Condition Comments: |
We saw game every day but not in abundance. It is not the Serengeti. You have to work for it but it is worth it. We saw practically every animal presented on their trophy list. Many of the animals were old mature animals. The terrain is Miambo woodland. You should be able to take most any animal they list if you work hard. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The biggest problem is the remoteness of the camp. That is also its charm. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Hunting with the PH Paul Davies who is excellent and taking my magnificent old (12yrs.) huge Dagga Boy. I probably could have taken two more if I had wanted. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
The camp would benefit from radio and internet access. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
This is a great old style African Hunt. Although the camp is first rate you feel as though you were hunting in the earlier times of African Hunting |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
I hunted with Safrique in late October early November of this year. I was originally supposed to hunt another area but my PH had problems with the concession. He contacted Safrique on a last minute basis and Paul Davis the PH in Safrique's L1 concession in the Niassa Reserve consented to take me on at the last minute. I had booked an 18 day lion hunt. I booked the travel through Travel With Guns out of Austin. Safrique's man in Maputo, Dalio met me at the airport and took me to a great hotel where I spent the night and was there again bright and early in the morning to get me on the plane to Lichinga. After arriving in Lichinga and spending the night, I was driven from Lichinga to the Camp in Niassa Reserve. It is a long ride but you get to see a lot of Northern Mozambique. I met the PH Paul Davies in the Camp.
I found the camp to be excellent. It is on top of a mountain with a gorgeous view of the surrounding Niassa Reserve. The bungalos are natural rock and thatch. The bungalo was comfortable with full bathroom; sink, toilet, shower and hot/cold water. two beds to a bungalo with netting. The food was fine. Mostly game. The compound has about three hunter bungalos, one PH bungalo, kitchen, and separate Dinning Room/Main Lodge. There is a water tower that supplies water to everyone and a large diesel generator for power. There is another compound at the bottom of the hill that has the skining sheds and living quarters for the staff, skinners and trackers. Several miles away is another compound that houses the anti-poaching patrols (about twelve men with 12ga shotguns). They are very serious about anti-poaching in this concession Paul turned out to be one of if the best PH's I have ever hunted with (if not the best). He is not only a great guide and PH, he is a true conservationists with a love of the flora and fauna of his concession. He is very selective about the animals harvested and I really appreciated that. Although I did not take a lion, we saw tracks of at least three different small prides.
I was able to take a great old Dagga Boy (12yrs old) a monster warthog and plains game. So, we had plenty of bait to hang. I saw a wide variety of animals. Practically everything on their list. We could have taken at least two additional Buffalo if I had wanted. There were no great herds but small groups of Dagga boys. We saw game every day but not in great abundance. It is not the Serengeti and you have to work for your animals. However, all except my zebra were old mature animals. The Zebra was for a rug so I wanted it unmarked as much as possible. I plan to return again next year for leopard.

This great place is in far northern Mozambique, south of the west side of the Niassa Game Reserve, with the Lugenda River as the western boundary and the Lichinga-Pemba asphalt road as the northern boundary. I tagged along with a nephew hunting leopard, we each had a Roosevelt Sable on license. Bait was set on seven big leopard tracks- we were Wikus' rare clients to not have a shot. We ran our baits from early until dark, the cats just didn't circle back during our 14 days of hunting. If you want a Roosevelt Sable or Eland, come hunt with Safrique! Leopard are all over the place, but it is a very big place. We will happily return. This is an area where big elephant can be found- too bad for Americans, however, the rest of the world should take advantage and go hunt! New camp, great staff. Safrique is training the locals and should be commended for their efforts. Dining and service were great. My non-adventurous wife went with us and will never again miss a trip! She counts this trip as a life changing event. The rest of us who are "hooked on Africa" know exactly what she means. We overnighted in Maputo at the former Holiday Inn- a great beach hotel, as recommended by Safrique. We were met and escorted by Nick Schirripa and Matt Muns. We took an extra day to see the town, capital city of Mozambique. Don't miss their Natural History Museum- dated, but world class- they have a mounted Coelacanth and a skeletonized hippo. There are two geology museums in town, but they were closed.
