ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
This was my second hunt with Marcelo Sodirs of South America Adventure Safaris. The first time I hunted with him was to finish out my diamond level of big game animals of South America. I accomplished this with great record book trophies. This hunt was to fullfill my quest for wing shooting. It was even better than I expected. Along with my friend, Ralph Wahlberg and two great gentlemen from Texas, I had an absolutely great time and lots of fun.

We shot doves, ducks, pigeons, perdiz and lors, "parakeets". Ralph and I shot 2 to 3 times more than we expected, with bird counts in big numbers.

I also want to mention that there was a big game hunter finishing up his quest for the diamond level of SCI. He had all the trophies he needed with a huge water buffalo and red deer, that we saw in the skinning shed. Marcello runs a "5" star operation. I definitely recommend a trip to Argentina to hunt with Marcelo.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL

July 2008

Rex Baker and I traveled to Peru to hunt South American whitetail deer with Marcelo Sodiro of South American Adventure Safaris. Marcelo conducted the first hunt for this species for foreign hunters last year with Larry Rudolph as his first client. The hunt was successful, and Larry had a great experience, and highly recommended the hunt. Several other hunters besides Rex and I booked for 2008, but due to late rains in April through June, the early hunts had to be cancelled due to flooding which made access to the hunting areas impossible. When things dried out sufficiently, they reinstated the hunts, and Rex and I were the second hunting party to go there in mid-July 2008. Marcelo hosted one other American the week prior to our arrival on a very successful hunt, so our hopes were high for our chances to experience the same.

The three scheduled hunting days had us wondering if this would be sufficient, but the reports from Larry and the hunter before us alleviated our fears. They assured us that there were plenty of deer there and we found this to be, if anything, an understatement. We quickly found the lodge to be comfortable, and food good and the people friendly and knowledgeable about the area and the game. Hunting is done mostly by riding mules on the myriad trails cut throughout the area. This affords a reasonable view into the head-high vegetation, but even so, spotting these tiny deer in this thick cover is difficult. I belive we only saw a small percentage of the deer inhabiting this region, and even when a buck was spotted, getting in position for a shot was not always possible. We were impressed...more bucks than does. Not usual.

Hunting is done mostly early in the morning and later in the afternoon, and it is usually to spot 20 or more deer during each session. Most of the bucks are young, with spikes and forkhorns being the norm, and anything with six or more points is considered a trophy. These are small bodied deer, ranging from 75 to 105 pounds live weight. They look similar to our North American whitetails, except for their diminutive bodies, and the size of their tails. Of the three tails I measured, they averaged eight inches in lenth, one and one half inches wide relaxed and only three inches wide when alert and extended. This is approximately one half of the size of their northern cousins.

Regarding trophy expectations, we were told to hunt for a mature buck with at least three points to a side. We inspected the mounted heads in the lodge, which had been killed over the years by the owners of the area. There were examples of not only average bucks that we could expect, but also of the largest that had ever been taken on the property. The largest sported eight points and had an SCI score of 83. Rex and I killed bucks that were mature, probably four to five years old, with six point racks that scored around 46 points SCI. The body on my buck was quite large for the species, with a live weight of 106 pounds, approaching the heaviest that had ever been taken of 114.

Not only were Rex and I fascinated by this unique and interesting experience, but so was Marcelo. He has hunted extensively throughout South America, and is very knowledgeable about the various whitetail species there. He told us that the ones found in the high mountains are much larger in body size, up to twice as big, but also grow small antlers. It would be interesting to know if they also had small tails like the ones we hunted. We discussed the idea of possibly having SCI categorize the ones we hunted as the South American coastal whitetail deer, which would differentiate them for listing purposes from their larger mountain cousins. These small deer where we hunted are found between 2,500 and 4,100 feet above sea level, whereas the larger species is found in terrain up to and even exceeding 10,000 feet.

As stated, the majority of hunting is done from mules, but another successful technique proved to be slowly walking along the wide river bottoms. These are mostly dry with scattered water holes, where the deer visit in the mornings and evenings to drink. These deer are not overly spooky, and often we were able to approach within 75 yards of them. Even when they saw us, as long as we remained motionless, they would quickly go back to feeding or drinking. This usually afforded adequate time for a good shot. On the mules, however, due to the noise they make while walking, the deer tended to spook more readily, and by the time you got off the mule for a shot, they were in the thick brush where a shot opportunity was not possible.

Most shots tended to be between 75-200 yards, but when a shooter is spotted across a valley from one peak to another, longer shots might also be necessary. Due to the hassles and paperwork invovled in traveling with firearms to Peru, Rex and I rented guns from Marcelo. He had several good quality guns to choose from, in .270, .30-06 and .308 calibre, equipped with good variable power scopes. To enter Peru, you do need a visa prior to arrival, and Marcelo takes care of obtaining your hunting license.

The camp is comfortable and the food quite good. Nights are pleasantly cool, in the 40s and 50s, but mid-days are hot, from the 80s to even higher at times. During the three days of hunting, we both had numerous opportunities at shooter-class bucks, and took representative examples of the species. We both greatly enjoyed the hunt, and were impressed by the flawless preparation Marcelo did to make everything come together perfectly. I would highly recommend this hunt to any adventurous hunter looking for a fun adventure to a place not commonly considered as a hunting destination for a unique whitetail deer species. As Marcelo conducts more of these highly enjoyable trips, I believe Peru will become more popular to the traveling sportsman, not only for big game, but also for the fabulous offshore fishing which we were told exists here.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt:
Highlights of Hunt: My wife was able to travel with me. First time dove shooting and it was all I could imagine. Excellent Beretta 391 20 ga. Capybara, spot and stalk. Buffalo spot and stalk, fabulous axis deer even with about 17 inches missing beam (would have been top 5 SCI) still should come in 11 or 12. Dog hunting for peccary was fast and furious when it happened.
Equipment Recommendations: For doves, quality leather gloves and hearing protection, shoulder pads if shooting 12 ga. Not really needed for 20 ga., but I took one and used it. Warmish in April, but could be cool in the AM.

Game Condition Comments: Game condition is excellent, there is a tremendous amount of feed. Game habitat is excellent, free open meadows and sparce woodlands to impenetrable forest. There were a couple of other hunters in camp who also took outstanding animals. Most animals are free range, and the hunting concessions are huge. I would liken the habitat to a combination of African plains and jungle.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt:
Highlights of Hunt: Capybara hunting is under rated. When using dogs, the hunt is very exciting in close quarters, anything can happen. The puma are in beautiful condition and I was quite impressed by the size and abundance of these cats. They have alot to eat in the way of other game.White lipped peccary was hunted with 1 dog in a very dense forest also a very exciting experience. Brown brocket deer is a very challenging species as they are small and mostly nocturnal, definitely a worthwhile trophy. The water buffalo were larger than I expected and comparable to Cape buffalo, very impressive animals. I could not believe the size of the black buck, The one I shot should go top ten with a number in the same class and at least one or two much larger. They were comparable to hunting our pronghorn antelope, a good flat shooting rifle is recommended this one.
Equipment Recommendations: Close range small caliber w/ open sights for Capibara, peccary's and puma. Scoped flat shooting for deer species, large caliber for buffalo. The outfitter also has a selection of well maintained well sighted rifles for all conditions. Plenty of effective mosquito repelent.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? Absolutely. Marcelo operates a well oiled machine. I do not believe I have ever hunted anywhere, where the hunting for multiple species was so well organized. The game was constantly being scouted even when you were hunting one species someone was else where scouting other species for you. The Guide Ricardo always had a plan when you hooked up with him in the morning. No head scratching, no loss for where or how to find the quarry. They exceeded my expectations on all levels, a truely professional organization.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
The camp bulidings are new or recently built. The rooms and cabins are nicely furnished and very comfortable. This is a camp where you could take your wife and children. The cabins are ideally suited for families or small groups. The food is excellent as well as the Argentine wine. The roads in the hunt areas are well maintained with exception of the occasional detour. The camp staff is very efficient and polite. The trophy preparation is as good as it gets with little room for improvement. Mosquitos can be heavy in some areas depending on habitat being hunted but they were no problem in the area of the camp. There is a fair amount of hunting on foot and quiet gear should be worn! You are greeted in Buenos Aires by Alec and his wife who assist you with all transfers tours etc. The remarkable thing about this organization is they are always one step ahead of you. Marcelo is an accomplished international hunter and seems to know exactly what the international hunter needs and expects. Its not very often that I can say a hunting trip went this well, but Marcelo and his staff seem to turn out consistent results thru organization, good staff, and good hunting areas. There were also a number of wing shooters in camp that were repeats, that shared their overwhelming satisifaction.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
To accomplish the Diamond Level of Trophy Animals of South America, I needed to make another trip back to that country. I needed only three animals to complete this level. My choices were the native collard peccary, white lipped peccary and capybara. My wife's comment was "you are going all that way for two pigs and a big rat"?

After talking to and making many inquiries about the outfitters in Argentina, I selected South American Adventures Safaris by Sodiro and Sodiro. A hunting company started in 1988 by Jose Sodiro. Now Marcelo Sodiro has taken over and expanded from big game hunting to combine wing shooting for dove, pigeons and duck with big game. Tommy Morrison of Sporting International Inc., 15608 South Bentwood, Channelview, Texas, 77530-4018, Phone: 281-452-6223 took care of booking the hunt and making air and hotel arrangements.

After being in the field with Marcelo and Ricardo for a day, I knew my choice was the best. I rate the outfitter Marcelo, his hunting operation and lodge 5 star!

Marcelo was my guide for the collard peccary, white lipped peccary and capybara. Hunting with Marcelo gave us both a chance to get acquainted. It gave me a chance to find out that he is the best Argentina can offer as a real quality person and professional guide. I had previously taken a trip to South America in Spring 1995 for 21 days. I took a total of 14 animals and eight different species toward the Trophy Animals of South America. It was a good and interesting trip, but did not compare to the quality of my recent trip with Marcelo.

The area Marcelo took me to for the capybara was a small river, about a one-hour drive North of the lodge. The small river was teaming with bird life along the banks and in the trees. Everywhere you looked there were birds that varied in size from small duck to stork size. The river also contained numbers of camian, which also added interest to the hunt.

We encountered approximately 22 capybaras in the afternoon and evening. We found a huge female, approximately 165 pounds, which I shot with a 12-gauge shotgun. I mention the shotgun because it is reflex shooting. If the capybara hear you or see you they are off and into the river. There is very little time to shoot!

The last day of my hunt, Ricardo and I went out looking for the blackbuck we had seen three days before. After getting a better look at him he was a fine buck, so I added him to my collection making a total of four trophies for this trip.

Another interesting thing that happened on this trip were the fish that jumped into your boat. They were anywhere from one pound to a four pounder that hit me in the middle of the chest as he came into the boat. That will definitely get your attention!

All in all this was a hunt and trip I thoroughly enjoyed. Things went probably better than could be expected. I definitely would recommend taking time to do a capybara hunt with Marcelo.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Attached is my Hunting Trip Report Form filled out however it doesn't do justice to the hunt. I have hunted a lot of places but his was one of the very best.

When at SCI last year I was at your booth and started talking with Jim McCarthy, this was the first time I had met him and he explained that he was an agent. I told him that I wanted to go to Argentina for a hunting trip and he took me just a few feet away and introduced me to Marcelo Sodiro. I talked to Marcelo a few minutes and booked the hunt.

When I arrived in Buenos Aires, I was met by Marcelo's agent Alex Kostovetsky in the baggage area. Alex immediately took over, he cleared my rifles with customs and out the door in five minutes. I had a five hour lay over before leaving for the hunting area near Santa Fe. We went sightseeing and shopping and then back to the airport for my flight.

Marcelo met me in the airport in Santa Fe and we were off to his ranch. The ranch has a brand new (maybe 1 or 1 1/2 years old) hunting lodge that is great. My room had a private bath and was very nice.

I hunted for two weeks, saw lots of animals and took some great trophies. I have the new number one SCI Mouflon, number three red stag, and number six buffalo. Three top tens, how great is that ? In addition, I saw other stags that were great as well.

When not hunting big game we were bird hunting. At no extra charge they took me pigeon, dove and duck hunting in some of the best areas you will ever see.

The handling of the trophies was excellent. The staff was outstanding. The food to die for. All in all a great hunt and a great time.

Thanks for doing a great job and be sure to put my report in the file for South American Adventures Safaris and Marcelo Sodiro.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
From the start, Marcelo and his wife, Clauria Sodiro of South American Adventure Safaris, took care of everything and ran a first class operation. They were constantly in contact with us by e-mail to handle any problems and answer all of our questions. Their liaison in Buenos Aires, Alex, was on time and at our beck and call. He arranged tours including a tango show and recommended good restaurants and fine wine for the week we spent there. Our hotel and transport to and from the domestic and international airport was arranged through South African Adventure Safaris.

We were picked up in Santa Fe by a professional driver and delivered to the hunting lodge two-and-a-half hours away. The lodge is only two years old and is very nice. The food was exceptional with three courses and wine with lunch and dinner. Entrees included lots of great beef and wild game.

Best of all was the free-range bow hunting for water buffalo and gray-brown brocket. We stalked the buffalo every day and saw enough brocket to make it interesting. The buffalo trophy was expertly cared for and the facilities for doing so are first class. Our trip back to Buenos Aires was as trouble free as getting there.

I would enthusiastically recommend their operation to all SCI members.
