SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: My buffalo was a bit soft in bosses. My PH was trying hard to get me the type of curl I wanted.
Highlights of Hunt: Great waterbuck 31" + warthog + great people to hunt with. Wind shifted, herd of about 150 buffalo spooked and surrounded us because wins was swirling. Had buffalo on 3 sides, 6-10 yards away - most exciting - PH and tracker were cool as cucumbers! Great folks if things get dicey.
Equipment Recommendations: Knee pads - did not take them last year - worth their weight in gold.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? My second hunt with them - awesome outfit. Vast area, lots of game, great staff, great PH and excellent booking agent.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I had a truly amazing ten day hunt in the Zambezi Delta Region of Mozambique in late July and early August.   I am pleased to report that my booking agent, the hunting operation, PH, trackers and camp staff far exceeded my expectations.

When I booked the hunt about a year prior, I had no idea that I would only have two days off counting holidays and weekends for the seven months prior to the hunt.  Gordie White from Worldwide Hunting Adventures always replied immediately when I was in need of information or advice.  On the rare days that I was actually home for a day or two, he was always there to help me get the seemingly endless details for this type of hunt taken care of.  He, like the PH and his staff I hunted with, is an utterly competent and reliable person.  I will definitely be booking other hunts with Gordie.

Though I have written two dozen books, I cannot find the words to do justice in describing my superb PH Poen Van Zyl, his amazing tracker Gothcie and his assistant tracker Albino.  These masters of the bush proved you can track a specific buffalo after an intense rainstorm and then find him again two days later.  All this was required after the buffalo was hit with a grazing shot when the bullet was deflected by an unseen tree branch while stalking the animal in the forest.

We were also taken with the young apprentice PH Ettiene and the delightful camp hostess Zaendre.  Our beloved cook Sarah astonished us with her ability to prepare a truly astonishing array of delights while in such a remote region.  While I understand the food is not to this level at their spike camp in the swamp, our food was superb.  The seemingly endless array of camp staff who washed and pressed our clothes, brought us hot tea early each morning, skinned the game and even swept the dirt pathways while constantly checking on our every whim were far more than the likes of my brother and I deserve or expected.

I have only been fortunate enough to have booked four previous hunts with other guides and professional hunters.  I am therefore certainly no Craig Boddington when it comes to evaluating hunting operations.  This disclaimer in mind, I must say that I am in full agreement with the legendary hunters assessment of Mark Haldanes impeccably run operation.  Boddington has hunted with ZDS on a number of occasions and apparently also rates them highly.

Poens skill is truly impressive for a young man in his mid 20s.  Like the brave public safety personnel his age I have been blessed to work with over the years, he is a highly motivated, professional man of integrity with mounds of good judgment.  He was also a fun and interesting guy to spend ten days with in the middle of nowhere.    My previous experience with a PH in South Africa has afforded me the ability to see the difference between someone who makes a living as a PH and someone who happens to get paid for something he is so passionate about that he would probably do it for free.

After being burned on my previous African hunt, I obtained and checked six references who I duly interrogated to find any evidence of poor quality for Delta Safaris.  No such evidence was uncovered and I booked our hunt. To say that the expectations of my brother and I were exceeded in all areas would be an understatement.  The hunt was exciting, relaxing, interesting, memorable and absolutely fun.  Had I been able to find some way to hang out there another couple of weeks, I would have easily done so.

My occupations have always been of a life and death nature where little room for error can be tolerated.  I work with some of the worlds top subject matter experts in my field and can tell the difference between those who are good and those who are great at what they do.  While I am an easygoing person, I am pretty demanding when it comes to preparing for a gunfight or a terrorist attack and wanted to be accompanied by skilled associates should I (as ended up being the case) end up facing a massive buffalo that will not run out of bullets or adrenalin when charging in heavy cover.  Poen has the nerves of a veteran street cop combined with knowledge of African game was passed down by his PH father.  Of considerable importance, his technical skills are combined with a burning desire to be a great PH.  The fire in his eyes never dulled, even when we insisted he not take us out into the field when we thought he was coming down with Malaria towards the end of our hunt.    Thankfully, he ended up not having malaria but I dont think we could have talked sense into him if he had.

I have been truly blessed to have had many days in the field over the past thirty five years of hunting, but not a week has gone by that I have not dreamed of my next trip to Mozambique.  I will be booking another hunt with ZDS.  I will insist on having Poen as my PH and I would not even consider booking this hunt with anyone other than Gordie White.  They all truly helped my brother and I enjoy what was truly the hunt of a lifetime.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
The next thing we knew we were on a private charter from Beira, Mozambique to our hunting concession near the Indian Ocean and including the mighty Zambezi River Delta. This concession included beautiful huge old growth coastal forests, savannah, and huge papyrus and reed swamps. Our new home consisted of rondavels in an old Portuguese hunting camp in the forest, probably built in the 1950's. Our first target animal was the elusive forest nyala. While on our way to a prime hunting area, poachers were spotted on a bicycle carrying a bag of smoked bush meat. One guy ran into the forest and got away but we managed to catch the other poacher with the meat. He was handcuffed in the back of the truck.

Several nyalas were spotted grazing in old abandoned gardens under the forest canopy. A huge bull was behind the females. Kayleigh and her P.H. (professional hunter) got into position. A perfect shoulder shot was taken and the bull was down. Huge thick spiraled horns with ivory tips were seen sticking out of the vegetation. A pole was cut and with the help of the poacher and our trackers, the bull was carried out of the forest.

Tsetse flies were terrible in some areas. Pesky little critters with their wicked stings always trying to get to our blood. Hopefully sleeping sickness had been eradicated from these flies! Thousands of big black ants filed by like cars on a freeway across fallen logs. Bet they would pick your bones clean if given half a chance!

While hunting Cape buffalo in the forest, a herd had caught our scent and
thundered by, mere feet from our location leaving only bushes shaking. Wow, that was a close call! Our guns held at the shoulder, but we never glimpsed a single one.

I was told that the huge black spiders on the ceiling in my room were not aggressive this time of the year. Kayleigh and I both took malaria medication, some of the side effects are that you go off on someone for no reason or at times you feel paranoid. Not the best of thoughts while deep in the African bush. After a 2 1/2 hour Argo amphibious vehicle ride deep into the swamp, we spotted a monster waterbuck bull. We had crawled and stalked through water, mud, and muck, and finally a long shot off the shooting sticks. Kayleigh had taken the gorgeous bull waterbuck.

On our way into the swamp an eight foot python was encountered. Myself and the PH got out wanting to catch it for a few quick photos. As the PH grabbed its tail, its head came back with lighting speed and its huge mouth agape. Let's just say the plan to catch this thing was abandoned quickly.

Many rivers of all sizes and depths were crossed. They were all chocked with papyrus, reeds and other water plants. If snakes, monitors lizards, spiders, frogs, hippos and crocs bother you, then you may want to skip this part of the trip.

Several days later we were back deep in the swamp in a larger amphibious vehicle, this time after Cape buffalo. Herds were spotted by glassing for white egrets which feed on insects they disturb. Several herds were found and stalked, almost always walking through water anywhere from 6 inches to waist deep! Several hundred buffalo were being glassed by us. Kayleigh was given the signal and up she went on the sticks. With a precise, point of the shoulder shot, the big bull staggered and almost immediately was at the back of the herd. Two more shots and an insurance shot at close range and the big, wide bull was done. Wow, Kayleigh had done it. The bull was hers. Now we were all hyped up and on cloud nine.

The next day we were up stream of the delta in a boat searching for a big croc. We found an island where a nice big one was sunning. The next day a blind was built on another nearby island and Kayleigh executed a nice shot with the' .06. As crocs often do, he kept moving. Three or Four more anchoring shots were taken through the shoulder and spine to prevent the croc from re-entering the river. The huge mouth full of conical teeth were ominous. We were told while on the river that over 50 people had been eaten by crocs on this stretch of the river in the last 12 months.

Now it was time to go back to the swamp for Kayleigh's second buffalo. Camping on the edge of the swamp in tents had an eerie feeling. Hippos honking, crocs splashing, strange noises in the fog and skeeters by the thousands. Even our smoky camp fire and cans upon cans of repellant wouldn't phase these pesky critters.

Next day we had driven over 3 hours into the swamp. A stalk was set up on over 300 buffalos, after over an hour crawling and stalking, the wind changed and the buffalos winded us, running into the distance. We planned to look for another group of animals. A small pond in the middle of the swamp was encountered while crossing. As we entered the pond to cross it, we realized it was quite deep. One our second attempt to pull out of the pond, massive quantities of water rushed inside the vehicle and before we knew it, almost everything inside was swamped out. Guns and backpacks were all wet. My binoculars were found under water. Luckily my iPhone was in a Ziploc bag.

The box with the GPS, satellite phone, bullets, had turned into the water. We took the satellite phone apart and set it in the sun to dry. We had no way to communicate with anyone. The motor was full of water and inoperable. This had been a freak accident. We were forced to swim out of the vehicle with all of our gear, guns, food and water. It was decided for us to try and walk by following our tracks back the way we had come from. We slogged through countless miles of flooded vegetation, swam across many papyrus filled rivers. Elephant, hippo, and croc signs were everywhere. We were getting exhausted from the strenuous exercise of slogging, crawling, and swimming with thousands of ever present mosquitoes. At one point I emerged from a deep river and there were two big green leeches stuck to the webbing between my fingers! When I pulled them off, blood flowed from the wound. We had started walking at 11 :00 a.m. and stopped just before dark in a dry spot full of elephant tracks. Our black tracker started a fire with dried elephant dung and dry water plants since there was no wood in the swamp. Right after dark you could hear the skeeters gearing up for their evening patrol. We continued to put dried reeds on the fire but they only flared up for 14-20 seconds. We were all still damp and it began to get very cold during the clear starry night. We all huddled by the fire exhausted from the trek across the swamp. I covered Kayleigh with open gun cases but we were all shivering.

At 2 a.m., the satellite phone made a sound. Our PH immediately placed a call to someone he knew in South Africa, who in turn finally got in touch with the concession camp manager where we were in Mozambique. Three hours later a rescue team showed up. We were excited. They had brought us warm clothes for the long ride to camp. We didn't arrive back to our main camp until 6:30 a.m. where we slept for two hours then hitched a ride back to Beira via single engine plane.

Nineteen year old huntress, Kayleigh Wright's safaris were over and boy did she have a few stories to tell. Little did she know that she had contracted malaria and would spend 3 days in the hospital back home in New Braunfels, Texas. This was one action packed adventure that she won't forget for a while.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None
Highlights of Hunt: I have always wanted to hunt buffalo in the Marromeu Swamps since reading Harry Manner's book "Kambaku". Was able to harvest 2 buffalo on this trip, a swamp bull and an old dugga boy living in a patch of palm scrub. Also enjoyed a bonus nyala with exceptional mass to his horns and a monster warthog!
Equipment Recommendations: For the swamps I recommend long sleeves and trousers made by Columbia or Magellan that will dry relatively quickly. You will get wet. Also, canvas shoes that allow water to drain from them.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? Absolutely. High game populations for buffalo and sable and serious trophy quality on species like red duiker, suni, nyala, warthog and reedbuck made this hunt very enjoyable.

I want to commend Mark Haldane on bringing game populations back in Coutada 11 and 12 over the last 22 years he has had the areas and making Mozambique a premier safari destination again. I hope our USF&W will take note of the conservation efforts going on here and consider opening the importation of sport-hunted elephant from Mozambique!

To Whom it May Concern,

On September 8, I was booked on your flight DL200 for a flight to Atlanta and then on flight DL200 to continue on to Johannesburg, South Africa. Please note that I was assigned business class seats on both flights.

When I checked in at your priority counter in Los Angeles, the individual checked my passport and stamped "passenger docs ok" on both boarding passes. I enclose copies of these two boarding passes.

When I was boarding the flight to Johannesburg the individual at your gate looked through my passport and said, "you have no fully blank visa pages and I cannot let you board."

There were visa pages that were partially blank and other fully blank pages behind the visa pages. Please note that South Africa does not require a visa from US citizens upon entry, but rather the local customs officials simply put a small stamp in your passport that uses about 1/4 of a page.

I was directed to a service counter where your agent Dolores worked hard to get me rebooked for the next day and furnished me with a hotel voucher. This individual was most helpful. I took a shuttle to what frankly was a very mediocre hotel. Following this I was on my own for meals and the cab fare the next day to the passport office in downtown Atlanta. To obtain the blank pages for my passport required two trips to downtown Atlanta from the hotel near the airport. I arrived at the passport office before 8am and was told to come back at 2:20pm. I followed the instructions and then returned to the Atlanta airport for my departure.

As I had done in Los Angeles, I checked in at the priority counter. The agent who helped me, Lonzie Talbert, was more than helpful. He discovered that the reservations were now all fouled up. At first all he could do was print out a coach seat and after more effort he was finally able to seat me in business class were I belonged. This whole procedure took at least 30 minutes of his time and numerous telephone calls on his part.

This whole situation could been eliminated if your counter person in Atlanta had let me on the first flight. In addition, if there is truly a problem, your counter person in Los Angeles could have told me and I could have delayed the trip by one day and take care of the issues in Los Angeles, which is close to my home. This would have saved considererable cost and inconvenience.

In my opinion I am entitled to some consideration from Delta Airlines for the portion of this costly and untimely delay.

Sincerely,
David E. Combs
