ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I hunted first in the Luangwa Valley. The hunting was excellent with lots of game and some exceptional trophies available. Strenuous, fair chase hunting was required but one could find and take trophies for all species encountered. I was especially pleased with the availability of lion and managed to take a fine trophy. I also took a hippo, a puku, a zebra and a roan.

There was minimal evidence of poaching or interference by unauthorized fishing along the river. The government game scout quickly sorted out the one instance when we did encounter unauthorized fishermen. It is fair to say that during my time hunting in the area I never experienced any frustration with poaching or unauthorized activities.

The camp facilities were excellent. The staff was first rate. The food was plentiful and good. I would eagerly hunt again with Safex in this area.

I then moved from the Luangwa Valley to the Bangweulu Swamp area to hunt for black lechwe, tsessebe, sitatunga, oribi and bush pig. I chose to drive rather than take a charter flight from Luangwa to Banweulu in order to see more of the country. While I was happy I did, I would not recommend this to any but the most adventurous. It was a long, physically demanding drive over some difficult terrain and bad trails and roads. I'll fly the next time.

The Bangweulu area has large concentrations of lechwe, tsessebe and oribi and reedbuck. My sense was that poaching and constant pressure from unauthorized groups of fishermen were making the already elusive sitatunga even more so. Having said this, I did manage to take a fine sitatunga after four days of really hard hunting. Special praise must go to my PH, Peter Bartosz, who worked extremely hard to put me in the right place at the right time.

I must also mention, however, that poaching and increasing pressure by fishermen are seriously degrading the hunting quality in this area. One evening while sitting in a machan hunting for sitatunga, I personally saw poachers in action. They were a considerable distance away from me but I could watch them make an approach on a herd of lechwe. There were three men in the group, one of whom had an old black powder muzzleloader. I also came across the remains of a young, male sitatunga that had been killed by a snare. The snare was still around the remains. Clearly the government must take deliberate, effective and immediate action to improve hunting conditions in this area or the safari business will come to an end.

I would strongly recommend Alex Walker's operation, Safex to anyone who might inquire about my experience. I would even more strongly recommend my PH, Peter Bartosz. His attention to detail, his ability quickly and accurately to judge a trophy, his vigilance with regard to my safety and his untiring good humor combined to make this a truly memorable hunt for me. I intend to hunt again with Peter next year.

I cannot say anything positive or complimentary about the booking agent I used. With the exception of introducing me to Safex, he did nothing to assist me. The only time he responded with alacrity was when he was asking for money. When I encountered a particularly difficult problem that almost ended the hunt before it started, the booking agent fled. He did try to take credit for solving the problem much to the disgust of all who really played a part in affecting the solution. I will not deal with this fellow again.

If asked, I would strongly recommend that those who are interested in hunting in Zambia contact and deal directly with Alex Walker. Alex and his staff will follow-up and will go the extra mile to ensure one has a memorable hunt.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I recently returned from a buffalo hunt in Zambia. This hunt was booked at the Dallas Safari Club convention in January 1999. My friend, Dan Davis, had already booked the trip with another friend, who subsequently dropped out. I wanted to meet the outfitter, Dries Visser, first, and was able to meet him and a former client at the convention. Everything looked good, so I gave him a deposit.

We arrived in the Luangwa River valley area on August 8, and learned that we were not hunting with Dries Visser because he had lost his lease in the area. He then sold the contract to the new lessee, Safari Expeditions Zambia, owned by Alex Walker. Mr. Walker was not even aware of the terms of our contract, and asked me for my copy, which I gave him. We also learned that we would not be able to hunt everything we wanted, because their permits had been reduced. Therefore, Dan and I could only get one puku, one warthog, and one waterbuck, not one each. Buffalo was the main object so we began our one on one hunt for buffalo with me hunting with Peter Bartocz, who had three years experience, he said.

On the third day, we found our buffalo, and Peter instructed me to shoot. I moved forward to a rest on a tree limb, and fired. Seconds later, Peter fired his .450 Watts from a position immediately behind me, about two feet from my left ear. I felt severe pain, and was not able to reload and fire for several seconds. Peter leaped ahead of me, chasing the buffalo and firing his .450. When the buffalo stopped in the brush I caught up and fired the finishing shots.

They sent me to a doctor in Lusaka, who said there was hearing loss, but could see no other injury. Back in Texas, I went to a specialist, who found a hole in my eardrum, and an infection in my inner ear, for which I am on antibiotics. It could heal, but some time will tell, and I will definitely be wearing a hearing aid. The specialist also said that I had some hearing loss before this injury, which I knew.

My professional hunter was excited to the extent that I have to question his qualifications. He should not have fired so quickly and should have been a calming influence in a tense situation. In this he failed, and also failed to appreciate the damage to my ear. His comment: "don't worry, it'll go away."

I hope this information helps some others to avoid my problem.

To: The Hunting Report From: Alex Walker Date: September 2, 1999 Re: Letter sent to Alex Walker by Jack Hampton

Yesterday, August 23, I went to an ear specialist in Austin, Texas, for an examination and treatment of the ear problems caused when Peter Bartooz fired his .450 Watts in my ear on my recent trip. I experienced severe pain from the blast of his gun, and was not able to get off a quick second shot.

Dr. Kemper found a hole in my ear drum resulting from this injury. In addition, the inner ear has become infected from water getting into the hole in the drum. He has prescribed antibiotics for the infection and instructed me to return on September 7 for another examination. He believes that after the infection has been corrected, the hole in the eardrum may heal itself. At present, however, there is almost no hearing in my left ear.

Please have your insurance carrier get in touch with me.

To: The Hunting Report From: Alex Walker of Safari Expeditions Zambia Limited Date: October 6, 1999 Re: Jack Hampton's Buffalo Report

Thank you for the fax dated September 13, 1999, regarding Jack Hampton's complaint. I'm sorry for not replying sooner but I too was in Lupande when Jack was there and only returned on Monday, October 4, 1999.

I was actually in camp the day Dan Davis & Jack Hampton arrived as I was hunting with two German clients who were just finishing their successful buffalo safari. My clients and I noticed that Jack was suffering from poor hearing when we were trying to talk with him at the dinner table, having to shout to be heard, and Jack himself admits that he had "some hearing loss before" in his report to you!

My clients and I left the day after but I stayed at the Wildlife Camp Lodge in the Lower Lupande hunting block to allow Dan, Jack and their PH's to continue their hunt with the camp to themselves. Two days after Jack shot his buffalo he and Peter Bartosz his professional hunter, came to the Wildlife Camp to ask if the hunters could take a waterbuck off our annual quota of four animals, as these are usually reserved only for classic safaris, and as we had two remaining I agreed to let them hunt one waterbuck between the two buffalo hunters. Our buffalo hunts are for one cape buffalo, which is included in the hunt costs, with additional animals "subject to availability".

I asked Jack if he had his buffalo, and he said yes he'd shot it two days ago, and I asked if he enjoyed the hunt, and how many shots it took to kill it. He said he was happy and that he fired several shots and Peter had fired as well, the exact number from each I can't recall, as it wasn't an issue. At NO TIME did Jack mention anything to me about hearing loss or blaming Peter for having to shoot???. I am therefore surprised that he didn't mention this to me when he had the opportunity as we sat and had tea and coffee together???.

I only heard that Jack was accusing Peter of shooting at his buffalo from Dan Davis when he too came by the Wildlife Camp at the end of the hunt. Dan then said that Jack was experiencing some hearing loss, and had an ear infection, and that Jack was annoyed that Peter had shot at his buffalo.

I questioned Peter about having to shoot at Jack's buffalo and mentioned to him that Jack had complained about that to Dan. Peter described the whole hunt, and mentioned that Jack "having an old ear problem" suffered from apparent disorientation every time he fired his own rifle, and noticed this as early as the sitting in session the day they arrived. Peter said that each time Jack fired he became confused, and took some time to recover. Peter also told me that they had found the buffalo only a few hundred yards from the Lusangazi River, which forms the boundary with the National Park. Peter said he got Jack into position and sat him down to take a steady shot. After the first shot the buffalo took off towards the park, which can be expected, and Peter shouted to Dan to "shoot again". Dan suffering from disorientation once again was still seated as the buffalo was running away towards the Park. Peter realizing that Dan was unable to shoot again, and realizing that the buffalo was going to escape "wounded and lost" was forced to fulfill his obligations by LAW and try to stop the buffalo escaping. National Parks and Wildlife law states that the professional hunter must take all possible action to stop a DANGEROUS animal from escaping wounded". Peter said he ran forward to the side and well in front and of Jack and fired. That I would expect him to have done under the circumstances, and it is his responsibility to act as such under the circumstances. The shot apparently turned the buffalo away from the Park back into the GMA, and was what Peter had hoped it would do. Peter then said he got Jack to his feet, and once he was re-orientated he took Jack to follow up and kill the buffalo. During the buffalo hunt Jack fired his own rifle "without any hearing protection" on several occasions. If any hearing damage occurred when hunting the buffalo it could have easily have resulted from his own firing!!!.

We get some hunters who tell the professional hunters not to shoot at their buffalo under any circumstances, but they often do not realize the punishment a buffalo can absorb and still escape wounded, nor appreciate our OBLIGATION under the LAW.

I see nothing wrong in the way Peter Bartosz reacted considering the circumstances, and find it unusual for Jack not to mention it to me personally when he had ample opportunity if he indeed had a complaint. Also to blame Peter Bartosz for any hearing damage when he admits himself that he had prior hearing damage before the safari, and considering he was not wearing any hearing protection, and fired his own big rifle many times during the week seems inconceivable.

There is nothing to prove that Peter's rifle had caused any damage to Jack Hampton's hearing, but more likely his own firearm, but one wonders why Jack "having prior hearing damage" which was apparent to my clients and I as well, did not take any precautions against any further damage, knowing he was hunting with heavy recoiling and loud muzzle blast rifles?

When Jack arrived in Lusaka he complained to Mrs. Fiona Dunn (our representative there), that he had a discharge from his ear, and she took him to see Dr. Bush who could find nothing wrong with his eardrum, but that he had an ear infection. Mrs. Fiona Dunn did this as a service to the client who was complaining of an ear infection.

I appreciate that the Hunting Report has to follow up all and every complaint, but I think there is a hidden agenda in this one! I would welcome your opinion of how Peter Bartosz reacted considering the above statement and circumstances, which I personally verified with the trackers in private, and to your views on Jack Hampton's complaint.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Alistar Gellatly has twenty years of experience in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Sudan. He is an excellent judge of game. He knows how to hunt cats, both leopards and lions. He prides himself in getting his hunters the game desired and the trophy quality you want.

The GMA is 7,000 square kilometer (1.75 million acres) and borders the North Luangwa National Park. The Luangwa River flows through the middle of the GMA. There are several small fishing villages along the river. The head game scout is doing his best to reduce poaching in the area. He constantly has patrols out in the field. I think the only poaching remaining in the area is subsistence poaching.

While we were there, the grasses were just beginning to be burned. The tall grass was over 12 feet tall and made it difficult to hunt plains game. Very few of the waterholes were dry and the plains game was scattered. At the end of the hunt, most of the grass was burned and many of the water holes were dried. Spotting game was a lot easier.

I'd hunt the area again with Alistar. Zambia markets itself as "Real Africa" and this place is an excellent example of "Real Africa." The roads are basically dirt tracks and many times you'll just drive through the bush looking for a specific waterhole.

Twelve volt batteries are used for lights. The batteries are charged using photocells. At night you listen to hippos, leopards, lions, etc. We had elephants come through camp one night. Lions are baited using hippo, buffalo or plains game. I spent four nights in the lion blinds so we could definitely determine the quality of lions on the bait. In the twelve days the lions ate two hippos, one wildebeest, and one buffalo.
