We were in camp last week of season so Caribou numbers were a little low. However, we saw a fair number of shooter bulls. Two bull limit. Of eight hunters in camp fifteen bulls were shot. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Very windy at times. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Being there with my daughter and having her spot and shoot the first Caribou. Guides & cook were great & helpful with having a young female hunter in camp. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good rain gear not only for the wet weather but to protect from the wind as well. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Advance information packets regarding every aspect of the trip were the most complete I have ever seen. Knew exactly when and where things would occur. This included a taxidermist being at the hotel the night we returned as well as having the meat processed overnight and in a freezer ready to go to the airport the next morning. |

I would rate this outfitter and hunt from very good to excellent. Awesome according to my daughter. Even though we were at the end of the migration the guides worked extremely hard to find and harvest nice bulls. |

Sammy Cantafio is without doubt one of the most organized outfitters I have hunted with. I have been on about twelve outfitter hunts so far and he is certainly very high on the list. I would recommend Ungava Adventures for anyone looking for an excellent caribou hunting experience.

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The country can provide some high wind days with rain. Cabins were very nicely heated on those days. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Great guide who could hike and spot game and knew the lay of the country and path of travel for the animals. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Prepare for wind and rain. Take your meat home -- easily the best wild animal meat we ate in N. America, and that says a lot as we have taken 28 of the N. America big game animals. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |

They can accommodate any type of hunter. The guides can set the pace and difficulty of hunt for anyone. |

Very good for being in our 50- 60s. I might add that my wife is an also an avid hunter and got the two biggest bulls of the entire camp. On our next hunt she will be looking for a lion in Mozambique. |

I would like to correct your article in your recent issue. I read it on my trip to Asia. The hunters that were flying out when we were coming in reported they all filled out in three days. The day before we arrived they saw over 1,000 caribou from camp. Also, I didn't know Sammy was retiring, you may want to check that information. I have hunted all the caribou species and know most are moving at all times, so you need to expect good, great and poor days when hunting. Again, this meat was fantastic, very, very tender with only a hint of wild game taste. Unbelievable for caribou.

I have hunted extensively in Africa as well as Alaska, Yukon, Montana, Northern Quebec. I have found Sam to be an outstanding outfitter. His operation is flawless and the game is plentiful. Also the hunt is able to accommodate people of varying physical fitness levels. The guides are friendly, hard working, and fun to be around. The food is wholesome, delicious, and lots of it. I have made 8 trips with Sam and this is one of the best big game hunts I have done. Simply a very professional, well organized hunt with no guarantees other than you will be well looked after and you will see lots of game. You have to hunt but in eight trips I have shot 15 caribou, numerous ptarmigan, and caught lots of fish. The name of the camp is Charlie Camp and it has become a home away from home for me.

Condition Comments: |
Sammy runs a great operation. We were greeted at our hotel in Montreal and instructions were given to all hunters as to what to expect and what would happen with meat/capes/antlers when we were ready to head back to Montreal. We were again met at the airport in Kuujjuaq (by Sammy himself) and he again filled us in on what to expect and for the rest of our trip to camp, and some tips on the hunting and fishing we were about to experience. Camp was well laid out. Cabins were warm and dry there was lots of room. Meals were very hearty and the home baking and fresh baked bread probably had something to do with me gaining 6 lbs. during the hunt. My guide was very good at what he did. Put us on caribou, caped and de-boned an animal like he could do it in his sleep, and packed all to the boat. We almost had to fight him to let us carry anything. He also got us into some of the best brook trout fishing anyone could ask to experience. I would not hesitate to return to Sammy's Charlie Lake camp for another taste of the Arctic. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
I had no problems with hunt at all. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Shot my dream caribou. Even made the guide squeal in delight when he saw it. Brook trout fishing was incredible and ptarmigan hunting was also a great way to spend some down time. After the food, the best thing about the whole trip was being able to have a hot shower whenever you wanted. No water out of a bag in the bush, but a real hot water(propane hot water tank)shower, and flush toilets. How good is that for out in the middle of nowhere in the Arctic? |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Best thing I had with me were my Tundra boots from Cabelas. Have used on 3 hunts now and haven't had a wet foot yet. Even rolled the boot up and waded in the river to fish. The boots and a real good range finder/binocular. I used a Bushnell rangefinding binocular. Won't hunt without it. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Because I would go with anyone I could talk into going. I have been on a fair number of hunts and this one was about the most relaxed atmosphere hunt I have been a part of. That, added to the fact I love the Arctic pretty much, has me thinking of a return visit. |

There was another Ontario hunter in camp who was making his 6th trip to Sammy's camp, and he booked for the following year before he left. I now know why. Great outfit, great camp and great people in camp. The caribou and brookies were just the icing on the cake.

This is a well organized, well run hunt. Sammy is available to talk for any questions, but his regular communication via email was comprehensive and left you with few questions. This was my second hunt. First one was in 2001 during 9/11. At first blush, the boats used looked a little rough, but they were OK. The motor broke down on us one day but we got back ok. They find a way to make things work given it is so remote. The hunting was fun. Mostly by boat, then stalk once animals have been located. Some stand hunting during mid day when animals are not moving. Shot can be over 300yds but most are shorter. A bow hunter is at a big disadvantage since there is little cover to hide behind. Our guide said he liked bowhunters since he had less meat to haul... First day of hunting was a bit slow. Second day things picked up and we had lots of action. While fishing we saw other animals, some bigger than what we got. Plenty to pick from. Our guides were great, the cook was good. Food was good. Don't miss out on the caribou stew. Not 5 star dining but I didn't go for the food. Cabins were comfortable and warm. Take as many warm showers as you wish. Hunting was mostly from 7am to 5PM. No late nights out, but they were not needed either. I am a dawn to dark hunter, but this was fine. Fishing for arctic char and lake trout was a blast. The char were delicious too. I have been to both Charlie Camp and North Camp. I prefer the North Camp since most hunting is from boats. Other hunters in our camp did see some muskox on the first day. Guides told us they had problems with polar bears the year before. Yes, it is that far north. I highly recommend it.

Usually I don't bother to relate my hunting trips to anyone except my friends but I had such a good time hunting caribou with the Ungave Adventures hunting staff that I feel I should share the experience with other hunters. I read your newsletters as soon as I receive them and enjoy them very much plus they are very informative and useful.
Now, I booked my hunt with Ungave Adventures when I attended a hunting show in Denver, Colorado on January 2003. I arrived in Montreal, Quebec on September 13, 2005 at the Best Western Hotel about 3pm in the evening. Hunters were instructed to report to a designated meeting place for further instructions, plane tickets, tags, etc. At the meeting that evening we received our airline tickets, baggage tags and the many questions we felt necessary.
Next morning we boarded First Air for Kuujjuaq (Ft. Chimo) and after a short flight we arrived at Kuujjuaq about the middle of the morning. On the flight I enjoyed the best breakfast I have ever had on an airline. We were met by the Ungave personnel and were told to wait awhile because the group required two trips to get all of us up to the hunting camp. I didn't mind because the staff gave us a tour of the town. I wouldn't want to live there. Anyway, shortly we were airborne in a Twin Otter airplane to our camp. The Otter flew very low (for my taste) and we got a good look at the country we were headed for to hunt caribou.
Upon arrival in camp we were shown our quarters for the stay in camp. I was very surprised. The sleeping cabins slept six people with plenty of room for our hunting gear. We had our separate oil heating stove and electric lights until 10pm. I've never had such good accommodations on any previous hunting trip. I was very pleased especially with the wooden floors. These things are important to the hunter that has traveled, in my case 3,000 miles to the camp, and most hunters arrive at camp tired from lack of sleep, hangover or any number of reasons. And when the sleeping cabins are fixed up like these were, it's great. Snoring is another problem however.
There were 18 hunters (six to a cabin) with enough guides to have one guide to two hunters. There were seven boats with outboards for our transportation around the lakes and river. The guides were experienced and enthusiastic (too much for me) and we hunters caught the expectant feeling.
After some lunch we were given a short ride in the boats to get accustomed to the country. We all saw caribou on the ridges and swimming across the narrow lakes. That night the talk was of caribou and fishing. I don't know what happened concerning the other hunters so all I can tell you is what happened to me and my hunting buddy. The second day the wind was blowing so hard that our guide, Nathan decided to take a walk around the shoreline of the lake and see if we could find some caribou. About a mile along the shore we saw some caribou quartering toward the lake. We hurried along out of sight and finally go ahead of them and hid behind a large stone. As they approached my buddy said why don't I take the big bull if I wanted him. He looked good so we waited until they were about 130 yards and I took aim at the largest bull and dropped him in his tracks. I was using a 300 wsm with 180 grain bullets. Then the picture taking took place and processing the meat. While this was going on my buddy slipped around the lake a little further and killed another nice bull.
So the second day of hunting we had the first of our two bulls. The meat was transported back to camp by boat by the guide who really knew what he was doing. The cape and antlers were brought back at the same time. Upon our arrival at camp it was evident by the antlers at the meat house that a lot of bulls were taken that day. All of the antlers were better than average and everyone was pleased and ready for chow or dinner.
The next day I was very particular and didn't shoot anything. But the thrill of watching other hunters stalking and shooting and shouting back and forth was worth the trip. I got my second bull the next day and he was the best one. All the things that were desirable were present on this bull. My buddy tried to get close enough to shoot a bull with his bow but nothing came close enough and he finally shoe one with his 30-06 rifle. After our guide collected all of the camps and meat we went back to camp. Nathan did everything and we tried to help but were only in his way. He was a real professional and it was a pleasure to watch him doing his work. I did not hear of a single instance where someone wasn't taken care of concerning his trophy or meat.
The other hunters got their bulls in short order and then they turned to fishing. The guides knew all about the fishing program. A lot of lake trout were caught along with arctic char. The requirement on fishing was to catch and release due to the lateness of the season. But everyone had a lot of fun catching them and taking pictures of the action.
I bought a bird license to hunt ptarmigan and did pretty well by just walking around the small willow trees. They are fun to hunt and it doesn't take long to collect your birds. I brought them home with me along with the caribou meat.
To sum up the experience it was an adventure of a unique nature. I've never seen so many animals outside a reserve of some kind that were trotting along in small groups of 50 or so animals. This is the ideal hunt for someone who can't walk as far as they used to when they were younger. But I would recommend this type of hunt with this outfitter to anyone. All the things they promise in the brochure are true. Some things like the weather or mechanical breakdowns they can't control. But for us it was an enjoyable experience.
If you or anyone else needs more information just call, write or e-mail and I'll do my best to answer you. I'm not sure this type of letter is what you guys want, if not throw it away but I wanted to share this experience with other hunters.

There are many bears in the area. Based on tracks and sightings I can say that there are bigger bears than mine out there. Most hunters shot a good bear but I didn't wait out the really big ones. When I was hunting, there were nine hunters in camp all of whom shot bears and saw over 50 animals. My brother took a 270 pounder. |

SUMMARY

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Not really a problem, but expect lots of bugs. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
My brother and I shot our bears the same evening. Both had white chest "blazes". All hunters "tagged out." |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Get the best bug jacket you can find. Take bug spray to use in the cabin, and bug medication for bites. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Good outfitter, friendly, knowledgable, and helpful guides. When we were there, six out of nine hunters were repeat clients. We were first-timers. You will see bears. Trout fishing is available in many lakes and streams. Flies are best, but lures also work; average fishing. There are many stand sites and guides are always scouting for more. |

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this very lengthy and late report however, it has taken me this long to finally find and join an organization that truly seems to care about fellow sportsmen. As I said in the report form, this is not a complaint about not collecting the game sought after, (I've been a professional hunter and outfitter in Colorado from 1973-1981), and fully understand what hunting big game is about. As long as the outfitter/guide puts out the effort and lives up to the terms of the contract one should not complain whether or not game is taken.
This is a complaint regarding the outfitter not fulfilling his end of the agreement/contract, and then using extremely profane language and 'national prejudice', to emphasize his anger.
In 1998, and based on numerous personal phone conversations with Sammy Contafio, Owner/operator of "Ungava Adventure:, I booked a caribou hunt.
Mr. Contafio sounded very legitimate and informed, stating I would be placed in a very comfortable base camp to begin my hunt. He said, that in the event no caribou were moving in that area at the time, that he would personally fly my hunting partner and myself to a more remote location and we would continue the hunt from there. He stated we would then be moved accordingly, until such time as the hunt ended. Well as things turned out, there were no caribou at the base camp. Our very polite and professional guide, 'Richard', advised us after two days of fishing, that there hadn't been any caribou in this camp for two years.
With that information I suggested that the camp crew please contact Mr. Contafio and request that we be moved either by himself or other aircraft. That evening we, (there were several other hunters in our camp, eight I believe), were told to cut cards to see which group of four would be moved the next day to another camp where numerous caribou had been seen. I found this not only strange but also highly unprofessional. I asked my guide what he made of the whole thing. Richard said he was forced to go through this 'charade' every year that Mr. Contafio overbooked hunters, and that he was fed up trying to cover for his boss.
After our fourth day I again asked the camp staff to recontact Mr. Contafio and inquire as to when we 'left-over' clients would be moved to another camp. (seven day hunt/with 1/2 of first and last day traveling).
As luck would have it, I just happened to be walking into the kitchen area when the staff had finally reached Contafio on the radio. When advised by the head cook that we 'left over' hunters would appreciate some contact by him, (as agreed to in the verbal/written contract), Mr. Contafio replied, "tell them American mother f----ers I'll be there when I'm good and f---in' ready.
With that, I took the radio "Mike" from the cook and identified myself to Contafio. He immediately said something about a bad transmission and that there was trouble reading us, but that he had plans to move us the next day. I told Contafio that I wished to speak with him in person before we left the area. He agreed to meet with me at the Ft. Chimo airport prior to our departure.
We were moved the evening of the fifth day to another camp. This left us with one day to hunt the new area.
During our last day of the hunt our guide told me that Contafio would see to it that the plane transporting us from camp to the Ft. Chimo airport would arrive late, but just in time for us to have to run to catch our jet flight to Montreal. This way he (Contafio) would never have to face us.
When asked how he, 'Richard', was so sure of the above actions on the part of Contafio, he said, he had seen it happen too many times in the past. He said Sammy Contafio caters to as many 'big shot' publishers, writers, celebs', etc., so as to get the publicity and then over books hunters for his 'bread and butter' money. Then every year several hunters such as myself were left stranded.
Well, we finished our last day of the hunt and guess what? Yes, it was exactly as 'Richard' had stated. Late plane, run to catch jet at Ft. Chimo and no sight of Contafio.
Upon arriving back in Colorado and a cooling off period, I called Contafio. I will not bore you any further with the line of B.S. he attempted to feed me. His final statement and offer was "that's hunting" and that he would consider giving my partner and myself a $2,000 credit if we booked another hunt the next year for $5,000 with him. Needless to say I felt Contafio had stolen enough from us. No deal..
I'm not rich and could not afford to take "Ungava Adventures" to court in Canada, sooo, buyer beware!!! Since this ugly incident I continue to see Contafio in all the hunt publications and on the outdoor channel on T.V. regularly. Maybe crime does in fact pay!!!
Thank you very much for listening to my story. This is one hunting outfitter you might stay away from. Most of these hunt guys are great lot. But, watch out for the snakes!!
Response from Sammy Cantafoio of Ungave Adventures
I am in receipt of hunt report from Mr. Daniel Dirsherl pertaining to his trip with us during the fall of 1998. I will not attempt to even try to respond to his irresponsible comments attacking my character in his personnel summary remarks which I note is not signed. After 30 years of successful outfitting in handling over 15,000 trips to the North with the majority being Americans (96 percent) - you can be assured that this was not accomplished by lying, criticizing and robbing people. In fact sir - I have never been sued in my life!
In response to Mr. Dirsherl's report I will specifically reply to his primary complaint which states that "the outfitter failed to abide by and/or honor terms of contract". I notice that on two locations in his report close to the above complaint he ads "this highly negative report has nothing to do with my lack of hunting success". Who is he trying to kid - In my personal experience I have never ever received a serious negative report from a successful hunter. On the other hand, Sammy is always a crook when the game is scarce and always a hero when game is taken. In the spirit of true sportsmanship in hunting - this is unfortunate but this is a fact!
I enclose a copy of our 1998 "Conditions & Liabilities" which is the contractual agreement between Ungava Adventures and the client. The client in making a reservation with deposit accepts the conditions set forth. The general conditions cover a number of headings that clearly cover important issues of responsibility, trip prices, etc. in the best interest of both parties.
Due to the migratory nature of the caribou under the heading "Procurement of Game or Fish" it very clearly states that we do not assure or guarantee game will be seen or taken.
All correspondence pertaining to Mr. Dirscherl's file on his reservation is available on request should you wish to review all of which contain no guarantees, false promises, etc.
While we cannot guarantee game--as outfitters we must assure reasonable accommodations and meals, a responsible guide and equipment which Mr.Dirscherl has rated from good to excellent.
Under ideal situations of weather, availabilty of aircraft and an alternative camp location within our network which can assure sufficient numbers of animals to hunt successfully--we may elect to move clients to a more productive location at our cost. This was done for Mr. Dirscherl even though caribou in our general area were scarce during the fall of 1998. These moves are at the discretion of the outfitter and are in no way part of the hunt or contract.
In conclusion, I was quite surprised to review Mr. Dirsherl's report and comments particularly six years after the fact. I have not spoken or heard from Mr. Dirscherl since 1998. I have attended the International Sportsmen Show in Denver yearly since then and we have not heard from Mr. Dirschel.
I am known among the hunting fraternity to be a professional and responsible outfitter, understanding and compassionate. But I am also known to be a straight and forward individual with no patience for ignorance. While I continually try to satisfy everyone-- in the real world this is not possible.
If I can provide you with any additional details or information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
