Kudu - Availability: I was too picky. Game Condition Comments: Gemsbok bulls run an average of 36-37 inches. Saw some at 38 inches. I was looking for a 40 inch bull. Kudu and gemsbok were plentiful. I was looking for a 60 inch kudu.

Problems of Hunt: PH who was assumed was not available when we arrived. Wingshooting was advertised but not really condoned on the property. Highlights of Hunt: Lots of animals. Accommodations and food were excellent. Shot a 4 inch steenbok. Mountain zebra hunting was a lot of fun. Equipment Recommendations: Don't bother to bring a shotgun. I did. Major Game Animals Taken: Kudu - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Two. SCI Gold. Gemsbok/Oryx - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Two. SCI Gold one and one Silver. Zebra - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Hartmann mountain zebra. Beautiful stallions. Warthog - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Two. SCI Bronze. Springbok - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: SCI Gold. Hartebeest, Red - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: SCI Bronze. Game Sought But Not Taken: Duiker, Common - Availability: Saw only one during daylight hours. It was gone too quickly for a shot. Game Condition Comments: The game we saw (more than 100/day) was in superb condition. We saw a number of animals that exceeded the size of our trophies. Elephants & giraffes abounded. Steenbok were everywhere. We could have spent the entire safari just viewing the birds. A hunter could not ask for a better safari experience.

From Dulles to Johannesburg the flight was late nearly causing us to miss our connection to Windhoek. Our luggage was delayed in Jo Burg and did not arrive until the next day. Food was mediocre at best.

SUMMARY REMARKS

Problems of Hunt: Hardly a problem, but I wish that I could have stayed another 10 days. The first day we say lots of animals but most were too small (PH's opinion not mine) to shoot. We saw a very large kudu first thing but he was gone before there was any chance of a shot. I gained about 6 pounds on the cuisine. Highlights of Hunt: The entire Westfalen staff and ranch. Elephant Camp where we stayed was Shangri La. John's (our PH) knowledge of the game was encyclopedic. His patience with a pair of tyros was remarkable. Sherryl's oryx dropped to the shot at 80 yards. Sherryl's kudu and warthog within about 20 minutes on the same day as her oryx. The entire safari was a highlight film! Equipment Recommendations: If you plan other travel with your safari use Westfalen's rifles. They are top of the line! During the period we were there, the weather was mild. No need for a lot of clothes. Laundry is done every day. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? I have never met nicer people in over 50 years of hunting. The game is there in quantity and very good trophies are available if you hunt reasonably hard and are selective. The value of the hunt is as good as it gets. Dollar for dollar I doubt one could have a better experience.

We will go back! One trip to Westfalen Farm is just not enough. We hope to take our grandsons in 2009 or 2010 if they develop an interest in hunting. We simply cannot describe what a positive experience we had on this safari. I would recommend this experience to anyone (novice or grizzled veteran) who wants to enjoy Africa at its best.

Game Condition Comments: Hunting was done by ambush and spot and stalk, very little sitting at waterhole. Saw lots of game each day. Beautiful scenic country.

Problems of Hunt: Walked up to six hours a day and still gained weight. Food was fabulous and plentiful. Highlights of Hunt: Second time hunting here. Took a 58" kudu bull on first trip, a 57" kudu bull on this trip. Glassed this bull from a rock mountain and stalked the 500 yards for the shot. Equipment Recommendations: Red scarf around you neck, makes the photograph of you and your trophy pop with the Namibian blue sky as a back drop. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? The expertise of John and Juliana, who own Westfalen Safaris. John's knowledge of the game and their pattern. Juliana's ability to make you feel like one of the family.
