Outfitter Response:
Thank you for contacting me regarding Mr Gregg, I am somewhat surprised at Mr Greggs remarks as he has hunted with me before, all be it some years back. I have had no contact over this complaint you have received, and this is the first complaint I have had in over 25 years of hunting. The Pere David was measured by Mr Gregg immediately after it was harvested and he assured me it was of the standard he required, he measured it!!. In fact I have photos of him with a big smile on his face with the beast. If indeed it was not Silver medal I would ask him to contact me on this issue as he has had his trophies for some time. The other animals he harvested are all of a representative quality and again he made no complaint at the time. The hunt as with all my hunts are based on good representative heads being taken with no extra charges for medal or huge trophy heads as this is hunting. Except with fenced heads which in the case of the Pere David which was fenced. The cost at Woburn for a similar head to that shot is around £6000, Mr Gregg paid £3000. As for the time in sending the trophies I am certainly to blame for this. I contracted Lyme disease, which as you may be aware if untreated can kill, it has taken me some time to recover during which time my 35 year marriage collapsed and I lost nearly everything. I apologized to Mr Gregg, and am gradually getting my life and business back in line. I am somewhat annoyed at Mr Greggs remarks as his last trip with me he shot the Scottish wild record Jap Sika Stag, which I think is now number 6 or 7 in the book. I am also surprised he has not contacted me about his complaint. Thank you Malcolm Harman
|
I believe I reported that there were plenty of Manchurian Sika and we selected one of the best available but he was just an average deer.
In response to Malcolm pointing out my not bringing up the inferior Pere David matter - his reluctance to ship my trophies made me not want to do any complaining that could have caused me to never get the trophies shipped. But, if it concerns him so much, I'd be glad to accept an appropriate rebate on the Pere David cost.
And, as far as my prior hunt with Malcolm, it was a great success, but that did not justify the shipping problem this time or the inferior Pere David deer. Best regards, Roger Gregg

The worst incompetence I have ever seen as regards to the correct procedure to check guns. Took over 40 minutes and at least three different people in both Chicago and London. People were not unpleasant, just clueless. Also lost our luggage in Scotland for a day and were not helpful in finding luggage. Never again. The outfitter won't fly British Airlines because of similar experiences. |

I found out about this hunt through The Hunting Report and am returning the favor. Most of Malcolm's business is American and is down post 9/11. This is real shame because this is an area with a lot of hunting potential. I hunted red stag and roe deer but Malcolm can set up several other types of big game in Scotland or England (fallow deer, mutjac, fenced states, bird shooting). I really felt Malcolm wanted my companion and myself to have an enjoyable experience and would extend himself to make this happen. One aspect of this particular hunt was no trophy fees. I took three animals. A gentleman hunting at the same time took three stags, a huge sika deer, and a roe deer, for no additional trophy fees. My companion had an excellent time touring the area castles, towns and landscapes. Overall, a fabulous experience. I will definitely hunt with Malcolm and Peter again.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
You published an article about hill stag hunting in Scotland in your February 2001 issue with Malcolm Harman. Well, based on that article I decided to give it a whirl but since I have been snake bit lately on recommending outfitters to others I decided to book this one alone.
As it turned out there were four hunters and three wives that went along. The women folk came along at my suggestion. The guys thought I was joking when I brought it up and were shocked when they found out that I was serious. Two of the hunters were Larry R. Bryant casualties by the name of J .B. Wise and Carl Urban. The other fellow was from my area and I had hunted with him before.
It seems that Carl, J.B., and Randy felt safe with this PH. As Carl put it, "look Dick, if you have booked this guy I know that you have looked him over inside and out and Heven help him if we get a screw job". Don, as glowing, as the article was it never came close to explaining how wonderful this outfitter and hunt was. This is about the only y time that I have received more then was promised or I bargained for. There are no hidden charges, everything is up front. It's difficult for me to put into words the I super time that we all had. This is the type of hunt and PH that all hunters dream of coming in contact with!
Fantastic hunt, and I do mean hunt. Plenty of game, plenty of walking. It takes awhile just to get over the fact that you are actually hunting in the hills of the Scottish highlands. The Ladies were kept as busy as they wanted and were handled and cared for in great Scottish style.
Don, please do your readers a great big favor and do a follow up on Malcolm. Every hunter should do this hunt and take their wife with them. This is an affordable dream hunt. Our hunt dates were Oct 6, thru Oct 13. Stag and sika hunt all-inclusive except for tips was $2,800.00.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
First a few comments to make the hunt report form more understandable. All three species listed as abundant, but that doesn't mean you will see dozens each day. For example in late September when I hunted, the roe deer rut is long over and roe bucks are extremely shy and stay secluded. But that doesn't mean they are scarce, they are just very hard to find. All three species listed as representative trophy size. I don't think readers care what size head someone else shot, I think they are more interested in what to reasonably expect if they book a similar hunt. This is a truly wild and fair-chase hunt. They are not behind a fence where you know the trophy size before going in. Malcolm Harman sells this hunt as one expecting to take representative mature males of the specie. But you don't know what is going to come out of the woods. It just might be a medal head, and medal heads are certainly present in the areas we hunted. There were three people hunting Chinese water deer in the area. All three got deer and two were gold medal. There were two people hunting muntjac in the area. Both got muntjac. One was a medal head.
As far as costs, Malcolm Harman offered this hunt as the mini-three of England at an all-inclusive flat price. 8 days of stalking 1x1. Malcolm has you from airport to airport. The price of a hunt is a matter between you and your outfitter. It is not fair to either to list prices that could change before the ink is dry. Suffice it to say that if you can afford to hunt caribou in Quebec or Newfoundland, then you can easily afford to hunt the mini-three in England, including your airfare to get there. I found Malcolm's pricing to be very reasonable and in line with the services he provided.
Malcolm Harman has been the subject of a few recent reports in the Hunting Report. All have been very good reports and I can only echo all the good things others have written about him. He is truly professional when dealing with his clients from the time you make initial contact with him all the way through your hunt. The logistics of hunting two areas and getting all three species in eight days is not easy, but Malcolm saw to every detail and everything was first class. He is a very personable fellow, and you will enjoy his company.
You owe it to yourself to visit the English countryside and stalk these animals. The beauty of the countryside is beyond description. Small woodlots and hedgerows and stone walls. I took my roebuck within sight of the remains of Hulne Abbey on the estate of the Duke of Northumberland. The mini-three are hunted very early and very late in the day, leaving time during the day to enjoy the pubs and castles and abbeys and quaint little villages. Malcolm was a very good host, more than willing to show you these things during the day. And very few hunting places in the world can compare in the history that England has to offer.
