HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
Rebuttal
Dear John,
I apologize for not replying sooner to your e-mail of October 2. I have been in the bush with clients.
2005 has been one of the most challenging years for safari operators in the history of this country. You have no idea what it is like to try and survive in a third world country.
Your elephant safari was booked at a net daily rate of $533. We guaranteed that rate, knowing there was a possibility operating cost could increase somewhat. Little did we know, however, that by the time your safari was conducted, inflation was over 450%, there was no fuel available in the country, and there was sporadic supplies of some basic commodities, much less "luxuries", like Coca-Cola. These factors made a big difference in overhead cost. Yet, we honored our daily rate commitment to you.
I have no doubt, should you compare other safari operators daily rates for an elephant safari during peak season, the rates would range between $850 - $1,200.
An additional expense to us was the relocation of your safari. As explained, we felt it was in the best interest for the success of your safari to relocate you to another area. This was not our own concession area, but that of another operator. So, we were responsible for paying him a daily rate, as well.
Was there any reason why you did not address the issue bothering you before you left? You sure had enough time. It could have cleared up a lot of issues. It now appears that you're "hell bent" on a mission of character assassination.
My decision to take the Gator and Honda with us was to facilitate your hunt, and also to increase your opportunity for success. This equipment is not normally part of any safari. You are implying that the whole time was spent repairing equipment. How much time was actually lost? As was customary, every morning was spent by myself and the game scout running the riverbed looking for elephants. When the trailer was smashed, I had already done the "recci". We recovered the trailer and continued hunting in Ward 25 (David's area.) It was only after that that we continued on to Chiredizi to have the trailer repaired.
I must admit that this took loner than anticipated, but was done during what would normally be "downtime/siesta" anyway. When we returned to the hunting area, I was quite prepared to resume hunting at Chilo. In fact, we were in the river bed when you called it off. You stated you were tired of bouncing around in the vehicle (maximum three hours.)
In your report, you never mention the time spent outside normal safari hunting time. What about the hours spent hunting at night? Like you, I also kept a detailed journal. I challenge you to make a comparison of the time spent on breakdowns with time spent outside normal hunting time.
The relocation of your safari is covered in Savannah Safaris Terms and c\conditions, which you agreed to. When I questioned you about the sliding scale of the elephant trophy fee on the first day, you said you were unaware of the e-mail which was sent to you on July 23, in which you were notified of the relocation, the reason for the relocation, and the different prices. In view of this, I gave you my assurance that the trophy fee for the elephant would remain the same, although I stood to possible lose thousands of dollars.
It was obvious to me that your reading "Karamojo", bull elephant hunting had more of a negative effect on you than a positive one. In 2005, one does not see 75 pound elephants around every corner; although a 75 pound elephant was shot in the Mahenya area only one month prior to your safari. We are currently waiting to weigh another elephant shot last week on the island in Ward 25. This is the same area where you were uncomfortable hunting. We expect this trophy to be 50 pounds or better.
In another e-mail from you, you refer to wanting to shoot a sable only if it's Roland Ward. As we did not offer sable on this safari, I'm still confused.
You refer to "a friend" of yours who had recently hunted the area where you were supposed to hunt. As I have exclusive concession rights in that area, I can only assume that your friend was poaching in my area or fabricating the story. How many 75 pound elephants did he see? Was the friend hunting on Nottingham Estate, perhaps? If so, there are no trophy elephant on quota in that concession.
There are strict quotas which safari operators must adhere to; you have to be honest and admit that you had several opportunities of shooting a representative specimen. You elected not to.
I refer to some of your comments in your submission to the Hunting Report.
Under "species and reason for lack of success": 1. Elephant: I believe this subject has been covered sufficiently. There are proven records of large elephants having been taken in this area, and this was one of the reasons we chose to relocate you there. 2. . Leopard: I encourage you to "ask around", and see how many hunters have been on numerous leopard hunts before taking this trophy. Unless one is hunting with hounds, it sometimes takes more than one "try" to bag this elusive species. Other clients are lucky and harvest this species on their first try. Your safari was "fair chase", and it's unfortunate the cards didn't fall in your favor. 3. Lion: The Zimbabwe National Parks Authority issues all quotas for all hunting areas in the country. If there were no lion in the area, there would have been none on quota. 4. Hyena: Ditto number three above. Under "Ratings" Ability of Guide/PH: I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but with over 25 years experience hunting in the African bush, I have found most of my clients consider my abilities and knowledge excellent.
Condition of Equipment: Again, I disagree with your rating. Considering the harsh conditions of the African bush and the overall performance of my equipment, it is in good condition.
In closing, I refer you to Savannah Safaris Booking Terms and Conditions, specifically numbers 4 and 11.
Sincerely,
A. J. Strauss

|
I just returned from a hunt with Alec Strauss, Savanna Safaris in Southern Zimbabwe. Fabulous! We experienced no problems whatsoever, people very friendly and eveything seemed just the same as my first hunt there in 1990. I have hunted Africa several times and this was Tops. This was a rather specialized hunt as it was mainly for crocodile to finish out my "Dangerous 7" as my croc last year sank. I cannot say enough for Jan and Alec Strauss. Jan is an extremely pleasant person and Alec has an excellent dry sense of humor. His knowledge of the bush is almost unbelievable, but then he has been a PH for 22 years besides spending 15 years in the bush in gorilla warfare where you have to know to be able to survive. In all my hunting I have never met the likes of him - I got my crocodile, a 15 foot 10 1/2 inch after checking out dozens. Passed up a huge hippo and very large wildebeest, took and exceptional black giraffe, saw all kinds of game including over 200 eland in one day. Had to scramble up a kopje to get out from and elephant that had killed a girl the week before and was out looking for new prospects. A neck and neck race down the road with some prospective poachers, checking out caves where people had lived in past generations, etc. The maid and laundry service were outstanding! I have never seen so much game. All in all, the best possible safari anyone could possibly ask for.
