Yes he had an unsuccessful leopard hunt with Zimafrica BUT never said anything when he left and saw tracks on his hunt and chose not to hunt based on what the ph had advised and left on an amicable basis. Tristan and ourselves have never spoken since, ken had told one of the staff that he was coming to hunt with Tristan the following year. He must be talking about his hunt in 2009? If it was about us in 2008 why has he said nothing until now? I am confused. Rebecca From The Hunting Report to Jeff Martinell: I have asked Ken whether he rebooked this hunt with Tristan or not. That said, there are things in his report about the camp that Rebecca did not address. Had they fired the camp manager and not replaced him yet when Ken arrived? Had there been a fire in the lodge? Had the game fence rotted and fallen down allowing the eland herd to escape? What about the dry waterholes, lack of salt blocks, dead animals around the property? Or the rock hyrax that took residence over the camp. There are many things here that Rebecca did not address at all. This is all besides the issues with the leopard hunt. Is Rebecca saying the hunt Ken describes in the report did not take place on their concession? Help me understand whats going on here Jeff. And, if these things did take place on their concession  what happened and has it been fixed since? I know it has been 2 years, hopefully any problems on this farm have been addressed. Response from Jeff Martinell to The Hunting Report: We had over 30 hunters this year and everyone had a great time and took very good animals. Tristan put words in Kens head and he has just been bad mouthing us ever since. I will copy this email to Rebecca and she may want to answer some of your questions. As far as I am concerned Rebecca has run a very good camp, took care of my clients 100 percent and has had no problems. I am sure that Ken has not told you that Tristan was let go from the Safari operation. Jeff. Thanks for the opportunity to respond to Rebeccas claims. My report is about the 2008 hunt with Zimafrica. I realize that Rebecca is trying to protect her livelihood. However, her response is filled with he said/she said, and really doesnt address the horrible conditions and lack of hunt preparation which led to this disastrous hunt and deplorable living conditions. Filing a negative hunting report is not something that I enjoy doing, but I really owe it to my fellow hunters to help them avoid such a terrible and reckless experience. All of my other safaris have been wonderful - great folks, and the hunting usually exceeded my expectations. Not so with ZimAfrica. Ill address a few of Rebeccas claims: That I never said anything when I Left  During the hunt, Tristan texted Rebecca almost daily on the poor conditions of the camp and the lack of game (there was no phone or cell service at the camp). On the day of my departure, I went to Zimafricas Office. When we were about 100 yards from the office, Rebecca pulled out and drove away. I spoke with Wayne Jardine and let him know that I was unhappy with the camp and hunt preparations. I did not have to pay the Leopard trophy fee, which was a lot of money. Both Wayne, and (when I returned home) Jeff Martinell both were very specific in their questions as to whether I had a shot opportunity on a Leopard. The answer is no. According to my PH and trackers, we only found fresh tracks of females. We found one set of massive Leopard tracks during my hunt, but they were several days old and not huntable. I stand by my earlier comments  the lack of pre-hunt prep had us clearing roads, dealing with shortcomings in camp, etc which all took away from hunting time. Also, the lack of game and obvious poaching impacted the hunt, as there was little game to keep Leopards in the area. Zimafrica was aloof about my hunting success or personal welfare, they simply dumped me on the PH and took the money. I did not have to correspond with Zimafrica about my hunt as it was done face-to-face prior to my departure. That I returned in 2009 to hunt with Tristan  Never happened. On almost every hunt I have ever been on there are discussions of future hunts. Toward the end of the hunt Tristan and I briefly discussed the possibility of my coming back to hunt with him on a 14-day dangerous game hunt for Elephant, Buffalo, and Leopard (if I still needed it). However, after this hunt, Zim would definitely not be my first choice. That I never spoke with the Booking Agent after the Hunt  Jeff called me a few days after my hunt. He began by talking about how poor South African Airlines service had become, and then we began to discuss the hunt. It was a short conversation, as Jeff attempted to repudiate every shortcoming that I mentioned. His theme was that he had sent numerous clients to ZimAfrica over the years and most had exceptional hunts. I let him know that the camp and hunting conditions had deteriorated and was very poor. Jeff did offer to do what he could on a future hunt with ZimAfrica. But, I told him that I really wasnt interested, as it was the worst hunting experience that I ever had. My parting thought to Jeff was the time to make sure things are right is before a hunt begins. Safari Company vs. PH  Tristan had hunted for ZimAfrica for many years and was a very good friend of Rebeccas late husband Sean Stein. However, Tristan was very upset at being thrust into this hunt that obviously lacked any preparation by the Safari Company. Did Tristan intentionally mislead me about the Leopard tracks as Rebecca suggests? I have no way of knowing for certain, but he certainly struck me as a man of more personal character than that. I do know that he was the only person that I met in Zimbabwe who at all cared for my personal welfare. Since the hunt, I ran into Tristan at the SCI show in Reno, NV. He said that ZimAfrica was refusing to pay him for the hunt (I suspect the lack of the Leopard Trophy Fee is behind Rebeccas claims). Tristan has since retired from hunting and moved to RSA, where he runs the family taxidermy business.

Problems of Hunt: Picked up at airport in Bulawayo in two Toyota two seater (and cruisers for all five of us plus the two drivers and two of their trackers. It was pretty uncomfortable for a two plus hour drive. At end of hunt we were overcharged for trophy fees but it was refunded ot us in a timely courteous apologetic manner by Zim Africa. Highlights of Hunt: When my dad got his kudu, warthog and baboon all on the last morning of the hunt. Equipment Recommendations: Quiet, comfortable hiking boots and clothing. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? Beautiful country, friendly helpful staff, plentiful game. A once in a lifetime experience.

Did some touring in Capetown for three days. It is beautiful there in September. The hunt was fabulous. Sondolani is a spectacular place. Well staffed with very polite and helpful people. The food was very good. We tried a lot of wild game and it was all phenominal. The PH's were very knowledgeable and the trackers were unbelievable, tracking zebra and stalking them until we caught up with them to get a shot. The skinning crew were also amazing. They all did a great job on all of our capes and skins. We did some more touring for 3 1/2 days after the hunt. Stayed at another out camp for a night called Malindi. It was nice, went to Hwange National Park for a couple of hours. We got there a bit late so we didn't see too many animals. Went to Victoria Falls after that. It is incredible. Really too much to describe, went rafting on the Zambezi River. Its awesome. If you plan on taking that long uncomfortable flight to Africa, you might as well do as much as you possibly can while you're there. Do some touring. It's unforgettable.

Would not shoot eland before the leopard. Got leopard day eight of ten. Game Condition Comments: Outstanding numbers of nice trophy animals. Leopards hit bait nearly everyday. Waited for big tom.
