I went on this trip with two hunting buddies. We all agree that this was one of our best hunting experiences ever. On the South Island we hunted Tahr by Helicopter. What an experience. Most of the mountains we hunted on in the South Island could not be climbed without mountaineering equipment. They offered to take us by foot if we wanted to hunt in that manner. The helicopter makes it possible to hunt the Tahr in a short amount of time. The helicopter pilot and guide were tremendous. Safety was a primary consideration in every thing they did. After hunting we were able to fly over Mt Cook and the Fox Glacier. That was some of the most incredible scenery that I have seen. After hunting Tahr we flew to the North Island for Stag. All 3 of us took SCI Gold medal stags. The lodge was excellent with gormet cooking, private bedrooms and baths. This is a hunt you could take your wife on with no complaints about the accommodations. The stag hunt was free range. The trophy quality of the private ranch was excellent. There is a sliding trophy fee based upon the score of the stag. I shot what I was booked for. One of my hunting partners upgraded. He was told the price and the score before he shot the stag with no surprises afterwards. In addition to what we hunted we saw abundant Fallow deer and Feral sheep.

I have hunted all over the world and was lucky enough to collect the grand slam and the big five and many others. Still my hunt with Wanganui Safaris, June 1-8, 2002 is one of my most pleasant hunting experiences. After corresponding with several hunting outfits in New Zealand, I signed a contract with Paul Bamber of Wangánui Safaris for gold medal: Red Stag Fallow Deer Tahr Chamois My wife came along on this hunting trip as an observer photographer. Paul picked us up in Wanganui and drove us to his hunting lodge which my wife quickly renamed "The Eagles Nest". A comfortable lodge with all of the hunting luxuries. Although I hunted red stag at Parque Diana in Argentina and in Hungary where the best red stag trophies have been obtained, I never have seen such an abundance of red deer as around the lodge. Seeing all those beautiful trophies, I decided to upgrade my contract from gold medal stag to the "elite" category. Every day we saw beautiful gold medal stags but we were looking for an outstanding bull. Finally, Mark, the best guide there, took over guiding me. We noticed five gold medal stags on the skyline out of which one was outstanding. After several hours of stalking and hard climbing, I was almost in a shooting position when the stags noticed us and disappeared. In about half an hour, four stags reappeared again but the big one was missing. Our perseverance paid off, Almost an hour later the big one came out. I got him at approximately 200 yards with one shot. He scored 401 6/8 SCI and had antlers 11 X 12 = 23. A truly outstanding world class stag. The fallow deer hunt was again an exciting experience. Bruce spotted a good bull up on the hillside. We could not get close to him. I had to shoot a rather long distance (over 200 yards) but I got a nice gold medal trophy, which scored 228 6/8 SCI. Then we had to fly to Christchurch on the Southern Island where a guide named Chris greeted us, After some very interesting sightseeing, we went on a helicopter assisted hunt for tahr. Helicopter assisted means that the helicopter drops you off at a place in the mountain favoured by tahrs, leaves you there with the guide and comes back to pick you up at a pre-arranged time. Soon after the helicopter left, we spotted several good bull tahr. Chris decided that those were not good enough for us, We kept climbing to the top of the mountain and glassing for more tahr. We saw many females and some nice bulls. Finally, Chris decided on an old bull with long shaggy mane. We were able to close in to about 130 yards of him. I got the bull with one shot. However, when we got to the bull, Chris noticed that on one side the horn was groomed back. It did not make the gold medal I contracted for. In the evening, we met Mark Haynes, an outstanding guide who drove us to Wanaka to get a gold medal chamois and tahr. In the morning, the helicopter took us to a steep mountain and left us there. The terrain on the snow level proved to be much harder than anticipated. Since I already collected the Grand Slam of North American sheep, I had ample experience in sheep hunting. I had considerable difficulty to climb to a ridge. From there we spotted seven chamois at a fair distance from us. Mark picked the one, lying down on a shale outcrop approximately 430 yards from us. He suggested that I should attempt this very long shot. I fired a shot with a .300 Win. Magnum, wounding the rear end of the chamois. Finally, I finished the animal from 100 yards Unfortunately, it turned out to be a female. Shortly after, we spotted a big male chamois, which I shot from about 150 yards. It turned out to be an outstanding gold medal trophy which scored 26 3/8 SCI. The next day we went to a different mountain where I shot a world class tahr which cored 43 SCl. Mark knows the game and where to obtain the best trophies. Both my wife and I immensely enjoyed our stay with Wanganui Safaris. I recommend to my fellow sport hunters to book with Paul Bamber. There is plenty of game in Paul's land. The only negative point of the location is that it is very muddy when raining. With that sticky mud on your boots, it is hard to walk It should be noted that the outfitters in New Zealand earn their living from client hunters. Read your contract carefully before signing it. The fee schedule may change after signing the contract especially if you decide to upgrade from the contract you signed. Paul Bamber kept his side of the eight days of hunting contract to the last detail. I highly recommend him.
