Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: With exception of nilgai, the game animals have not been bothered by last year's "winter kill" and this year's unusual cold snap in November. Nilgai are sensitive to below freezing temperatures and very susceptible to pneumonia. It was evident that some of the older nilgai bulls and some calves were missing from the area. And, the usually numerous nilgai communal dung piles were far fewer than those seen in the previous three seasons I have been at the ranch. But - there are good nilgai bulls available to hunt, not only on the ranch, but on the big ranch that adjoins the property on the north boundary. The nilgai on that property have not been severely affected and arrangements have been made to take the Yturria's and WSI's clients "across the fence" for nilgai, if needed. According to the guide, nilgai cows usually have two calves and the herd will bounce back to it's previous level in a couple of years. When that happens, there are more than enough nilgai. And, hunters have an opportunity to hunt for a reduced-price cow in lieu of or even in addition to, the usual bull nilgai. Bottom line - you want a nilgai hunt? Give WSI a call and they will work with you. The whitetail deer herd is very good. But, hunters are not allowed the usual "free doe" as in previous years. Due to weather, fawn production has been less than desired. While you can no longer take a doe along with your buck deer, you now can take as many feral hogs as you wish. So, you actually have more hunting opportunities than in previous years. This was my fourth year at the ranch. Every year I book the same deer hunt, which is the "Classic Eight" buck hunt. I then add on one exotic, on a trophy fee basis. This year, I again saw ample older 8 and/or 9 point whitetails and had no problem getting my deer. Gemsbok are hunted at a different Yturria Ranch about an hour from the ranch where I stay and do most of my hunting. I had hunted on that ranch in 2010 and saw more gemsbok on that trip than on this trip. But - that needs to be qualified! 2010,2011, & 2012 were very dry years in that part of the country. Ground foliage was very low. Very few leaves were on the bushes, shrubs, and trees. Visibility was far better, as far as spotting game. Due to the unusually heavy late rains this year, I have never seen the country look so lush and green! You could believe that you were seeing it in a "late, wet, spring" season. This year, you really had to look hard and carefully to see the game. But I saw gemsbok and was able to get a clean shot at a very nice big bull who lingered just a second too long for a "second look"!! Both the deer and the gemsbok had plenty of fat under their hides. The game animals are all eating well! Hunting is done out of the guide's "safari car" and no permanent or elevated blinds are used. For photography of game animals, or for a chance at feral hogs, small "doghouses" can be set up. Yes, this is south Texas. No, you don't sit in a permanent blind over a corn pile!!

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt:
Highlights of Hunt: This was my 7th hunting trip with WSI and my fourth at the Yturria Ranches. I have already sent in my deposit for 2014. Without exception, I would recommend WSI for any of the numerous hunts that they offer. This was the first time that Jennifer came with me on a hunt. She was very happy with the accommodations, meals, service, and the variety of species of animals that she was able to see and photograph. Like me, she is anxious to get back there again next year!

GAME DESCRIPTION
Major Game Animals Taken: Deer, Whitetail - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Good
Hog, Wild - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Small
Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: I saw more bucks in the first day of hunting than I've probably seen in all my previous deer hunting days put together. We rattled in 10 bucks the first day, and that was a blast. The deer are not big-bodied, which can make the racks look bigger than they are, so I was a bit surprised to learn that the nice 8-pointer I shot only scored 120"+ (but that didn't matter to me anyway). I will only hunt low-fence ranches, and I understand that the trophy quality tends to be a bit better on the high-fence ones.

I'd dreamed of deer hunting in Texas for nearly 30 years, and this trip did not disappoint. I saw more bucks in the first day of hunting than I've probably seen in all my previous deer hunting days put together. We rattled in 10 bucks the first day, and that was a blast. The deer are not big-bodied (by northern standards), which can make the racks look bigger than they are, so I was a bit surprised to learn that the nice 8-pointer I shot only scored 120"+ (but that didn't matter to me anyway). I will only hunt low-fence ranches, and I understand that the trophy quality tends to be a bit better on the high-fence ones. Wildlife Systems runs a first-class operation, with good guides, food and accommodations. They are very organized.

This was a great overall hunt and again the experience in hunting a historic ranch of the southwest added to experience. Greg's outfit was well run and the property held an abundance of Pronghorn. Due to the drought conditions in the southwest horn growth was not what it normally is, but I took a very good animal and believe there is potential here for trophy pronghorn.

I have hunted with Wildlife Systems, Inc on a number of occasions and, given that I live and work in Japan, my hunting trips to Texas with them have all been outstanding. As stated before, the high level of professionalism and competence really makes a difference. From the initial greeting, zeroing in the weapons, safety briefs, lodge amenities, food, camaraderie, hunting and care of the game...it has been fun, relaxing and informative. I highly encourage anyone wanting to hunt in Texas to give Greg Simmons a call and take it from there.
