HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
It's about an eight hour drive between Baku, capital of Azerbaijan and base camp. First leg by regular car, second leg by a large Russian built 4X4 van, third leg by large Russian built truck. The road gets to being nonexistent, a lot of it up a dry river bed to the main camp at 6,000 feet according to my altimeter. The next day we went using a horse until it got steep then by hiking up to a spike camp at 11,000 feet. The next day we climbed approximately another 500 feet plus, up over he top, past snow fields, and of course down the other side. Shot tur late, late afternoon, it rolled, skidded and tumbled down slipperiest mountain I have ever seen. The guides went down for the tur and I headed back to camp. As mentioned the mountains are extremely steep, the going up is one thing but going down is A LOT worse. The guides are really exceptional they handle the mountains like you and I would the level. You might say the most memorable part of the trip was the final leg of the road trip going back to Baku. The driver we had on that part of the trip was a complete idiot. Passing cars on complete blind curves etc. Twice forced completely off the road at approximately 50 mph to avoid a head on. Well that certainly added spice to things. It was a great hunt and trip. Everything very well organized. Great guides, great crew.

All I ask for in a hunt is a chance to shoot. I had that. I should have pushed the guide from day one. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I purchased this hunt at the SCI auction in Hinkley, MN. Things seemed to be going well with email contact with Shikar Safaris. I was notified I would have to fax a gun and visa form along with a scanned copy of my passport. I faxed back all the documents they required. I then received an email with a letter of invitation, to apply for a visa. I had no problem with the visa. Nothing else was mentioned about a gun import permit. I thought I was ready to go. WRONG.
I arrived at the airport and was informed that I needed a permit to import my rifle to Pakistan. The airline could not allow my gun on the plane without the permit. Knowing I could get a rifle from the outfitter, I called my wife back to the airport to take my rifle and ammo back home.
Knowing I was in trouble with long range shooting, which ibex are noted for, I left for my trip anyway. I was met at the airport in Islamabad by Farhad Maqpoon, he ran me through immigration with no problems. I asked Farhad about the problems I had with import permit for my rifle, and he replied I did not need a permit to bring a rifle in to Pakistan. He said the airlines was wrong.
Next I met my guide and driver. They took me on a three day drive to the hunting area. Halfway there we ran into a rock slide which blocked the road, which added a fourth day to the trip. We met the government onlooker which was supposed to be with me when I was hunting. I then asked him if I needed a permit to import a firearm into Pakistan and he said yes. Later I asked my guide about what the government onlooker had said about the permit and he replied he wouldn't know anything about permits as he was with the Wildlife Department.
I shot my rental gun ($200) at 100 yards, and 300 yards. I was going to check at four and five hundred, but my guide said there was no need that we would get within 300 yards easily.
There were seven local spotters that were scattered around the area. They were not very well equipped, some didn't even have binoculars, even my guide, but they all expected a tip.
The first day of the hunt which ended up being a half day was spent glassing from the road. My guide showed me several ibex, but due to the lack of snow the larger ones were high. Day two we walked up a valley, (about an hour and a half from the road) it was an easy walk. We arrived at a rock shelter where we glassed from. There were plenty of ibex around, but the larger ones were high. My guide would point out a lower one and tell me it was about 36 inches, then point out one of the higher ones I picked out and tell me it was 37 inches. My eyes are not that bad. After a couple of hours of him telling me about the one inch difference between the high ones and the low ones, I simply showed him that the high ones' horns came up around and then came back down towards the backbone, and the lower ones' horns went up around, but not down.
I told him if I was to shoot one it would be one that looked like the ones that were high. My guide as having discussion with the spotters, which I did not understand and while they were talking the ibex moved about half way down. My guide said we would attempt a stalk. With the number of animals it was impossible to get into range. By this time my guide figured out that I would not shoot a smaller one, so he decided to get a 5 am start on day three.
Day three we were headed for the top; it was a very long and slow process. With all the ibex it was very difficult to maneuver around. We made it near the top where the larger ones were, and the closest we could get was about 520 yards. My guide told me to shoot, and I told him I didn't know what this gun would do at that range. So he had to tell me where I was hitting. The first shot was a miss, so I asked him where did I hit, he replied I don't know, shoot again. I shot again raising slightly. I asked where did I hit, he replied I don't know, shoot again. I took four more shots rising slightly each time and they were gone. After all was said and done my guide told me I was shooting high. I asked him why he didn't tell me that when I was shooting, and I could have corrected my shots. He put his tail between his legs and headed down the mountain.
Day four and final day was spent trying to find ibex off the road and we couldn't find any trophy quality. In a last ditch effort to get me to shoot one, he put an ibex in my spotting scope that was about 28 inches. He explained to me that the ibex had a very nice coat and if I was to shoot him Farhad would send me a bigger set of horns. I told him I was not that kind of hunter. He apologized.
Time for the ride back to Islamabad. We made a three day trip in two days. When I arrived in Islamabad I was met by Farhad Maqpoon again. He asked what went wrong. I told him not having my own rifle really put the screws to me. He replied my tag was good until the end of March and if I was to return he would get me a permit for my rifle.
All flights were fine to and from the US. There is a flight from Islamabad to Gilget which would have saved a lot of travel time and left more time for hunting. I was never informed of this option.
I use the Hunting Report to get the information I need before I go on a hunt. If I had know then what I know now I would have handled things differently. I was under the assumption that this was a trophy hunt. Kaan needs to inform the guides that if the bigger ones are high then it's time to earn their pay and go after them. The hunting time is short with all the travel time, the last thing you need is a guide who drags his feet.
As far as the firearms permit matter, I contacted Bob Kerns from The Hunting Consortium LTD, he also books hunts to Pakistan. He told me he sends copy of the firearms permit with all of his hunters, as you never know what the airlines will say they need for documents.
There is definitely trophy caliber ibex in this area you just have to hunt for them. Printing this report will let other Hunting Report subscribers know what they are getting into. Hopefully Kaan will lay down the law to his guide and those who work in his office so future hunters have the documents whether needed or not.
So my answer is yes publish my report, and hopefully it will make things better for everyone involved. I did turn down Kaans' offer to go back to Pakistan. I don't have the time this year to go back nor do I want to.
Rebuttal Comments from Shikar Safaris:
We are handling hunters from USA, Europe, Russia and Mexico for different trophy hunting since 1998, until today we have never sent a gun import permit to hunters.
We had David Swenson hunting with us Himalayan ibex (SCI Donation) in the past December in Pakistan. He had problems with his airlines company and he could not bring his rifle along in Pakistan. He is complaining because we did not provide him with a gun permit beforehand thing we never done. We have never had a situation that any airline did not accept guns to fly to Pakistan.
We only need the government permission in import/re-export and carry the gun to the hunting area in Pakistan. Mr. Swenson's gun permission papers were ready with us to clear his gun from the custom authorities in Islamabad airport. Permission from the Ministry of Commerce to import/re-export his gun dated 6.11.2006. NOC from Ministry of Tourism dated 30,11,2006 to carry the gun to the hunting area.
The reason why the airline in USA did not allow David to carry the gun was because the airline was not informed by travel agent well in time that Mr. Swenson is carrying the gun to Pakistan, so it is just a allegation on Shikar Safaris that airline needed the gun permit. We also sure that Mr. David Swenson did not filled the US Customs Personal Effects Form 4457, this document is called a Personal Effect Form 4457 and its purpose is to prove ownership of these items prior to your departure. This document is optional but is leaves absolutely no question of ownership and can eliminate any hassle US Customs can give you pertaining to your firearms. The form is good for life and you must obtain it in person by taking your firearms and any other items with serial numbers you would like to register to the US Customs office. The American Airlines also have instructions, Firearms and Ammunition may not be carried by a passenger on an aircraft. However, unloaded firearms may be transported in checked baggage if declared to the agent at check in and packed in a suitable container. Handguns must be in a locked container. Boxed small arms ammunition for personal use may be transported in checked luggage. Amounts may very depending on the airline.
We did tell David that you do not need a permit to board your gun to the airplane, but you do need a Pakistani permit to clear your gun from the custom authorities.
The flights to Gilgit depends on the weather, if the weather is not clear and cloudy, the flight does not operate. In case of Swenson, David the weather was bad and the flights did not get through, so we have to send him to Gilgit by road and brought him by road spending even more money. (Flight details may be checked from Pakistan International Airline web site www.Piac.com). The flight to Gilgit cost US 100 one way and transport to Gilgit cost US $250 one way.
There were many ibex in this region as admitted by David Swenson, but due to the lack of snow they were high up on the mountain. He did fire at a distance of 418 yards and missed a big ibex, after the first shot he fired three more shots and missed again. It was not the fault of the gun, but it was hunter's fault as David Swenson was proved with a Blaser 300WM with a 6-18 power Swarovski TDS Scope calibered up to 500 yards. Several International hunters have used the same gun for their Himalayan ibex and Blue sheep hunts.
The hunting procedures in that once a hunter fires and missed, he loses the chance but in Swenson, David's case we offered him to come back and get the trophy until 20th, April 2007, it was a special favor given to him
We did tell that if the airline still needs some papers, we will provide him on the next trip.

Comments: |
Caoming back out of Istanbul to New York turned into a nightmare with Turkish Customs and Turkish Airlines. They insisted for over 2 hours that our ammunition could not be carried seperately from the rifles in our duffle bags. At one point they wanted the ammunition locked up in separate plastic bags and check it through with the other luggage. We just barely made it on the plane in time to depart for New York. |

To take a bezoar ibex that measures over 120" has been a hunting goal of mine for a long time. I think the bezoar ibex is the most magnificent of the ibex trophies you can collect. I was able to accomplish this goal on my ibex hunt in Turkey in November of 2003 in that the ibex I took measured 120 3/8". The area where I hunted is in the Taurus Mountains near the city of Silifke. To get to the area where I hunted you fly from Istanbul to Adana and drive approximately two hours to Silifke. Silifke is a wonderful city to enjoy in the southern area of Turkey.
Silifke is a town made interesting by its old quarters amid ancient ruins. The town sits on the Goksu River, in which Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa drowned while bathing during the Third Crusade on his way to Jerusalem. The fortress in the city probably dates back to the times of the Crusades, and an enormous water cistern is carved out of the rocks at the foot of the city. The Ulu Mosque in Silifke is of Seljuk origin, which is surrounded by a wall of corner towers. Adjacent to the prayer hall, there is also a medrese, which is a Koran school.
Another interesting city to visit in the area is Tarsus. Between the two big cities of Adana and Mersin, in southern Turkey, lies Tarsus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Although today it is overshadowed by its two bigger neighbors, Tarsus was a very important city in ancient times. It was here that Cleopatra supposedly met Mark Antony. It was also the birthplace of St. Paul. In Acts 21:39, Paul is proud of his city and says, "I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city". Many armies marched through the pass north of the city in the Taurus Mountains, including the Persian Xerxes and Alexander the Great. The pass was later named "Gates of Judas" by the crusaders.
The Taurus Mountains are a beautiful area to hunt. The mountains have the steep cliffs normally associated with ibex hunting and as you look down from the top of the mountains, you can see the Goksu River to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The ibex population in this area is abundant and the trophy size is outstanding. Interestingly, the name of the actual mountain I took the ibex on was Mount Karakaya and I was personally guided on this hunt be Kaan Karakaya and his outstanding team. Kaan and his team were well organized and we located and took the ibex on the first day of the hunt.
We located the ibex I wanted right after daybreak about two-thirds of the way up the mountain. We made a plan to go to the top of the mountain and try to relocate the ibex, whereas we would be climbing down instead of up the mountain during the stalk. It took about two hours to locate the ibex after we started our descent from the top. We located the ibex in his bed at about 200 yards from where I would take the shot. I waited until the ibex stood up after about 45 minutes and made the shot, which was straight down.
This was my fifth hunt with Kaan. He and his team have always come through with excellent areas to hunt and I have always taken excellent trophies with Kaan Karakaya.

Here is my hunting report from Tajikistan.
My Danish hunting friend Peter Zobel and I have just returned from a most successful hunt for Marco Polo in Tajikistan booked with Kaan Karakaya of Shikar Safaris, Turkey. The hunt took place from October 25 to November 6, 2002.
This was my 3 hunt for Marco Polo in Tajikistan (1993, 1994 and 2002) and I had already taken 2 nice rams before, but I love this area and this hunt so much that I just had to come back.
We chose once more to hunt with Atobek Bekmurodi out of the Murgab area, which in my opinion today is the best area in Tajikistan for big Marco Polo sheep but possibly also one of the best sheep hunts in the world. They have 3 super camps. We hunted out of Hot Springs camp.
We once more booked our hunt with Kaan Karakaya of Shikar Safaris who is super. He knows the people and the areas and speaks the languages. Kaan was kind enough to go personally on this trip together with us. Kaan arranged everything in the most fantastic way and we had the most well arranged hunt.
Hunting was very difficult because we had no snow. Peter Zobel and I only wanted world-class rams and all the biggest rams were higher than 18,000 feet on the border mountains of Afghanistan. This made hunting very tough but also very beautiful and very interesting and I regard it as one of the most beautiful sheep hunts that I have ever had. This is very much different to the December/January hunt, which can be easier because some of the Marco Polo sheep is low in the valleys and you can hunt them in the white clothes. We had to climb very high every day and with no snow the females and the rams could see us from far away.
Never the less I saw rams in the 60-inch category every single day! I only wanted a heavy ram so I passed up quite a few opportunities to take 58-61 inch rams that were light. Some of the big rams we simply couldn't get to because they were too high or to difficult.
Peter Zobel took a fantastic 61 x 55 x 14 x 14 ram on the first day with a certified green score of 208 5/8.
I hunted all 8 days from early morning to late, late evening and finally on the last day 4 hours driving from camp we spotted a bunch of more than 100 rams, one good 60-inch and one very heavy ram a little shorter. I chose to take the very heavy ram and I think that was a right decision. He is measuring 58 x 58 x 17 1/4 x 17 1/4 and has a certified green score by a SCI Master Measurer of 221 4/8. According to the local people in the camp this is the heaviest Marco Polo that they have shot. It was a 9-year-old ram.
I hunted every day with Kaan Karakaya himself together with Atobek and Sascha. Peter Zobel was hunting with Zafar and Shodi. These people did everything they could to please us and we had a fantastic trip. If we had the time and the money we would go back every fall to do the same hunt as I think there is nothing above it. We also saw grizzly bears! and wolfs plus a lot of Ibex. That must be the highest living grizzlies in the world. We took video of them.
The game conservation that the Bekmurodi family has accomplished in this area is fantastic. There is no poaching and sheep everywhere and it seems that there is a good understanding with the local shepherds who are not in the Marco Polo valleys any more so that the Marco Polo sheep has the most golden age of their existence. I hunted in the same mountains in 1994 and saw very few sheep. I will say that the sheep population in these border mountains of Afghanistan has more than 5-doubled since 1994?
It was great to have Kaan Karakaya along personally. He is a great hunter and he is a close friend of all these people so that one can be absolutely sure to have a first class treatment.

|
In early October 2001, four couples from America met in Beijing and began a memorable excursion through Mainland China with Kaan and Cagda Karakaya of Shikar Safaris (Cumhuriyet Cad. No: 78/402, Antalya 07040, Turkey. Tel: 011-90-242-247-78-8. Fax: 011-90-242-243-89-1. E-mail: info@shikarsafaris.com. Web: www.shikarsafaris.com). Kaan arranged the trip, which included many sightseeing opportunities around Mainland China and a fantastic hunt for Tibetan gazelle and blue sheep.
The participants from the US included my wife, Lori, and me from Dallas, Texas, and Richard and Karen Wacker, Robert and Laurie Smith and Dave and Teri Bahl, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Becoming acquainted with Beijing was a great adventure. We spent several days viewing such well-known landmarks as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall. We were even fortunate enough to tour a typical farming village and visit some of the villagers' private homes.
From Beijing we flew to X'ian and visited the site of the excavation of the Terra-cotta Warriors and even met one of the farmers who originally made the discovery. At this point in our trip, the men left X'ian to travel to Xining, where we would begin the journey up into the mountains to our hunting camp. The ladies flew to the city of Chendu, where they, too, would have a journey into the mountains by private motor coach. Their mountain adventure took them to the area of the famous Chinese giant pandas, where they were allowed to actually hold and hug these unique animals while having their photographs taken with them.
The ladies visited gardens, museums, temples and craft shops, attended traditional Chinese musicals and enjoyed tea ceremonies and sampled lots of interesting Chinese food. They then proceeded to Shanghi, where shopping was very good, I understand, and finally flew back to Beijing, where they met up with their husbands once again.
Now to the hunt. When we left Xining in 4wd vehicles, we headed up to the Tibetan plateau, commonly known as the Roof of the World. After about 12 hours, we arrived at our hunting camp, which was located at approximately 13,000 feet. This was the most colorful camp I have ever seen. The Tibetan guides had pitched our tents, which were white with multi-colored designs decorating the circumference of the tents. We were quickly informed of the availability of a doctor in camp to make certain no one suffered from the effects of the extremely high altitude.
Outside of the North and South Poles, Tibet is one of the few places on Earth that is still predominantly wilderness. The highest mountains, deepest gorges, vast grasslands, many lakes and the uncharted, primeval cloud forests of Tibet are what give the Roof of the World its uniqueness.
The name of the area we hunted was Maduo, and the camp was located on the shores of Lake Eling. Lake Eling is the headwaters of the Yellow River in China. The two animals that were available to hunt were the blue sheep and the Tibetan gazelle. Each hunter left camp on horseback with two Tibetan guides, and we hunted as high as 15,000 feet. The terrain was rugged, however, there were no trees, and from the tops of the mountains, you could see for long distances. I took a very good blue sheep and Tibetan gazelle during the hunt. The game was plentiful, and the accommodations were excellent, considering that we were in an extremely remote area. The guides and the staff in the camp were friendly and very competent, and all of us had an excellent hunt. The cost of this hunt, not including airfare, was $15,000.
Arriving back in Beijing, we stayed again at the Beijing Hyatt Hotel, which was lovely, and we prepared for the long flight home. This was certainly a trip that I would recommend to anyone who wants a first-hand look at Mainland China, a great cultural experience, and a fantastic hunt. Kaan put together a first-class trip that neither Lori nor I will ever forget. This was an exceptional experience that one can never describe fully or completely accurately, as it included so many adventuresome and educational opportunities as well as a great hunting trip. If I had to sum it up in two words, I would say that this three-week trip was an "Oriental Extravaganza."

Hunt is as described in a brochure. Terrain is flat and easy, but longer walking on farm and forest roads; emphasis on quiet. Boars are very sensitive, shots can be longer, with challenge of clean shooting visibility. I recommend Magnum rifle since it allows a bit more margin for a one shot kill, second shot unlikely!
All hunting is in dark, 10p.m. to 5a.m., very different for most of us. Hunt is conducted by full moon, without lights. Need thick cross haires on a quality larger apature scope. Boars are in cut wheat stubble primarily.
We lived on an eight-foot sailing yacht, you can swim in a very clean Mediterranean Sea, eat fresh fish and great cuisine; remote ports visited, many world class ruins; ship to shore in Zodiac launch; Turks very friendly people; great spouse/fiance event; shopping for carpet, etc.

Spot and stalk hunting is extremely difficult here. You would have to be in mountain-climbing shape to do it. The hunting area here is very mountainous. It is spooky, even dangerous, with extremely steep mountain sides and very narrow walking ledges. Despite the difficulties, the guides were very good hunters and knew where to set me up for a good shot. I took my tur on the fifth day of the hunt and saw abundant numbers of animals.
As for my mideastern brown bear, this was strictly a hunt of opportunity. We happened upon an abundance of bear sign while picking wild berries one day, and decided to try hunting one. While none of the guides spoke English, I was able to negotiate the purchase of four domestic sheep, which I used as bear bait. Once a bear hit one of the baits, I was able to set up and shoot it when it returned for another free meal. With all the bear sign we saw, I think there is an opportunity for a hunter to get an SCI record book bear here.

Condition Comments: |
I saw a 55 inch Bezoar ibex that easily would have been the new SCI number one. After an eight hour climb and stalk, we got within 300 yards when the wind suddenly shifted and the ibex ducked behind some rocks. We next saw him going over the ridge 750 yards away. |

|
It was wonderful to hunt in a remote area such as Kazakhstan. The mountains where we hunted on horseback were on the border of China. It was really a rewarding experience to stay with a Kazak family in tents like the ones used for the last 5,000 years. This area and these mountains have not changed since the time when Genghis Kahn rode across them on his way to sack Rome. The people still live exactly as they did centuries ago. There are no roads, and the only civilization is the Kazaks who live in the area. The game was very plentiful, especially for the ibex. I have never seen as many ibex in one area as there were in this location. The scenery was absolutely magnificent, and the remoteness of the area provided for a spectacular trip. On this trip, I took maral that had a 55 inch main beam and an Ibex that measured 48-1/2 inches and 49 inches. As usual, after I took my ibex, I saw several others that exceeded 50 inches.
