SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: Too short.
Highlights of Hunt: Being with my son, making a 325 yard shot on a great sheep. Also, getting an aoudad over 30 inches (31 1/2). Tremendous trophy.
Equipment Recommendations: Best binoculars you can afford. Mechanix gloves.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? Tremendous chance to sheep hunt at a price that is small compared to other sheep hunts. My second father/son hunt with Bubba, and both were great. I have been Dall sheep hunting twice, and the convenience and difficulty make it a real winner. Also, Bubba's euthusiasm for hunting.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I few years ago (1999), I wrote you about a hunt I took with a friend for Aoudad with Bubba Glosson of Southwestern Trophy Hunts. At the conclusion of the hunt, I told Bubba that I really wanted to bring my son Matt along on this hunt when there was time and he was old enough. Matt's schedule was filled up with year round swimming and water polo. I kept in contact over the years and a couple of times we were close to making it happen, but it just never quite made it. This January, seven years later, we were able to finally make it. I am a little older and "larger", but I must say Bubba has aged with grace. He is still an energetic personality that just plain loves to hunt. We arrived on Tuesday to reunite for this hunt and met Donald (one of the guides) and Ryan (Bubba's son). We had a great time sitting around and reliving the last time that we hunted together. That night after dinner, we sat around and played poker for the honor of being champ. It was the next morning when the real fun began.

Pre-scouting had been done and they had located several groups of sheep, but the weather had changed and the rams decided to disappear. The first two days we spotted, walked and climbed over several large ranches that Glosson has leased in that area. I would guess that he has almost 100,000 acres leased for hunting aoudad. During that time, we saw hundred ewes, but no rams. It was indeed a mystery. By this time, Matt was looking to harvest just about any animal that he saw, but Bubba's policy is to try to harvest mature sheep over ten years old. Matt's frustration was caused because we were seeing Aoudad, just no rams. This was also unlike the stand hunting in Texas for whitetail that he had done. This is a totally different type of hunting that requires patience to sit and glass for sometimes hours on end. It also frustrated him that he couldn't wait to kill a ram bigger than the one I had taken last time. It was just a shade under 30 inches.

The next to the last day heading in, we saw a group of rams as we were heading back to camp. We put the spotting scope on them and found that there were a couple of rams that would probably got about 27-28 inches. Not the trophy that Matt had originally wanted, but by this time good enough. We put that group to bed with a plan to head out the next morning and see if he couldn't get his first aoudad. That morning began with us spotting the sheep on the mountain. I stayed below with Donald, as Bubba, Ryan and Matt started the climb. I thought that with fewer people the hunters would be less likely to be spotted, so Donald and I stayed on the ground. We watched all the action through the spotting scope as they made their climb and stalk towards the sheep. They had moved into perfect position when the thermals changed and they were winded by the sheep. It was at that time that Matt made the decision that he wanted to "go after these guys" even though we had planned on leaving that afternoon.

They found, lost and found these sheep, but were never able to get a good shot. Then about 12:30, Bubba called on the radio and told us that Matt had experienced the high and lows of sheep hunting. They had lost this group and were going to hunt their way back to camp. His voice told me he wasn't very optimistic about their chances for taking a sheep. Than at 2:00 another call came on the radio. There was no mistaking the excitement in Bubba's voice. They had come across a group of rams and Matt had harvested one with one shot. The three of them were so excited. Pictures were taken and the long walk back to camp didn't seem quite so long. As Donald and I saw them approaching camp, you could see the big grin on Matt's (and Bubba's) face. The sheep he shot was 27 inch ram that was 10 ½ years old. It was not as big as Matt was originally looking for, but he now knew what a trophy was. The hard work it took to take this animal made it a "true" trophy.

I was happy to finally get Matt on a trip I had wanted to bring him on for many years. He understands a little better now that a trophy is not measured in inches, but the work that is put into harvesting it. He now wants to go every year and Bubba says that I have a sheep hunter on my hands. I want to thank Bubba Glosson for the quality of hunt he runs. His excitement can't help but rub off on the hunters. It is also special that his son was with him helping my son take a sheep. I have been on two Dall sheep hunts, and I can tell you that this is a great hunt for an inexpensive cost when you compare it to any other type of sheep hunting. See you next year, Bubba.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Reading the February 1999 issue of The Hunting Report, I was intrigued by your article on aoudad hunting in Texas. Living in Houston, I thought that this would be an opportunity to slip off for an off-season hunt. I called Bubba Glosson at Southwestern Trophy Hunts and discussed dates and details with him.

It took us a while to match his schedule with mine and that of my hunting companions, but finally we did. I am very happy that we were able to get this done. We spent a very enjoyable five days together. Every morning we were greeted with a warm fire in our home-away-from-home, breakfast would be served, and then off hunting we went. Bubba has been hunting this property for 18 years and knows the land and the sheep like the back of his hand. We were on sheep early every day, and then the fun would begin - checking wind, hiding behind bushes and trees and crawling in cactus. This may not sound like fun, but indeed it was.

This is a challenging hunt, that may not be as physical as a backpacking sheep hunt in Alaska (which I took last year), but which takes place in 4,500- to 5,800-foot elevations and will thus give the hunter a workout. My friend and I took two great aoudads, and Glosson handled them beautifully in preparation for mounting. He truly enjoys hunting, and you can tell that by the way he conducts his hunts.
