Dande North is a beautiful and scenic area with lots of buffalo. The camps and staff were all top rate. Swianson's is a first class operator. The PH, Kevin du Boil, is an ethical and energetic PH who likes to hunt buffalo on foot. No "diesel stalking" with this guy. You will earn your buffalo with Kevin as PH. Kevin is very entertaining and gifted story tellerr. We also hunted Lemco for three days and took girafe, 2 zebra and bushpig. It was a pleasure to deal with Graham Hingeston at HHK and eveything was well conducted.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
From what I understand the Zambezi Valley concessions of Sapi and Chewore North and South have not changed since the 1960's. When hunting these areas one seldom runs into another hunter and never did I see any locals walking around the area, it is totally remote. The dangerous game is prolific and tracks of hyena and leopard were found in camp several mornings, To sit around your campfire and listen to lions roar in the distance at night is an indescribable pleasure. Afternoon cruises on the Zambezzi River were not lacking in the adrenaline department either. You have not lived until you have swerved around a Hippopotamus headed for the water and your boat is in it's path. On these river excursions you will see Crocodiles, Hippopotomus, Elephants, Cape Buffalo, and Lions to name but a few. Spots is there, but you probably will not see him. I will definitely hunt this area again in the near future. Until that time comes I will think of it daily if not hourly and I will savour every minute when I get there. Africa for me, is like a monkey on the back, for I am truly addicted and I can not seem to shake the desire.

Why? The Zambezi Valley is really unsoiled Africa. Sapi is a great concession and Chifuti Safaris is a superb operation.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
With all the concern on Zimbabwe today here are my observations. I flew into Harrare passed through customs without a hitch and jumped on my charter flight. Everything went smoothly. Sapi Concession is a wonderful area. On the western boundary is Mana Pools National Park. On the eastern boundary is Cherwore North and Cherwore South concessions. Thus is created a very large unsoiled area of African wilderness. There are no villages or permanent human habitation in this area. The area has a lot of jess, thick riverine bush and mopane forest. All of this makes for a great game area. Chifuti Safaris is a first rate operation. All aspects of the operation get high praise. Paul Smith the PH was great, the entire staff cordial, professional and accomodating. All equipment top notch. I did spend one night in Harrare before before departing. The gas shortage I notice in 2000 when I was last in Zimbabwe did not seem to be an issue. Gas is available although it figures out to be about $2.25 per gallon. The land acquisition by the "war vetrens" is a said fact of life and has affected many of the white farmers and will ultimately affect them all. As viewed from the charter plane a lot of farms don't seem to be producing much in the way of crops. I did see an interesting and very upscale residential development: a gated community around a golf course. There are approximately 400 homesites and about 200 homes built or under construction. The homes were impressive many 7000 plus square feet. The "neighborhood" seems to be made up of high ranking government officals, diplomats and sucessful whites. The adjoining shopping center had plenty of goods although inflation has definitely impacted the country. Overall, would I want Zimbabwe again? You bet, in a heart beat!! However, it would be on a government concession but not on a ranch. In fact I am starting my elephant tusker hunt fund now. Hopefully, this report is helpful and may be of interest to fellow subscribers.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I have just returned two days ago from a successful wet season elephant hunt in Zimbabwe and wanted to pass along to your subscribers a first hand account of my safari experience. I was fortunate enough to take a 50 lb. elephant hunting in Dande East with Andrew Dawson of Chifuti Safaris.

I have been on five safaris to Zimbabwe dating back to 1997. All previous safaris to Zimbabwe have taken place in the Zambezi Valley and I have been successful in taking 3 buffalo, 2 leopard, hippo, crocodile and numerous plains game species in addition to the elephant taken on this safari. Therefore, I feel that I am somewhat qualified to speak on the current situation in Zimbabwe.

I have read and continue to read media reports that describe the situation in Zimbabwe as a potentially unsafe situation for the sport hunting tourist. This is unfortunate and if I can be frank, I simply do not see it that way. During my time in Zimbabwe over the past five safaris, I have not only spent time in the bush, but also spent many days in Harare as well as on commercial farms. I have not once ever felt threatened or unsafe. In fact, I have spent a lot of time in these areas since the farm invasions began four years ago. I believe that it is far safer to be in most parts of Zimbabwe than in many parts of the city in which I live, Dallas, Texas.

On this past safari, from my arrival at Harare airport on March 24, to my time on safari in the bush, two days in Harare, three days on a commercial farm in Headlands, to my departure on April 8, I felt as safe and comfortable as on any previous safari. Actually, I was able to see much more of the country on this trip than on previous safaris due to the fact that poor weather conditions forced us to drive to the camp as opposed to taking an air charter.

The only negative that I can see is the effect the farm takeovers have had on the economy and on game ranching, there by reducing hunting opportunities on private land. During my time on this safari, I saw numerous commercial farms (once productive) that are sitting idle. This country, once the breadbasket of Africa, is simply not producing the necessary crops to feed not only its people, but also to generate the exports necessary to produce much needed foreign currency. In addition, fuel shortages were evident as many gas stations either had no fuel for sale or had long lines at the pump. Fortunately, neither of these situations had any effect on my safari. My safari operator, like most of the good operators, had previously stock piled fuel for this safari season.

I applaud the Hunting Reports position on sport hunting in Zimbabwe. I agree with the position you have taken over the past 2 years "namely, we are not worried about the overall security situation in Zimbabwe". The problems in Zimbabwe are political and have no bearing on the sport hunting client going to the big game areas such as the Zambezi Valley. African politics are never pretty, but they are a reality for the average citizen of Zimbabwe. My advice to a hunter considering Zimbabwe is to go and enjoy this wonderful country. Don't wait, as the magic of a real African safari may not last forever.
