ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I purchased this hunt at the Saturday night SCI auction. George Bush Sr., Stormin Norman Schwartzkoff, King of Spain and others have stayed and hunted Pinos Altos. Only real large cost outside the bid price was the VAT tax which is 16% on the list price of the hunt which was $20,000. Taxidermy prep (all trophies shipped to America post season via container in late December) was reasonable and I rented Fernando's custom 7mm Rem Model 700 for $200 that can drive tacks at 100 meters. Anybody that wants a great hunt and their wife will appreciate the touristing should sign up and go for this hunt. They also do great bird shoots for red legged partridge.

December 22, 2010
Hunter: George M. Straw
Guest:  Jean Straw

Date of Hunt: October 11-16, 2010
Country: Spain
Area: South of Madrid and Grenada
Name: Fernando Saiz

Booked:  Won at Safari Club International Saturday evening auction (bid $10,000) in 2008 for one hunter and one guest; one red staf and one ibex with no score upgrades. There are four subspecies or varieties of ibex in Spain (Craig Boddington wrote an article this year in Sport's Afield on these ibex and hunting them): Gredos, Rhonda, Southeaster and Beceite. The kind of ibex I would be huning was not specified in the bid; Fernando picked it.

Species:  8 x 8 red stag on Fernando's estate (high fence); Gold Medal Southeastern Ibex south of Grenada (free range). Game was very abundant. I shot the red stag on second day only because first day we were just looking. Ibex was literally taken the first afternoon of the hunt not more than two hours of hunting -- entire village was helping spot the ibex they had been watching for three days after he appeared above the village. The mountains behind the village just keep on going up and up but I was told the rams come down to breed.

Ratings:  Fernando's accommodations at his estate for the stag hunt were wonderful and we were staying at the Alhambra Hotel in Granada (four hours south of his estate) being a five star establishment for ibex. The food, guide, equipment and trophy care were excellent. Trophies (hides and horns) are all shipped at the end of hunting season for all US hunters to New York in January or February; not in America yet. Airline was United and economy class -- nothing special but inexpensive. Same the money for the Hunting and tourist.

Cost: I bid $10,000 at SCI for the hunt valued at $20,000 by Fernando. Note that he will tack on the end costs of the hunt a VAT tax of 18% on the $20,000 (not what you bid), about $200 per animal taken for taxidermy work and some other miscellaneous small costs for licenses and permits. So end cost of actual hunt was about $14,000 and well worth it.

Problems:  None, our guide Fillipe was a very well educated man fluent in Spanish (he picked us up at the scheduled time at the Wellington Hotel in Madrid) and English and toured us through Toledo, Granada and the Alhambra Fort and Palace. We aslo got to watch a driven red legged partridge shoot. He used Fernando's very nice vehicle for all the driving and was an excellent driver and most pleasant person to spend a week and probably 600 miles of driving with. He has hunted quail in Georgia and knew more about the United States and Spain than most of either country's citizens.

Highlights:  Hunting the ibex was just plain crazy. We were looking right down on the Mediterranean Ocean with condominiums, surf and people swimming below us and village houses on the mountain side and greenhouses all around us. Shot over the roof of the vehicle with a pillow under the rifle after we moved the hikers, bikers and dog walkers out of the way. Everybody in town was in on the hunt and helping our guide locate what was well known to be a monster Southeastern ibex that in fact turned out to be an easy Gold Medal trophy. The 8 x 8 red stag was also quite a trophy and the largest stag we saw in two evenings and one morning of hunting on the estate. Both shots were at about 175 meters and I rented for $200 a 7mm mag from Fernando being his personal hunting weapon and a customized Remington Model 700 with a wonderful three pound trigger pull and Zeiss scope.

Special Equipment:  None needed. Standard clothes for an October hunt in Spain being about September's climate in Colorado.

Recommendation:  Absolutely and yes, I would recommend this hunt to anybody interested. Fernando and Kokie (his wife) are wonderful hosts. The estate is beautiful and the entire hunt and tourist visiting was just as promised. George Bush, Sr., Norman Schwartzkoff and teh King of Spain have all hunted here. Filipe put evrey meal and accommodation on Fernando's credit card and every lunch and dinner for the three of us was over 100 Euros with wonderful seafood most of the time.

Personal:  Please feel free to call me for information if you are interested in this hunt 303-697-4144, 303-329-9222. I have hunted extensively in Africa, New Zealand, England, Canada, Mexico, Spain and many states in the US. Fernando's hunt is as good or better than any I have ever experienced. I was 68 and iin good physical condition -- the red stag was a high fence (but his estate is huge, about nine square miles), shoot from a high enclosed blind over bait (Texas style and  everybody needs an easy hunt sometimes). This ibex came easy too by amazing luck but generally I suggest some hard mountain hunting is in store for the regular ibex hunting experience.

In summary, Fernando Saiz and his wife, Kokie, are the real deal and provide a wonderful experience in Spain both hunting and seeing some of Spain for anybody that wants to come back home with some non native to America trophies instead of just touris pictures to add to their memory banks.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
We have just returned from an eight day hunt in Spain with Fernando Saiz and would like to share our wonderful experience. Gene bought this hunt in 2006 for travel to Spain in November 2007. We not only hunted but spent a few days before and between hunts acting as "tourists". We flew from Philadelphia to Madrid non-stop on US Airways on November 15th, experiencing no problems in checking the firearms. Our entry into Spain was expedient, facilitated by the presence of Juan Mitjans at the airport and the paperwork which had been completed beforehand. Our thanks to Beltran Cotoner for all the e-mails we exchanged before departure; we knew exactly what to expect. We spent three days in Madrid, experiencing the wonderful sights and tastes of this great city.

Our PH, Enrique Muguiro de Sala guided us with professionalism far beyond his years. He was not only knowledgeable about the animals we hunted but about the history and events surrounding the areas we visited. It added a new dimension to our travel between hunting areas. We departed with him from Madrid on Sunday the 18th driving a few hours to the Obon/Beceite area in the province of Aragon. It was here that we were to learn the proper manner to address the ibex; "macho grande". Our local guide was the gamekeeper of the area, Julian Serena Corrales. On our first day, he gave us a good oversight of the hunting area, well-managed as judged by the great condition of the animals. The elevation here is approximately 3,000 feet with rolling hills interspersed with deep canyons and some steep drop-offs. As a note, the ibex have no natural predators in either of the hunting areas we visited. On the second day, the weather was dry and windy. We had been glassing and did see several "potential machos" but Gene wanted to wait for a larger one. Suddenly Julian motioned all of us to get down low. He had spotted two machos climbing the ledge above us, headed for the top of the cliff. Julian and he quickly assessed the one in front was a big one, a "mucho macho grand" Gene seized the only opportunity he would have and took one shot at 186 yards with his 7mm Weatherby. None of us had an idea of how big this animal actually was until we climbed up to him. In the excitement that ensued, it was determined that this could be the new #1 record, 97.4 inch. An incredibly satisfying, yet humbling experience for Gene. He always says "hunting is about being in the right place at the right time". The next day, we traveled with Enrique to the Gredos Mountains area, elevation about 5500 feet, in the province of Avila where Gene took a very nice eleven year old Gredos ibex measuring about 82.25 inches at a distance of about 175 yards. The climb was more difficult in this area; the rocks/boulders we climbed were a bit slippery due to the moisture produced from a light snow, rain and fog. But the birds-eye view from our perch, overlooking the river and watching the fog roll in over the snow-packed mountains was incredible. On this hunt, the local gamekeeper, Valentin Garcia Garcia who knew the area well, was the local guide.

We were very pleased with the results of this hunt and most especially, with having the opportunity to see such well-managed "coto de cazas" (game areas). Our PH and all the associate guides associated with Fernando's operation were very professional and personable, as asset indeed. Our accommodations in both hunting areas were located in the local villages, with a flair all their own. The food, wine, new friends we made, all the wonderful memories we will recount again and again. This is definitely a trip to be taken by the hunter and non-hunter alike as there are so many experiences that can be enjoyed beyond the hunt. Why? This is our (my wife and me) fourth hunt with Fernando all have been first class in every respect. We have taken Gredos, Beceite, and Southern Ibex on our previous trips. Nano has also arranged touring for us before and after each of the trips. Roger and Linda Hooper hunted with us on the first three trips, and were scheduled for this hunt, but had a business problem and could not go this year. We will be taking another hunt with Fernando for the Cantabrian Chamois and Rhonda Ibex.

This trip was taken with my wife and Fernando and his wife Koki took care of every detail to insure a very enjoyable/relaxing trip while at the same time, insuring a successful hunt. Anyone who enjoys high country/alpine hunting would very much enjoy this trip. I am currently in process of setting up a return trip for the other ibex in Spain. No problems with airlines, coming or going or hunting and gun permits in Spain. Highly, highly recommend this hunt.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Fernando Saiz's company is far more special than I can put in a report.

Your hunt starts with being met at Madrid Airport by Fernando's driver with all the paper work completed for your firearms as well as customs and being whisked away by an English speaking driver. My first night was spent at the Wellington Hotel, (I chose to go a day early to let my old body adjust to the time change).

The next day I was picked up exactly at the appointed hour by my professional hunter, Nacho Aries, and driven approximately 120 miles south of Madrid to Pinos Altos. This is Fernando's home place that has been in his family since the 1500's and is today a very special place. He has maintained it perfectly and a great staff that can't do enough for you pampers you.

All of the hunting vehicles are new, the staff is great and you feel as if you are in a dream. Each day we dined on the best food you can imagine and enjoyed fine Spanish wine with each meal. My wife was treated to several local sightseeing and shopping trips that she loved each day. We have hunted in several countries around the world but this was the favorite for my wife.

The game is in great shape and abundant in this area. The only thing Fernando could not do is control the temperature. While hunting southern and Rhonda ibex in the Granada area, the temperature was 30 degrees above normal and it made finding these animals very difficult. I did not get the southern ibex but got a very nice Rhonda ibex.

It was a great time with great people and we cannot wait to go back next year.
