The Torra Conservancy is unlike any other area that I have hunted or seen in Africa. It is a million acres of unbelievable semi-desert, mountain and bolder strewn wilderness. It's worth the money just to see the place. While there is not a tremondous assortment of game available, there are large numbers of springbok, mountain zebra, ostrich and giraffe. There is also a sizable population of gemsbok and good kudu are available in spots. One is also likely to see black rhino (largest free-ranging population in the world), elephant, and possibly lion, spotted hyena, leopard and cheetah. Charly also has a very fine traditional Namibia hunting ranch, Otjitambi Guest Ranch, located about a hundred miles north of Torra, http://www.otjitambi.iway.na/index_en.htm

"Charly" Schlettwein owns and operates both the Otjitambi Guest Ranch and Savannah Safaris Namibia. I spent a few days hunting at Otjitambi, a 32,000 acre ranch which has been in his family since 1903. It is a couple hour drive to the Torra Conservancy. A vast unspoiled desert environment. Not a wide variety of game but what does occur is great quality and was not uncommon to see hundreds of Springbok and Mountain in one place. Black Rhinos are seen almost daily. Plenty Ostrich, Giraffe, Gemsbok as well as the occasional Elephant, Cheetah, Lion, Leopard. A truly wild and interesting place, nothing like traditional African "bush" country. I plan to return and spend some time at the Skeleton Coast/Namib desert, only an hour from the camp at Torra.

SERVICE RATINGS (excellent, good, fair or poor)
Quality of Outfit: Excellent Guide/PH Ability: Excellent
Condition of Camp: Excellent Condition of Equipment: Excellent
Quality of Food: Excellent Trophy Care: Excellent
Name of Airline: Lufthansa, Air Namibia Airline Service: Excellent
Airline Comments: My flights were on time and I did not lose any baggage there or back. Lufthansa is an easy airline to fly with firearms. I visited Germany on my way back for a week, and my firearms were kept at Frankfurt airport. No problems depositing or picking them back up, and the airport staff were very helpful. Air Namibia's flights into and out of Africa were comfortable and the service was very good.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt:
Highlights of Hunt: Seeing abundant game in a vast, wild hunting area. Seeing a black rhino in the wild. Taking exceptional game. Experiencing Africa.
Equipment Recommendations: Maybe sunscreen and broadbrimmed hat. Sun can be strong there. Also, given that the Torra is desert country, the air is very dry. Shots are not all that far compared to some Western U.S. hunting. 250 yards would be a long shot.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? Absolutely. Henk Fourie, the owner/operator of Savannah Safaris is a great host who will take care of any specialized needs. This hunt is a great value and experience.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
This was my first time to Africa and really infected me with the bug to return. My safari with Savannah Safaris was enjoyable in every respect. Henk and Rika are gracious hosts, and took care of my needs whether it was trying to get phone issues straightened out (with local SIM card) or finding gifts for loved ones on the way home. The hunting was terrific. Saw and took high quality animals in Torra and was also able to hunt a few days on Okatjeru farm on central plateau. Took a terrific red hartebeest there. According to Okatjeru's owner, the SCI number one hartebeest was taken from this farm. The hunting there is as fair chase as anywhere. We saw abundant red hartebeest, warthog, eland and even saw a leopard one morning stalking a small group of cattle. Okatjeru's owners are also terrific hosts, and the lodging and food there is first class and would be a good destination for a family hunt. The Torra camp is comfortable. Hunters sleep in large tents set on permanent platforms with en-suite bathrooms. Hot water heated with woodstove outside tent. Main camp building houses kitchen, dining area and bar area. Off the dining and bar area there is a veranda with a fire platform. The veranda overlooks a broad, scenic valley. The main attraction, the Torra Conservancy, is an approximately 7 hour drive from Windhoek. The Torra (which means "rock" in the local language as I was told) is approximately 1,000,000 acres of high desert. In addition to the game animals I took, we saw giraffe, elephants, hyena, jackals, and rhino. I hunted with Abilio, a Savannah PH, each day in Torra. Abilio is a terrific PH who was able to negotiate his manual shift Toyota cruiser on steep, rocky roads and simultaneously spot a herd of gemsbok many hundreds of yards off. He was also able to accurately size up trophy quality. Savannah's camp in Torra is very comfortable. Hunters sleep in tents on permanent bases with en-suite bath facilities. Hot water heated by woodstove, so the sweet scent of mopane smoke is frequently in the air. The main camp building houses the kitchen and dining and bar areas, which have a great view over a broad valley in the back of the lodge. The staff are very helpful and will see to your needs. The food is very good. We had wild game and other African fare that was prepared by the camp's terrific cook (chef). Cold beverages abundant. Hunting had us out of camp early, back for a customary lunch period and back in the field for a later afternoon/evening hunt. Overall, this was a great experience and a great hunt.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Barbara, This is the best kept secret in Namibia as well as southern Africa. The Torra Conservancy is one million acres all fair chase and free range. The quality of trophies for Oryx, Springbok, Hartman's Mountain Zebra, etc. is just amazing. My wife shot a 44 and 1/2 inch Oryx. If one is patient a 16 - 18 inch Springbok is achievable!! Indeed the SCI #2 all time Springbok at 19 inches comes via this conservancy. Tell all your subscribers to go and go now to this place before it is discovered and trophy quality is affected. This is the only place in the world where fair chase free ranging Hartman's Mountain Zebra can be hunted under true fair chase and free ranging conditions. They are endemic to this area. This is the place shown periodically on Discovery Channel, Animal Plant, National Geographic, etc. for animals known as desert adapted, i.e., the endangered Black Desert Rhino, desert adapted elephants, plants to be seen nowhere else on earth - Welwitschia mirabilis, etc. The sheer beauty and size of this concession is astounding. This is no 25,000 acre common ranch hunt in Namibia. I've been to those twice before and they can not even begin to compare to the Torra Conservancy. The main reason it's so good is: lack of water which limits human population, remoteness (a 7 and 1/2 hour drive from Windhoek) the last 60 miles all on dirt roads, and size. But any knowledgeable and seasoned hunter knows or should know that the best quality hunting and animals usually occur in out of the way difficult to get to places free of daily human interruption. This place is that and then some. While hunting we saw five endangered black rhino, elephants, giraffe, leopard, jackal, klipspringer, even a desert adapted monitor lizard! Also on quota are: leopard, elephant, lion, Klipspringer, jackal, Kudu and Giraffe. In fact, average Kudu on this concession start at 52 inches and go up from there to 58 - 60 inches!! I will send photos of the 44 and 1/2 inch Oryx my wife shot via e mail soon for submission to the Trophy submisson section of the web site. Keep up the good work, Stu Mauney
