of Hunt: |
None, this hunt went off without a hitch. The outfit is outstanding. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Having my lion ten feet from the ground blind staring in and taking my leopard on the last day in the last hour of the hunt. |
| Equipment

The best binoculars, maybe two pairs so the trackers won't borrow yours. Their eyes see more animals than yours. |

 |
|
I cannot say enough good things about this hunt, from the minute I got off the plane in Dar es Salaam right up until they put me back on 23 days later I was treated like a king. The Masai area I hunted was covered with Boma's that the people lived in. The children are afraid of your camera. The hunting was as good if not better then they claimed.

The Pasanisis run a top-notch operation. Although expensive, this 21-day safari was well worth it. Luis Pedro de Sa e Mello is an excellent hunter of more than 40 years experience all over Africa. He is a true "Old World" gentleman, gracious and genteel in every way, and he is tough as nails besides and a brilliant hunter. Plus, his Maasai trackers are intelligent collaborators and perform superbly their many jobs. I was encouraged by the sight of hundreds of elephants, including many old bulls, during this safari. Many approached, even closely, the 1.6 meter shootable length for ivory, but none was quite big enough. Leopards were everywhere everyday. This is a close to the old-time African experience as it is possible to get. I can't recommend this outfitter highly enough.

|
Quantity of game seen:
Buffalo was fair in Selous but limited in Masailand; lion fair and limited; leopard good and fair; lesser kudu not available in Selous and good in Masailand; greater kudu was poor in both regions; bushbuck was fair and limited; dik-dik not available in Selous and limited in Masailand; eland poor and limited; Grant's gazelle was not available in Selous and fair in Masailand; gerenuk not available or limited respectively; hartebeest was fair in both regions; impala was present in Selous but limited in Masailand; klipspringer not available or poor; fringed eared oryx not available in Selous but good in Masailand; sable was poor or not available; waterbuck and Nyasaland wildebeests were good in Selous but not available in Masailand; and zebra was limited in both areas.
General Comments:
Quality of camps, vehicles and various services was excellent. Quality of professional hunters was excellent. Arrival in Dar es Salaam was well organized and charter flights to/from camps were excellent. Outfitter charges for all drinks including bottled water, soft drinks, beer, wine etc. and this is annoying for a safari of this cost. Amount of game seen in the Selous was somewhat disappointing but this may be different later in season. Amount of game in Masailand is insufficient for hunting in most cases. Cost of safari appears to be excessive in view of the game seen and taken.

To: The Hunting Report From: Eric Pasanisi of Tanganyika Wildlife Safari Re: Mr. Vincent W. Shiel's Tanzania Safari Date: October 7, 1999
Following the report of Mr. Shiel, I'm very surprised.
Mr. Shiel hunted in two different areas (South Selous and Luhaniandu River and in Masailand, in the area of Kiwai).
It is true that in Masailand you see much less game than in Selous, but you go in this area mainly to shoot lion, leopard, lesser kudu, gerenuk, oryx.
The only thing I could really tell to the hunters who are reading your news concerning Tanzania is that the area is very good. I could give you also some names, as Thorton, Paul and Renee Snider well known in the big game hunting and have hunted several times in these areas and always had very successful safaris.
Personally, I spent two days hunting with Mr. Shiel and his wife, and I have nothing bad to remember except some good times.
It is true also that Mr. Shiel spent five days in the camp because his back made him suffer due to the effort made to carry a heavy bag, but this did not prevent him to shoot a good leopard and a very good lion.
I also talked to the Professional Hunters, Nicolas Negre and Matthieu Laboureur. Both told me how good were their relationships with Mr. Shiel and his family during the safari.
Once again, I'm very surprised about this complaint because the only thing I could say is the following:
I wish to hunt again with Mr. Vincent Shiel. He is a great hunter.
