HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
I had hunted Desert sheep with Solimar Hunting Club under the superb leadership of Ernesto Zaragoza, Sr. from Guaymas, Sonora Mexico a few years ago. During that time, I completed my grand slam (#1510), and harvested one very nice mule deer buck. After returning home, Ernesto called to see how I was doing and if the trophies all got back to the USA in good order. It was then I requested a return trip to hunt Mule and Coues deer with him in 2012.
As the dates approached everyone close to me were reading the headlines and fearful of the drug war on the border and surrounding areas. The Mexican President was about to place 4000 Federal troops on the border. Not too many travelers were venturing into the Mexican states to hunt or vacation. Ernesto assured me that he would take good care of me and make the necessary arrangements for my safety. He did just that and much more. After I arrived in camp, he informed me that he had purchased a special permit for me with the Seri Indian Tribe on their reservation for a trophy Mule Deer. I would have the same guide, Ramon that I had on my sheep hunt, which delighted me even more.
The accommodations, chef, helpers, skinners, trackers, drivers, and guides were great. The camp was spotless. Hot showers, great food and Chilean wines again spoiled us daily. The beds were made daily and clothes dried in the sun. Nearby fruit trees bore fresh lemons and oranges for the taking. A plentiful bar was handy for sundowners. A huge fire ring made for warmth and camaraderie at the end of each day.
I learned that Ernesto and his sons had sold the ranch and this would be his last season here hunting sheep and deer after eighteen years. After all Ernesto is now eighty years young. It was heartbreaking to see the sadness in his eyes as he spoke of the great hunters such as Jack OConner, Craig Boddington, and far more and too many to count had graced his camps with many repeat performances in the past. He was once a free diver and outfitter for over a million acres of the Sonora Desert. They will keep the Dove and Duck hunts open and market them. He did say perhaps they would investigate buying a hunting ranch closer to Guaymas and keep us posted.
At dinner the stories were flowing, the smell of a fire and tobacco enhanced the ambiance. The cacophony of the staff busily performing their nightly duties and chattering about their hunts that day and those of the next permeated the cool night air. I was fortunate enough to harvest a great 4x4 and 5x5 Mule Deer buck. Ramon placed me on a Boone & Crockett Coues deer buck that was massive and long. After multiple off hand misses, we ran to the top of a mountain to volley a few more after him. I told Ramon afterward that it was like trying to hit a ghostly jackrabbit with a cannon as that big buck bounced from Joya to Joya and boulder-to-boulder. I was shooting either too high, too low, or behind. We finally sat down to catch our breath and watch a beautiful buck disappear into the distance.
On the final day and afternoon, Ivon, Ramons son, guided me into a good Coues buck, which Ernesto was happy that we harvested. That evening I said my goodbyes to the staff and as I walked around the compound, it was pleasing to listen and feel the many souls that had once hunted in Don Zaragozas camps. I was fortunate to be able to hunt with him one more time!

The permit for the final leg has been the hardest to obtain. The scarcity of permits for non residents and the cost of buying a Mexican or auction sheep tag had made it very difficult. As time has passed the prices have declined somewhat.
I went to the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, Nevada during January 2008. Before leaving for the trip Karen had asked "What I would like to hunt most in the world?" Without hesitation I told her "desert sheep". At that moment I did not realize the significance of her question.
Karen and I spent two days at the convention cruising around and visiting with old friends and meeting with different Mexican outfitters about prices and their offerings for desert sheep hunts. At that time I felt it was still out of my range, but it was fun to learn about the different areas and their individual operations.
We had passed a display from Sey Outfitters in New Zealand where a beautiful tahr bull was mounted. It is owned by a very nice family whom we met and grew to like over the next two days. We expressed a desire to come over on a holiday and to also visit Australia on the same trip to hunt the Jardine rusa deer. After all, we are that close why not see both continents. It was because of this conversation that we met Andy and his father Mike, who then instructed us to Ernesto Zaragoza Jr. of Club Solimar in Sonora, Mexico.
Mike had hunted with Ernesto in the past. As we neared his exhibit at the convention it was a striking corner. A few pieces of plywood boards, two folding chairs, and a wood placard with "Solimar" engraved on it. Behind a small desk was an unassuming, nicely dressed and quiet gentleman. Karen and I sat down and discussed his program for approximately thirty minutes. It became very clear that he was a sound businessman and conservationist and completely honest about his program. He receives two permits per year from the government. His ranch is 250,000 acres in Sonora where he sheep hunts. He owns several other hunting ranches as well. These include game hunts for dove, mule deer, Coues deer and desert sheep. He also owns and operates a shrimp and sardine fishing business.
Each year he harvests only two rams. They must be ten years old or older. In 2007 the two rams taken both went over 170 B&C. It takes a score of 168 to make the all-time list in Boone & Crockett record book. Ernesto had reduced his price from 60,000 to 50,000 dollars.
While he and I discussed his ranch, biological surveys, ram selection, and hunt plan, I watch Karen very closely. Karen is a registered nurse auditor. She can smell a rat a mile away if one exists and her math skills are exemplary. After a while I informed her I felt that this was the hunt to take if one were going to purchase such a permit. Without hesitation she informed me that I should buy the hunt and she would support the decision. I was pleasantly surprised at her response and wasted no time in signing the contract before she changed her mind. I asked her to sign a check since I had forgotten my check book. Her first check was illegible and had to be re-written. She told Ernesto she needed practice. It made her nervous to write so many zero's on one check.
The contract was for $10,000 down and a total of $50,000 for a 2008 guaranteed 10 year old desert sheep trophy ram. The season would start in November of 2008 and end in March 2009. His scouts start looking in November. His mule deer are in January each year. He is on the lookout for big rams, but generally limits hunting to deer during that month.
The time came to finalize the trip. The USA is in a great recession and spiraling downward with a new president to take office. The Banks, building industry and now the auto industry are in dire straights. Bailouts are everywhere. Again corporate America has invoked havoc in the stock markets and our daily lives. With the 401k disappearing and gasoline at five dollars per gallon, it was a very difficult decision to continue this hunt. I had already cancelled four other guided and non-guided hunts for 2008-9. I made a call to Mr. Zaragosa to inquire as to my options should the financial death spiral continue.
It was several days later before I heard from Don Ernesto Zaragosa Sr. His comments were "When America gets a cold, Mexico gets pneumonia".
It was with great skill that he reassured me about the hunt. His Donnish ways won over. However, the first time I went to the bank to withdraw the funds I left the bank without the money. I just could not do it. After returning home and whining over the economy for several days my sons and Karen demanded that I stop and simply go get the sheep. My dear friend Dr. Wm. Baker, who had hunted around the world and flown in three wars, also gave me an Ernest Hemingway book to read on his African safari. An inscription simply stated "Go Hunting". So I did!
As it turned out, it does not get any better than this! I had the entire 250,000 acre ranch with three guides and drivers, one chef (who seconded as a waiter and maid), the ranch manager, and Don Zaragosa Sr., at my disposal each day. They had already pre-scouted and found two acceptable rams for harvest before I had arrived.
I harvested the ram on the second day of the hunt after a very merry stalk on the mountain. Two ewes in estrus lead three rams and us all over the mountain before the situation allowed a shot to be taken. They were not going to bed down. On day four, I harvested a very nice 4 X 5 Sonora mule deer. Tough hunting the desert mule deer when they are not in the rut.
I was taken to Guaymas as Don Zaragosa's guest at his hotel they gave me a tour of the city and their holdings. I was given permission to view his hunting collection and had dinner with his distinguished family. He hunted for twenty one years - six months a year. You cannot imagine the depth and breadth of his achievements in sport hunting. I also was taken to one of his bird ranches and shot doves with Marcos and CHilo (the sheriff of Ortiz). You have to know, this was too much fun and it simply does not get any better.
I have hunted four continents and nine countries. The service in Sonora by Club Solimar was excellent. The guides were proficient and professional. The quarters were neat and clean. The food was excellent and delicious. The Chilean wines were extraordinarily good. The equipment was up to date and functioned flawlessly. Trophy care was unmatched. The weather cooperated. They had received 24 inches of rainfall this summer. The usual is 9 inches for the region. The grass was knee high in most places and the cactus in bloom everywhere. I spent many days in the field chasing a Coues deer.
Don Zaragoza Sr is a gentleman of the "Old Spanish World Order". I cannot adequately express the joy of his fire side chats about hunting, business, politics and other issues that he and I discussed. His knowledge of hunting is enormous in general and specifically vast concerning sheep throughout the world. It was as if I was spending time hunting and listening to my grandfather's tales of hunting expeditions.
The Solimar Outfitter's Company is unsurpassed in my opinion. I unconditionally recommend them. The most memorable moments for me will not be the taking of my slam but the making of a new friend and listening and learning from Don Ernesto Zaragoza Sr.
All in, all done, you will never get better than this.
