I also took a bearded wildebeest, 28 inches; lesser kudu, 29 inches; busbuck, 17 inches; hippo, small ivory; zebra, nice male; jackal and baboon.
I booked this hunt through and with PH Geoff Wainwright on the recommendation of several friends who have hunted with him. Geoff turned out to exceed all our expectations as both a guide and PH. His leopard and lion celebrations can only be prepared to a wedding reception or the birth of ones first child. In our second camp at Lake Natron we hunted with Nick Pretorius and Rolf Trappe. Both were excellent and I can recommend them all without hesitation.
The outfitter was Franz Wengert of Wengert Windrose Safaris. After a fair amount of research I believe he has the best concessions available for the mixed bag hunt I wanted. There were no surprises at the end of the hunt and the final bill was several thousand dollars less then he had quoted me when I booked the hunt. I find it interesting that I have had fewer problems with honesty and integrity in my dealings with African outfitters then those in North America.
We only had minor problems with KLM. We had a two-day layover in Amsterdam and were able to store our firearms with the KLM office there. They assured us our guns would be loaded on the flight to Arusha and they were. However, once we left them with KLM in Amsterdam we were not allowed to see them until their arrival at our final destination. This combined with KLM's awful reputation regarding lost guns made for some worries.
Franz Wengert told us that KLM refuses to ship trophies on its flights. This and the lost guns that have been reported in the past by The Hunting Report will make us consider flying South African Air on our next trip. Regardless the flights will be booked through Steve at Gracy Travel. He did an excellent job and provided a great deal of information.
Recommendations: If traveling to the Moyowoshi area be prepared for the Tsetse flies. They are awful and loved to feast on slightly chubby dentists. Repellants had no affect. Bug clothing and netting seems to be the only answer. We rented a Satellite phone. It worked perfectly and was worth the money. I brought several pairs of binoculars. I lent these to the tracker and skinner during the hunt and they proved excellent in spotting game. The camps always appreciate gifts such as t-shirts, mag lights, hats etc.
Problems: the Tsetse flies are a pain. The good news is that where the Tsetse flies are bad there are less people and domestic animals, therefore more game. A good trade off. In our first camp we had trouble getting the truck started and there was no back up vehicle. If the truck would have completely died we would have lost a lot of hunting time. There was a lot of dust in the Lake Natron/Masialand area. This did not bother my wife or I but the people before us felt the dust in Masailand was worse then the Tsetse's in Moyowoshi.

For those going to Tanzania who want an alternative to KLM, I would heartily recommend Swiss Air. I am one of those unfortunate hunters who experienced heavy-handed treatment from KLM on a previous trip to Tanzania, and even though that carrier professes to have cleaned up its act, I took no chances and booked my recent trip on Swiss Air. I can report that they fly three times a week from Zurich to Dar es Salaam, making a brief stop in Nairobi. We flew over to Zurich on Delta (also excellent service) and had about a ten-hour layover in that city. I had absolutely no trouble leaving the airport with all of my bags, including my rifle case, inasmuch as Immigration and Customs in Zurich is cursory, at best. The Airport Hilton is about five minutes from the airport, and has an ample supply of day rooms for those, like myself, who want to sleep during the layover.
The Swiss Air Business Class service to Dar es Salaam is excellent, and the arrival time there (7:30 a.m.) gives one plenty of time to clear customs and meet his professional hunter, or, as in my case, to make a connecting Air Tanzania flight to Arusha. One has to make sure, however, that his rifle import and export permits are issued out of the city at which he will clear customs, and depart from the country. In my case, the permits were issued by the customs office at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, and the customs officers in Dar es Salaam initially told me that they were no good at that airport, a situation which I rectified in the usual manner. I had the same problem on the way out with the export permit, but resolved it in the same manner.
For those returning to the U.S. the Swiss Air flight to Zurich leaves Dar es Salaam at 9:05 a.m. and arrives in Zurich at 6:05 p.m., thereby allowing the traveler to get a good night's sleep at the airport hotel before the long flight back. Delta's check-in and other services in Zurich are handled by Swiss Air, which used to have a code share arrangement with them. American Airlines is their new code share partner, so a hunter could leave any city in the U.S. served by American and depart from any of the several Swiss Air gateway cities in the U.S. and travel on that carrier to Tanzania, through Zurich, all on an American Airlines ticket (which gets you the total mileage on your American Advantage frequent flyer program).

PH's (both Geoff and Peter as well as Gordon Church) were superb. All were into stalking and no shooting from vehicles. These are great guys and a lot of fun. I have hunted three times with Wengert and Windrose and the hunts were exceptional on each occasion. |

Enclosed is my hunt report from my last safari with Windrose and Wengut. It's apparent I enjoyed it immensely.
Often we look back in such trips and recall them fondly, realizing only later how great a trip it was. On this safari it was apparent from day one that this would be special. The great thing was that I realized it at the time and this increased the enjoyment even more. Every day was different and seemed better than the last. Nothing was shot from a vehicle

A wide brim hat, temperatures 100 degrees and higher. Good walking shoes, shell belt holder, good optics and lots of ammo!! |
