HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
For myself, I am much more interested in spending time with my son, and being in beautiful places, than I am in collecting trophy game. I was looking for a hunt that allowed us to hunt great animals in fantastic country in a spot and stalk fashion (I get pretty bored with sitting in stands, and being from the Midwest, we do a bit of stand hunting during whitetail season). Vancouver Island fulfilled all of our expectations, and our hopes, for a great hunt and a fantastic experience.
Spring came somewhat late this year -- we were actually turned back by snow in the high country one day (and we were hunting the last 5 days of the spring season) -- so our timing was excellent. The bears were emerging from hibernation, and the rut began in earnest the second day we were hunting. The hunting concession encompasses 6000 sq mi of northeast Vancouver Island and the area around Knights Inlet on the mainland.
Glenn is an exceptional steward of the resource, a conservationist in the noblest sense of the word. He worked for forty years in the forestry industry and has a clear vision of true sustainable use of the planet's resources -- both flora and fauna. His concession's harvest quotas for grizzly and elk are regulated by the province but Glenn himself sets quotas for the other species -- he only takes a specified number of black bears each year, even though he could carry more hunters, harvest more animals, and generate more revenue -- he rigorously maintains to preserve the population, and maintain trophy quality.
Vancouver Island is known for its large bears. Indeed, SCI reclassified these black bears in a separate category some years back. Glenn is also passionate about fair chase. BC does not allow baiting and, even if they did, I doubt Glenn would use that technique. His respect for the quarry is such that he chooses to pit himself against the bear's strengths -- its exceptional sense of smell, excellent hearing, and in the old boars, instinctual feeling for danger. My son and I had never hunted black bears before and I confess that I thought they were the Mortimer Snerds of North American big game. Instead what we found were wily animals that turned several of our stalks inside out, that stalked us at times, and that, in general, offered an exhilarating hunt. Glenn offers a spring bear hunt that is tailored to the parent-child party. Up to the age of 12(?), BC allows the child to hunt on one of the parent's tags. Glenn offers these "family" hunts up to the age of 18, either in a 2x1 guide scenario if the child hunts on the parent's tags, or 1x1 if the youngster (older than 12) has her/his own tags. Whilst we were there, a grandfather-grandson pair from Dallas (both fantastic company, true sportsmen, and experienced hunters) shared the lodge with us. That is Glenn's maximum number for hunters at any given time (4 in 6000 sq miles).
It was for this type of hunt that I chose Trophy West -- and the hunt met all expectations. Glenn guided my son and me personally. He spent time educating us about the environment in BC, about the culture of hunting in the area, and about the skills necessary to be successful in pursuit of these bears. He spent time teaching my son woodsmanship -- and was very patient with my incessant questions about the area and the game. When I travel I always hope I will return wiser and more educated. Without question, this trip met that goal. Both my son and I learned a great deal -- and had a great time together and with Glenn. We also made new friends with the other hunters from Dallas -- who I am sure we will see along the road in the future (at DSC, if nowhere else).
To me, the hunt itself is but the secondary reason for the trip but I must share a few recollections about that as well. Much of the time is spent glassing logging areas from elevation; only stalking when a big boar is spotted. We saw at least a dozen bears every day (over 20 on a couple of days). Each day we saw bears that would make great trophies (Glenn's average bear squares at an honest 6'6", and this year several of his hunters took bears over 7'.) and had the chance to stalk many of them. We passed on good shots at so many animals, I have lost count. The blacktail does were fawning while we were there and that source of easy protein was the focus of the bears as they emerged from hibernation. Glenn is an excellent caller and repeatedly called bears into shooting range using fawns bleats -- a truly exciting way to hunt.
In the case of my son's bear, we spotted a large boar about 2 miles away in a meadow surrounded by old growth cedars with salal thickets lining the river that ran nearby. We covered much of that distance along logging roads and stalked into the meadow (through salal so thick nothing could be seen) over the last 500 yards. The sound of the river, running high with snow melt, masked my poor stalking skills. We set up at the edge of the meadow, a boggy area of about 5 acres with some cut over stumps, and quite a number of early second growth conifers. It was much thicker on the ground than it had appeared from high up on the mountainside. When we arrived the bear was nowhere in sight and, since it had taken some time to cover the distance, we were not sure he was still in the area. The wind was good, however, and Glenn set us up on a little rise with cedar behind us to break up our silhouette. That slight elevation gave a pretty good view of the meadow. Glenn positioned himself about 20 feet behind us. My son stood and I sat, steadying the shooting sticks for him.
Glenn blew two bleats on the fawn call and the bear exploded from the thicket along the river's edge about 60 yards to our right. The boar halved the distance between us with such speed that I regretted leaving my own rifle at my left hand. The bear came on at speed. From my seated position I could see the grass and turf kicking into the air as he dug in and accelerated. Less than casually, I hoped that, if he reached us, he made sure to finish me off, because I knew my wife was going to kill me if she found out I had led her son into a hungry bear's charge. At about 30 yds, the boar slammed on the brakes and pulled up where a group of small cedars blocked my view of his torso. Glenn whispered to my son, "Take him." With the first shot, the bear rolled. My son cycled the bolt and fired again as the bear regained his footing and headed back toward the thicket. About 5 yards short of the thick brush, I saw his back legs buckle. He stumbled forward into the salal, and lay still. Both shots had found their marks, passing through heart and lungs and exiting within a inch of each other.

If you want to hunt big black bears this is the place to go. This outfitter is a leader in the hunting industry. I had the hunt of a lifetime. They don't over hunt their area and you just don't hunt for a black bear. They hunt and put you on trophy black bear.
