I have just returned from a very memorable hunt with Eugene Yap of South Point Safaris on the big island of Hawaii. Besides taking a very beautiful and large Mouflon ram with him, I was able to enjoy a very scenic wilderness area. There are valleys and meadows, green rolling hills, beautiful mountain scenery and great forests. Mr. Yap also made superb arrangements for my wife and I both before and after the hunt. The weather was beautiful not being real hot or cold. His equipment and accommodations are of the best, the food was excellent and he certainly is a very professional hunter and guide. The care of the trophy after being successful was some of the best I've seen and the trophy will be life size mounted. A very gorgeous sheep.
There are some 6,000 Mouflons on this mountain and game density seems to be heavy enough to remind me of several African safaris. There are very ample amounts also of Rio Grande Turkeys, however the season was not open during my stay. We also observed many Armenian Mouflon and they are available at a modest price. The only hunters that you see are hunting with Mr. Yap and the area covers 189,000 acres. The sheep are all purebred and free ranging.
As these are probably some of the only free ranging, purebred Mouflon sheep left in the world, I cannot understand why with the current situation, the hunting community is being so quiet. We all know what the Nature Conservancy has as an ultimate goal, and as the property is now for sale, with them being the only buyer at the time, should they prevail in this matter, this herd will be decimated. Has not the hunting community a buyer or is not anyone interested in transplanting these wonderful sheep? If not, whey are we as hunters allowing the possible destruction of such a unique animal and the enjoyment of such a beautiful area to be lost.
I would whole-heartedly recommend that you hunt with Mr. Yap to see for yourself what a wonderful experience it is.

Note: Hunter also took a Vancouver bull which are abundant in this area. Fantastic hunt for boar with dogs and knife! Vancouver bull down with one swift from my 395 HH. Beautiful scenery! Great facilities. Real hunting fair chase. Every time I hunt with Gene I can't wait to go again! |

This hunt was arranged after reading (Dateline: Hawaii) by Bob Duerr in the January "Hunting Report."
One "big" note of concern for any one wanting to hunt in Hawaii: If you have not previously hunted there, it is "manadatory" that you have a hunter education/safety certificate. If you have one from any state or province you can get an exemption, but it needs to be done in advance. No certificate, no hunt, no exceptions! No matter who or how old you are. This is the most important note you can pass along.
In correspondence with Eugene Ramos on the Big Island he refers to his sheep as Corsican/feral--not mouflon. Pictures in his flyer support this. His $500 is a per day fee.
Thanks to "The Hunting Report" my wife got her trip to Hawaii and I my axis hunt.
