HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I would like to add the following comments to my enclosed hunt report.
This is my second hunt with Sybie Mostert. He is a true professional and is first very concerned with his clients enjoying their safari. Next, he is extremely concerned with his clients taking trophy class animals. On my first trip with Sybie, we passed 15 to 26 impala rams before we ever even looked at one with earnest.
The kudu hunt was very tough because of thick bush and high temperatures in September in the Northern Province. Despite this, Hannes Els, my PH for the kudu hunt worked very hard to find a trophy bull and stalk it very carefully to try and get a good shot. This hunt was on a good property with plenty of chances at big kudu.
The nyala hunt was the highlight of the hunt. When we got to Natal, it was raining. It rained for the first day, but we hunted anyway. It was very muddy on the second day, but we hunted despite this difficulty. I had a shot at a 28-bull, but the bullet hit a wire on a fence and was deflected, a miss. Continuing our hunt on the third day, we saw numerous nyala bulls in the 24- to 26-inch range, but Sybie passed them all. He kept saying: "too small; we can do better." His persistence paid off mid morning when the sun came out, and nyala were everywhere. We saw a nice bull on a hillside and were able to take him after a 10-minute stalk. He measured 28 3/4 inches and was very old. Sybie's determination to find a true trophy bull is noteworthy. I can't recommend Sybie highly enough for nyala hunting in Natal. We saw a large number of nyala bulls, many of which would have made the record book. The trophy bulls did not stand still for very long so the hunt was quite difficult as the bush was very thick on this concession. Sybie's persistence and determination paid off in an old, mature trophy bull.
The gemsbok hunt was on Sybie's personal farm in the Northwest province. After hunting for a full day, we saw a bull that was very large in body. He was the largest one in the herd by at least 20-30 percent. His left horn however was deformed and curved down significantly toward the bull's left shoulder. I knew when I saw him he was the bull I wanted even though he did not have the longest horns of the group. Sybie insisted not to shoot this bull because he was not of the trophy class he wanted me to take. We discussed this for over five minutes before I convinced him this was the gemsbok I wanted because of his unique deformity. After a 40-minute stalk, I took the bull at 50 yards. His right horn is 33 inches and his left horn is 28.5 inches. An interesting note, his left testicle was huge and his right testicle was very small and shriveled up. Again, Sybie insisted I not take this bull but allowed me my wish as the client.
My priorities for this safari were kudu, nyala, gemsbok, waterbuck and warthog, in that order I saw several waterbuck, one 30 inches. When I tried to get a shot on this one, I was looking into the sun, and it blacked out my Leupold scope with too much light. It wasn't my day to take a waterbuck. Several hunters from Spain had preceded me earlier in the year and had shot a very large number of warthogs, especially the really nice ones. We saw many warthogs, but not one that Sybie was happy with me shooting. This was not a high priority, so it was not a great disappointment to me.
Sybie runs a first class operation, is extremely knowledgeable and proficient, and is very conscientious about his clients' well being and the trophy quality of the animals his clients harvest. I recommend Sybie with no hesitation. This trip included a great deal of driving around the country to take kudu, nyala and gemsbok in three different provinces. Sybie worked hard to keep the drives comfortable and interesting with history lessons and facts and trivia about various game animals. The accommodations were very adequate to exceptional and the food was outstanding. Even though I walked very long distances every day, I gained weight on this safari. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me toll free at 888-650-2237 about booking a hunt with SJ Mostert African Safaris.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
This report is specific to the Pongola Concession in Natal hunted with Sybie Mostert. I was hunting with a couple in their 70's who hunt with traditional muzzleloaders. He has rather strict dietary limitations. The Mosterts went a long way out of their way to accommodate Bill, much more than necessary. The food was excellent and more than plentiful.
Pongola is a hunting preserve in Natal which is probably best known for its tiger fish fishing located on a large lake adjacent to the border of Swaziland. The place is huge. It also contains all the "Big 6" except lion. I think it adds to the hunt experience to see elephant tracks and dung piles while you are a-field. The lake and waterways hold crocodiles and hippos. Warthogs feed on the lawn by day and hippos by night.
We booked this concession specifically for nyala and warthog. Any other species taken would just be a bonus. There were hundreds of warthog but very few quality old males. Pat W. shot a great specimen while out stalking impala. Bill W. saw another good boar but passed on the shot. Unfortunately, I was not so fortunate. We saw nyala bulls every day.
I shot a nice one the evening of the first day. Of course, I would see three 28-inch plus bulls at very close ranger after I had taken my bull. Bill W. missed an opportunity to take the best bull of the trip with a misfire. The humidity was a problem for the muzzleloaders. The biggest problem with nyala is not shooting a good one. The problem is pursuing an even better specimen.
There is a good density of common reedbuck. Good trophy quality with the odd real bruiser. I hunted one such animal twice. I saw him close but no real shot opportunity.
There are good numbers of animals here such as impala and blue wildebeest but I did not see any really good trophies. My impala is a minimum score SCI book head and looked to be about the best we could take.
Probably typical of South Africa, the lodge is very nice and the view spectacular. The game processing facility was very modern. The staff at Pongola does a good job and knows their stuff. I was constantly amazed at the ability of the trackers to spot game and evaluate trophies.
Mostert uses a wide range of concessions each suitable for different purposes. As always, it is very important to have a clear understanding of just what type of hunt you desire. Hunting versus collecting, limitations and special considerations.
Sybie's rates are very reasonable. He works hard and is a real pleasure to hunt with. I am negotiating a second hunt with him at this time.
P.S. South African Airways was the pits. The stewards didn't even pick up the trash/service after the dinner meal. Hours of no presence and no service. Ugly is the word.
