Problems of Hunt: I left my lunch at the truck the first day out as I was told we would be returning. we ended up being gone all day and the lack of conditioning+the energy level required to maintain good functioning stamina caused me to be worn out that day but the mistake was taken care of on all subsequent days and the terrain caused me no more duress for the rest of the hunt. (no matter what your guide on any hunt says, pack your lunch yourself.)as an archer I did not practice shooting at extreme angles (fifty degrees+) and had five shots go high on animals. it makes a huge difference on distance so be aware of proper techniques such as bend the hips not rotate the shoulders Highlights of Hunt: the bulls were in the roar and we had many shots taken (six). the wow factor of the countryside is so huge that its hard to pick out just a few of the highlights Equipment Recommendations: sun blocker Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes Why? The amount of game I saw makes me feel confident that whether you are after a silver medal stag as I was or a gold medal stag, these guys can put you on an animal of your choosing (not the first one you see is what you get. the other three hunters in camp also tagged out on rifle and to gold medal stags and great fallow deer. the camaraderie in camp makes for a very social setting. there was not any pecking order with all three guides and hunters and guides all helped one another when they could.

I would rebook with Gerald any time I decide to return to NZ for a hunt. My wife was along as an observer but she stayed behind in the house. Sue made sure that there was plenty for her to do also. I am not convinced however that the taxidermy work is of as high a standard as what we have in Alberta. also the taxidermist will cut your horns and insert a steel rod, he says it is for shipping space saving but this process in my opinion is wrong and I want my skull intact. so I had my cape tanned and skull bleached then shipped to my taxidermist so have all your taxidermist info with you.I will see what kind of tanning job gets done and report later on this. most taxidermists will want you to just salt down the cape and ship it to him for tanning. overall I had a great time and you will too.

Extremely friendly and knowledgeable. do yourself get in shape, when you think your in shape your not do twice as much, a lot of climbing and no free rides its either up or down. Drink lots of water and pack your own lunch. I had a blast and would go back with Gerald and Sue no hesitation. One fellow took a 475 maybe 500 stag and two fallow deer. Lots of game to be seen.

Problems of Hunt: first day out we started out from truck and was told we would be returning for lunch at the truck, i had packed water but left the lunch. never assume you are not going to run into game and have to continue away from the vehicle. I ran out of gas by nightfall. second mistake I did was not to practice shooting my bow at extreme angles 50 degrees+ range is critical Highlights of Hunt: I was given six opportunities on good stags, the comaradery amongst fellow hunters and guides, there is so much wow factor with the scenery that its hard to describe. don,t get your taxidermy done there I looked at some mounts and they are ugly they split the hides instead of tubing the cape they also split the horns to save room for shipping, none of this to me is acceptable and they were accomodating in leaving my cape whole and skull intact for me. Just have them salt the hides down good and ship all to your taxidermist.

Problems of Hunt: Was not the most challenging hunt, but not getting an animal would of been devastating. We were lucky to be the first one's into camp so I believe as more hunters arrive that the degree of difficulty increases as the animals start seeing people again. Highlights of Hunt: Traveling to New Zealand is a long costly haul. The animals we were presented were awesome and really what I was looking for. The weather was great and the views awesome. Equipment Recommendations: Make sure your hunting boots are clean going into New Zealand as they could charge $400 to clean them. Gerald & Sue have a fine outfit and work hard to show their clients a good time. The properties Gerald has access to hold healthy populations of free range animals that allow for many opportunities to look them over before making a stalk. Took my wife with me on this hunt. She had a good time relaxing in Wanaka while I went out chasing the animals with Gerald. On our last day Sue took us out flight-seeing in her Cessna 172. That flight was a true highlight for me and my wife during our stay in NZ.

Problems of Hunt: Main camp excellent shape and great food. Spike camp fair shape with good food. A goose cull on the second day of waterfowling spoiled shooting but I wouldn't have traded that show for the best shoot in New Zealand. Fog was a factor on the tahr hunting but we still got it done. Highlights of Hunt: Getting to a place to shoot a tahr and shooting my stag. Shooting a wallaby on the run was also a long term memory. Equipment Recommendations: Rubber boots would have helped. This was a very short notice hunt. I went to New Zealand to watch the world cup cricket when I heard that there was good hunting close by. I check out the internet and found Gerald and Sue website. Problems of Hunt: Only minor, all issues were out of hosts control, my not shooting, the weather, etc. Highlights of Hunt: Tahr was in an isolated station in absolutely spectacular scenery and it was a challenge just to climb to the area (helicopters are available). Handles six people with ease and complete privacy. Nice fireplace and close to Wanaka. Short drive to Queenstown. Short drive to hunting area except the tahr and then a huge "private" area with abundant tahr. Saw 8 or more bulls both days we could see the mountains.

SUMMARY REMARKS

Problems of Hunt: Really none. Wind was always an issue while stalking in mountanous areas. Highlights of Hunt: All the game. Even free range the abundance of well managed game was impressive where I was. Several trophy size animals were seen each day. My smallish fallow buck was the hardest won, but I saw several much larger fallow that were "close". Equipment Recommendations: Shoot your bow as far as comfortable, 50 yds if possible, tracking in the terrain we were in would be difficult. I shot all my animals around 30 yards. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? I was treated very well, the guide was great, the game was great, the lodgings and food were great. Realize that some species meant camping which I did not have to do (tahr and chamios were also available to hunt but I did not this trip).

If I had been after tahr or chamios even better condition would have been good. NOTE that there are areas of good hunting that they have access to that were NOT real difficult as well.

Comments: Several nice red stags were seen each day, stalking conditions were fair to good. Several nice fallow bucks were "heard" if not seen at close range each day, terrain is very thick in many areas of the fallow hunt and stalking was easy until you were within 100 yards, then it was a challenge due to the senses of the deer. Turkeys and pigs were a bonus that did not cost me, though I do not know the costs of such up front.

SUMMARY REMARKS

Problems of Hunt: There were no problems. The outfitter was excellent and really knows his business. Highlights of Hunt: The absolute joy of hunting in New Zealand. This is a "must" trip for the traveling hunter. Equipment Recommendations: You should be very fit to hike the mountains of NZ. They are very steep. Altitude is not an issue. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? This was probably my favorite hunt. Mr. Telford is an archer himself and did an excellent job of closing the distance for a close shot. You will not find in a free range hunt more high quality game to chase. After we were successful with the stag and tahr I did some rabbit and turkey hunting with the bow. Do not scoff at the bunnies. Try and see one at 30 yards and then hit it with an arrow. We had a great time.

This is a hunt to bring your wife. Both Sue and Gerald Telford really knocked themselves out to make sure we had a great time. Sue is a pilot and took my wife flying, introduced her to family and friends, arranged for a horse back riding adventure, took her shopping and more. After the hunt we did some traveling and all I can say is if you have not been to New Zealand, GO! The country, its people and the food are terrific.
