Absolutely no problems. There was a storm during our stay which knocked out the power for a short time. Instead of being a negative, they arranged a beautiful candle-lit dinner for my wife and I and the food was incredible. |

of Hunt: |
There were many, including taking a very spirited lion after a great deal of walking and glassing. Peter and Ling are such nice people and our similar sense of humor made for a very enjoyable trip. Candle-lit dinner, butcher the caracal-treeing/tracking dog, celebrating 20 years of marriage with just my wife as a hunting partner (and some perfect shooting on her part I might add!), sushi by candle light, eland steaks over an open fire, native dancers/singers and wonderful, hard-working people all the way around. |

|
|
Tam Safaris has very large hunting areas compared to most South African outfitters. Their game is bountiful and very wild. The terrain is very diverse, including mountains, rough rock country, beautiful grasslands and flowing streams. There is a wide variety of species available in that area, including many of the small antelopes. I can recommend them without hesitation and I am confident you will enjoy your experience. I can't think of a single negative aspect of this trip.

Seeing my daughter take a large lioness and my son taking a kudu at 380 yards during their first trip to Africa; also completing my Big Five with a thrilling rhino dart hunt. |

Was easier renting rifles from outfitter than worrying about transporting them. We also hired a videographer to record the trip, which was well worth the expenese. |

I highly recommend this outfitter. We stayed in one camp for three days and four days in another. The facilities, food, and service were first rate. My adult son and daughter, as well as myself, were made to feel part to the family. They cater to families, and even brought in authentic African entertainment to help us celebrate my daughter's taking of a lion and my completion of my Big 5 through the rhino darting hunt. The PH's (father Irvin and sons Stephen and Peter) provided expert guidance and great companionship throughout the week. The trackers, skinners, and camp staff did a great job. The lion hunt was the real deal, with three days of hunting and stalking brought to an exciting climax with my daughter successfully taking an 80 yard shot. I highly recommend the rhino "green" hunt, which was a hair raising all day affair with several unsuccessful stalks before we got into the requisite 30 yard range for the dart rifle. The properties are large, the game is plentiful but challenging, and we loved the African decor that adorned the facilities, as well as the great meals. And most of all, our hosts couldn't have been more gracious and hospitable.

This was quite a long Safari, 23 days, as my 16 year old son and I moved up our arrival date to get into South Africa before the June 1st rule change on lion hunting. With all the press and negative reports on canned hunting in South Africa we were of course somewhat concerned before the trip. We talked with Irvin and Peter Tam extensively before we booked the lion hunt with them. They assured us that we would be hunting free-ranging lions and that they were the only ranch to date in South Africa to have been given a clean bill of health by the government with regard to their operation and the new regulations. We found that everything they told us rang true. The lion ranch was 6000 hectares (15000 acres) with sparse bush, rocky hills and numerous species of game. You had to hunt very hard to find the lions by glassing from the high vantage points and then stalking to within shooting range. We saw a couple of young animals the first day but after 8 hours of hunting it was obvious that this was not a canned hunt for a tame predator. We caught two large males out on the plains stalking a herd of black wildebeast at dawn the next morning and were lucky enough to harvest one. I would definately reccomend this hunt to anyone looking for a high quality lion, I think that no matter what your prior hunting experience is you will be pleased with this operation. The lion we harvested had been free ranging in excess of 8 months catching his own food and was very leary of vehicles and people on foot. With the lions out of the way we moved on to the Rhinos and plains game. My son and I both darted what will probably be Gold Medal rhinos after several exciting stalks to within 30 yards. Since we had a little extra time on our hands we had the luxury of being able to travel to specific ranches for exceptional specimans of some animals. We took two nice Cape Bushbuck on a farm close to the coast near the town of Kenton-on-Sea. We also spent a couple days hunting the area for Blue Duiker. The first day we hunted with trackers beating the bush in a game drive and the second day we hunted with dogs. After the dogs arrived we pretty quickly got a shot at one with a shotgun but he was hit well back and after 3 hours of tracking we could not make a recovery. I would reccomend that anyone wanting to hunt one these little guys hire a dog pack as it is reasonable ($120 day) and seems to work a lot better than just beaters. My son wanted to try for a Springbok slam so Peter called his good friend Julian Theron at Jules of the Karoo Safaris. Julian has a very large ranch south of Kimberly and is known in South Africa simply as "The Springbok Man". We were able to haverest all four colors of Springbok (Common, White, Black and Copper) with the Copper and the Common both maesuring wet as top 10 candidates. Anyone looking for exceptional Springbok should definately check this place out. By the end of the trip my son and I had harvested some 36 animals of 25 different species on 7 different ranches making for a very memorable South African experience. My son who is a die hard rifle hunter was introduced to bow and black powder hunting by the Tams and unexpectedly havested animals with both. Tam Safaris is a family run operation owned by Irvin and Therse Tam and their two sons Peter and Stephan. They took my son and I in and treated us like family. They catered to our every need and provided way over the top service. I can't say enough about the quality of the operation, the PH's and the facilities. This would be a perfect place to take a non-hunting spouse, just don't try to covince her you are roughing it in Africa after a hunt here.

I have never hunted with a nicer family. They took us in and treated us like family. They threw a special birthday party for my wife's 40th, had my boys go to a day of school with their nephews who were the same age, took them to their nieces birthday party, treated my wife to a day at the spa, lined up hotels in Port Elizabeth and chaperoned us there to dining, playing on the beach and swimming in the Indian Ocean. My boys didn't want to leave and my non-hunting wife said it was our best family vacation ever. Now let's get the main reason of the trip, the hunting. We lost all of our camera equipment but the Tams gave us a good camera to use for the week and videoed all of our hunts. They offer hunting for every experience and physical ability level. The area is awesome with animals everywhere. My Lion and Rhinoceros hunts were the most exciting I have ever done and the vehicles, PH's, staff, tracking ability and accommodation were way over the top. I can't say enough about the Tam family and Tam Safaris. We are already planning another trip in 2009.

This was an unusual series of dangerous game long bow hunts. They were prompted by proposed SA Regulations banning darted hunts and long bow hunts for dangerous game. The idea was hopefully to document what properly supervised and run a) long bow darted conservation hunts (bull elephant, cheetah, and rhino) and long bow hunts for dangerous game could be like. Very challenging for outfitter to organize and PH to execute. But both performed beyond expectations. Lion/lioness hunt was not "canned" but done on free roaming lions. |

Both live hunts for lion/lioness and dart hunts for elephant/rhino were true close quarter hunting experiences. The lioness was much, much harder to hunt that a free roaming lion comfortable on its range. The darted hunt for 55lb bull elephant and rhino allowed the use of light long bow equipment, which was a thrill and a joy. Something special about bringing down such huge and mighty animals which such light gear (actually gives a slight feel of the ancient hunters who used darted arrows for big game). Cheetah hunt was an emergency rescue when a cheetah wandered into a lion reserve - exciting in its own way because of the urgency. The lions had to be kept at bay while the cheetah was hunted and darted. |

If using a long bow, there is a considerable amount of planning and practice needed. More planning is needed for using a long bow dart. For lion/lioness hunt, draw weight of long bow was 65+ lbs. For long bow dart is was only around 45lbs (and thus was a real dream to shoot). |

Stalking to within 20 yards of rhino with only a dart gun was fantastic. Irvin Tam provided many extras without charge. He is the most generous outfitter with whom I have hunted. There were two couples on this trip. After my friend took his lion and we both took a lioness, we had a celebration at his lodge. We were presented with 8 X 10 pictures of our lions and a bottle of wine with our picture on the label. He arranged for local dancers to come to the lodge and perform. |
