| Problems
of Hunt: |
This was opening weekend. Many local hunters seen. Still saw elk every day. Camp tents needed zippers or buckles on tents. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Seeing elk every day. Great scenery. Northern Arizona is not too steep. Fairly easy to get around in. Took first bull elk after two unsucessful hunts in Colorado. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good hiking boots. Accurate muzzleloader (out to 200 yards). Rangefinder. Good binoculars. Wear layers, cold at first light, warms up quickly. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Great organization. Guides had back-up plans. Good equipment (trucks, ATVs). Camp was ready for 8 hunters. USO does all research for top areas and submits all application paperwork for you. |

| Physical Condition: |
Pretty good for a 45 year old. Was in real good shape for this hunt, probably over-ready. You need to be able to hike for long distances wearing your day pack and carrying your gun. You need to be ready for the altitude (5000-7000'). |

|
Story of this hunt: After two unsuccessful elk hunts in Colorado, a few years ago I decided to try it again. Via United States Outfitters (USO), I signed up to draw for a tag in several states. Unsuccessful in both 2005 & 2006, I drew an Arizona unit 6A late season muzzleloader permit for 2007. Summer testing showed the most accurate of my two muzzleloaders was CVA rifle I had bought for my son. The most accurate load was 150 gr of Pyrodex RS with a Hornady 250 grain SST bullet. November 14 arrived, and I headed to Arizona via commercial air. I arrived in Flagstaff with all my gear, and the next day met the USO staff and the other hunters in the hotel lounge. We eventually loaded up the trucks and headed to camp. I rode with Robert, one of USO's guides. We would be camping and hunting in the Cococino National Forest, near Mormon Lake Village. Arriving at camp we unloaded, had a quick lunch, and then went to a local gravel pit to check the accuracy of our rifles. I had to tweak my scope settings a little to get back on target. After dinner, my guide, Bill Johnson, talked over some details for the next day. The next day started early at 4:30 am, the standard wake-up time for the week. After a quick breakfast, we headed out. We eventually parked and headed out on foot up and over a small hill. About sun-up we spotted a solo spike bull nearby, and then later we spotted a group of 18 elk, composed of cows, calves, and young bulls. They appeared to be a little spooky, and quickly headed towards the same wooded area where the young bull had entered. After lunch, Bill and I headed out to another area to a ridgeline to try and intercept any elk heading up or down the canyon. No animals were seen or heard that afternoon. . At dinner we found most hunters were seeing animals, with a few shots being taken. The next day, in a different area, we spotted a small group of elk right away, and Bill and I headed off on the double to try and intercept them. After about a ½ mile, we slowed down and became more cautious. Sure enough we spotted the small band, which had a good 5x5 bull in it. I had previously told Bill that I wanted a 6x6 until the last day, which then any mature bull was in trouble. We followed this band, and soon ran into another group of elk. Bill was able to spot a monster of an elk in this group, and I could see his antlers were clearly visible nearly ¼ mile away. We were quietly gaining ground on the big bull and his herd, when we spooked a cow elk on our left. She ran to the big bull's group, spooking them out ahead of us. . Eventually we gained ground on the herd again, and the big bull was broadside at about 200 yards, but some large laydown limbs between me and the bull kept me from being confident in the shot, and I did not shoot. I didn't want to miss and totally spook the herd, or worse yet, make a non-lethal hit on the bull. . Eventually the herd moved out, and we lost track of them. Later we saw a herd of over 20 elk running to our right, and we think the big bull's group joined in. After a shot rang out down where the elk had moved to, I quickly spotted movement as the herd came back up towards us. We were caught out in the open as the big bull and his buddies approached us on the other side of a thicket. We could see his antlers very clearly as they closed to no more than 50 yards, but I did not have a shooting lane. Eventually the elk moved off, and did not pass through the opening we hoped they would. That was the last time we saw the big boy. Later we were working into the wind when we spooked a jackrabbit. It ran around some trees, and a herd of elk busted out moving to the left. We couldn't believe we had been that close to a bunch of elk without seeing, hearing, or smelling them. Late in the morning we were resting in a shady spot when I spotted movement ahead. It turned out to be a group of 5 bulls heading toward us, with at least two of them being mature animals. The first one we got a good look at was very unique. He was a 6x6, but extremely narrow, not much wider than his ears. But the most distinguishing aspect was huge 4th points, easily over 20" long each. Unfortunately, the bull never did give me a clear shot. The other mature bull had small 6th points on each side, but good overall length and width. This bull did give me a good quartering away shot, which I took. I was reloading as fast as I could and also watching an opening in the trees the now galloping elk would pass through. I saw a couple of elk pass through, then a large bull entered the opening but then wheeled back to the right and out of sight. . After reloading, I moved straight to where the elk was standing when I shot. It was approximately 110 yards from my shooting location. I felt I had aimed correctly for that distance. About the time I discovered some blood, Bill, who had moved directly to the opening we saw the one bull turn to the right, started whistling at me. I wasn't sure what that meant, but started moving to him on the double. As I got to him with the gun at the ready, he said, "there's your bull", and I turned with the gun ready. What I saw was a bull down on the ground, not moving. We approached cautiously, but with his eyes glazed open and not breathing, I knew the bull was down for good. Bill had called his fellow guide Kevin before we started the pictures, and he and his hunter Wayne showed up soon. The four of us had the bull quartered out and caped in short order. After several hours, Bill returned with an ATV (in Arizona you can use an ATV for game retrieval). I started out cross-country to the truck by GPS while Bill took the fully loaded ATV and went via approved trails. Bill was just finishing strapping down the ATV when I arrived at the truck. At camp we unloaded, hanging the meat in a tree to cool. Jim the cook, and guide Robert and his hunters Phil and Steve, all came over to congratulate me. At dinner that night the other hunters and guides reported no other elk taken, but they all congratulated me, and I graciously thanked them. I tried to keep their spirits up as I told my story of the hunt. The next morning at breakfast, I said good-bye to each hunter and guide, as I would be flying back home that afternoon. I finished packing up my stuff, and helped Bill load the truck. We headed into Flagstaff, stopping by the meat processor and then a taxidermist, who would prepare the European mount I wanted, and ship it to me later. After lunch, Bill dropped me off at the airport. I got checked in with no problems, made my short layovers in Phoenix (just barely) and Denver, and arrived in Moline just after 11 pm. It was good to be home, and later I realized it had taken three different hunts, and three attempts to get this Arizona hunting tag, before I harvested my first Rocky Mountain elk. It truly was "3rd times a charm".

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Game was too scarce and there were too many hunters for available area. There was competition with local hunters and some guides were out of state and not familiar with local area. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
|
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
|
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
I would recommend it with reservations. Outfitter and guide (Tom Johnson) were excellent and tried hard for all hunters in camp. However, I feel US Outfitters is overexploiting the area, and game is getting scarce. They continue to book too many hunters for the area available. |

Condition Comments: |
Mule deer are in excellent health but horn quality is not good, so too many small bucks are killed. Our camp shot five mule deer, two 150 class and three under 145 B&C. This is not trophy hunting. We did not see 180 class deer. |
