Some general infomation on travelling in Zimbabwe i travelled by road with two friends from Johannesburg to Harare and then on to Russ Brooms hunting concession next to Lake Kariba. We had no problems along the way, encountering only four road blocks one of which was in South Africa. The only place to cause concern was the border crossing at Beit Bridge. It was absolute chaos, luckily we had a contact that got us all through quickly and efficiently without him it could have taken over six hours. Day to day living for your average Zimbabwean is becomeing increasingly difficult. The lack of basic food stuffs was far more evident this year than last with most of the shops having closed and those that are open have very limited stock. This is all down to the government price fixing goods bellow production cost, causing all the producers to export in order to get a fair market price. Fuel and inflation is the other main problem. With the price of fuel going from $650k to $950k in only two days, and inflation increasing daily. comunication is also becomming harder as everyone is reliant on the mobile phone network which is running at maximum capacity. None of these observations directly effected us as Russ Broom's team made sure we were well looked after and never in need of anything. Despite all these hardships the country is experiencing we at no point felt in any danger and found all the people we met along the way very helpfull and happy we were visiting their country, in fact the exact opposite of what you experience when travelling in South Africa.

This was a hunt I'd rescheduled several times and I ended up going for too short a period, too late in the season, at a camp not ideally suited for short buffalo hunts. |

No |
| Why? |
Russ Broom Safaris is an absolutely first rate company, I'll hunt with them again, but this hunt was too short and too late in the year, and this area pretty obviously suffers from a serious poaching problem. We saw both evidence of poacher and actual poachers on the concession. However, my "no" recommendation is conditional. The area has plenty of big elephants. I saw several and another hunter took a large one, 50 pounds plus, while I was in camp. |

|
I'd hunted very successful with Russ Broom Safaris in 2002 and had planned on going last year, but had to reschedule. This trip was put together on the fly, and instead of hunting three buffalo for 10 days, I ended up doing five days in Zimbabwe with my younger brother, who hadn't hunted before, and then five days in South Africa, guided by Russ father Geoff, with a non-hunting girlfriend. As a result, I ended up going later in the year than I'd wanted and spending less time hunting buffalo than I'd orignally planned, But I knew my girlfriend was not up to hunting in Zim and a cushy ranch hunt near Port Elizabeth would be more her speed and save me much grief. (It did). Conditions in the limited areas of Zim. I saw had deteriorated markedly since my last trip in 2002 and drastically since 1996 when I last visited before that. Vic falls was a ghost town, and Kabuba, while a nice campe, well staffed and run, was noticeably thin on game except elephant. It is easy in that circumstance to blame the safari company or the PH. However, the company and the PH did everything possible to accommodate my shifting schedule. Jim Levenderis, the PH, moved heaven and earth to get my younger brother onto two shootable bulls in five days of hunting. My brother Ken missed the first and we took the second. He also took a baboon and a nice duiker, and we saw elephant and lots of sign of elephant, as well as fresh buffalo sign every day. The concession borders a park and so, when harried, the buffalo head there. However, the area has been hit hard by poaching. Snares and other evidence of poaching abound. We found a snared bush pig and even the buffalo my brother shot had a broken three strand snar on its neck. Similarly, plains game had been more abundant at the nearby camp I'd hunting in 2002, which I must assume is due to the poaching. In short, three factors worked in concert to make this part of the hunt more difficult than it might ideally have been: my shifting schedule, the abbreviated time to hunt buffalo, and the denuded state of wildlife at Kabuba. Two of the three were directly my fault and the third the safari company could only control in a limited way, given the sorry state of that country. So, my "would not recommend" for this hunt is conditional, I will enthusiastically hunt with Russ Broom Safaris again, probably in Zambia - top to bottom, the company is absolutely first rate. To watch how hard they worked to make this right was worth the price of admission, but they really were fighting an uphill battle here. There may be other camps where the game situation is better, and certainly elephant hunting would seem a very good bet at Kabuba, but, in all candor, a short buffalo hunt there would be enough.

Russ Broom Safaris, Jack Atcheson & Sons, and Gracy Travel all worked beautifully together to create a perfect experience. If I could change anything it would only be to have hunted longer. I will go back to Africa, hopefully several times, and when I do, I will go back with Russ Broom Safaris. The campsites and food were as phenomenal as the hunting and Gavin Rorke was an excellent professional hunter and host. I left Africa with awesome memories, fantastic trophies, and a new friend...........perfect!

We were quite apprehensive about our trip to Zimbabwe with political climate. We were taken care of at every turn by our host and could not have been more hospitably treated, even the government officials seemed happy to see us! We will return if the political climate allows, with the same group, PH if possible. This was our first trip to Zimbabwe.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
As a follow-up to my report, I think it is very important for readers to keep in mind that my report was based on only a 10-day hunt. While the truth of the matter for my hunt was few buffalo in the area, as Russ points out in his reply, the whole truth is that buffalo moved into the area within days of my leaving Kabuba Camp. The only real negative aspect of my hunt was encountering more people in the area than I believe is normal, however, it had minimal impact on the success of my safari. I hope all readers of The Hunting Report use it as I do, looking at a compilation of all reports about an outfitter gives a better picture. I believe Russ Broom to be one of the elite outfitters in the hunting world today. Based on my short hunt in the Kabuba area, I would be hesitant to return for a buffalo hunt, but would highly recommend it for an elephant hunt. If I return to Zimbabwe, I will hunt with Russ Broom Safaris.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW DOCUMENT ----------------------------------------------------
Rebuttal from Michelle Garcia of Jack Atcheson & Sons, Inc.
Keith Atcheson is away hunting at this time. We saw that Scott DeMars filed a complaint with The Hunting Report concerning his safari in Zimbabwe last year with Russ Broom. Below is the Hunt Questionnaire he filled out for our company upon his return:
Your Name: Scott DeMars Your Address: 865 Bluegrass Dr W, Billings, MT 59106 Tel. 406-652-9356; 406-256-0077. Fax. 406-256-3069 E-mail: demarsdpm@msn.com
Outfitter's Name: Russ Broom Dates Hunted: July 2 - July 11, 2004 Approximate game seen (all species): Kabula - elephant, few buffalo (no mature bulls). Kwekwe - two sable, eland, one wildebeest, many zebra, kudu, impala, baboons, duiker and few warthog.
Were you successful in taking the species you were licensed to take? Buffalo, sable, eland, wildebeest, zebra, impala, baboon.
In your opinion, what are the strongest points of the company you hunted with? Well-organized camps, good PH's and trackers. All details attended to.
The weakest? They seemed not to have previously been aware of the extent of poaching and numbers of squatters in hunting area.
What was your general opinion of your guides? Camps? Very good, couldn't ask for more, good effort and knowledge of hunting and game.
What was your general opinion of the hunt? Please keep in mind the weather, your physical condition, time in the field, trends in game populations, and the species hunted. Game populations were very disappointing. I was very fortunate to take all the animals I did; in general I was pleased with hunt, but could not recommend it for a future hunt.
Which travel agency did you use for your travel arrangements? Were you satisfied with their services? Gracy- excellent. Eleven airplanes used, no problems at all with travel or customs.
What information could we send you concerning future hunts? (Alaska, Africa, Argentina, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Mexico, Canada, Russia, Asia, Australia, New Zealand): Elephant, buffalo, leopard, kudu in Tanzania. Botswana or Namibia, buffalo to Australia. New Zealand.
Please include any additional comments you may have: Elephant appears to be the only good game to hunt at Kabuba Camp. Kwe Kwe has huntable numbers of eland, zebra, impala and kudu only. Poor for sable. Russ Broom Safaris is an excellent outfit, but you must be careful of where you send hunters in Zimbabwe, game seems to be rapidly declining. PHs were surprised at low numbers seen.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I recently came back from a successful 14-day buffalo/leopard hunt in Zimbabwe. This was with Russ Broom Safaris. I hunted in the Kabuba Camp just south of Chizarira National Park. The highlights of the hunt are too numerous to list. On day number three, I took a large SCI 110 inch buffalo. I dropped him with a spine shot after a 1 1/2 hour stalk early in the morning. We subsequently used the buffalo for bait and on the seventh day of the hunt, after sitting in a blind for 5 1/4 hours, I was able to take a 6 foot 10 inch leopard. The SCI skull measured 14 3/4 inches.
My hunter was George Parkin. George is an experienced Zimbabwe professional hunter. Prior to the land invasions, he ran an extremely successful plains game and leopard hunting operation, that hunted in close to 800,000 acres of different ranges throughout Zimbabwe. It was a pleasure to hunt with George again. I had hunted with him three years ago, on a plains game hunt at his ranch. His ranch has subsequently been lost to squatter acitvity. The camp was clean and the food quite good. George is a spectacularly successful leopard hunter and likes to hunt them out of tent blinds (as opposed to tree blinds that are often used in this area). Georges knowledge of game habits and particularly of leopard is quite astounding. If I was to schedule a hunt with Russ Broom, I would certainly ask for George's availability for leopard and all dangerous game. I hope to be able to return again to Zimbabwe and would look forward to hunting with Russ Broom and George Parkin again.
This hunt was booked through Bill Williamson. As usual, Col. Williamson was extremely helpful and detail oriented. I would hesitate to use anyone but Bill Williamson (as his numerous other clients would attest to).

Of my four safaris to Africa, this one was the best. The camp and equipment were in excellent condition. The food was the best we have had on safari. The staff was well trained and attentive. It is clear, even with the current problems in Zimbabwe, that Russ Broom Safaris is committed to delivering a first-class safari. The PH, Rory Muil, is both an excellent hunter and excellent host. No attention to detail was overlooked in making our safari a comfortable experience. Rory Muil is an "old school" style PH who conducts himself in a professional manner at all times. This was our second time to stay at Afton Guest House in Johannesburg. www.aftonguesthouse.com. We stayed one night upon our arrival and another night upon our return from Zimbabwe. Afton Guest House hosts hundreds of hunters each year and the personal service is unmatched. This was also our second time to use Linda Carroll of Falcon Travel, Inc. She has provided us with superb and timely service in booking all our travel arrangements to Africa. The price of this hunt was a special reduced rate that I became aware of through www.accuratereloading.com.

Game of all sorts except elephant rare. Concession resembled a rural slum devoid of wildlife and with ready evidence of regular poaching. Many crop raiding elephant in the 15-35 pound range. Most common living beings were goats, cattle, natives and dogs. Saw less wildlife in 18 days than I have in any 24 hour period of time elsewhere in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
After direct talks with agent Colonel Bill and Russ Broom, they knew I'd hunted Zimbabwe three times and was still keen on a leopard and a bull elephant with ivory around five feet in length and or weight approximately 50 pounds. I was told in plain English that on a 15 day hunt this was to be expected as highly probable. Russ stated over the phone that I was in "realistic contention" for a 55-60 pound bull. Zebra and buffalo were to "ice the cake". Being experienced I booked for 18 days to be sure. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
First elephant tracked in heavy cover. Shooting a buffalo oncoming at 15 paces. Happened while tracking elephant. Was one of only four buffalo seen while out on foot. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
This area is very hilly and absolutely requires real fitness. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
No |
| Why? |
PH Gavin Rorke was great-motivated, hard working, experienced, considerate and pleasant. Everyone in Russ Broom's organization was in fact great. I simply was sold a $22,000 bill of goods. The wildlife and trophy quality and observeable wildlife simply were not there. These guys knew I'd been on safari previously and were aware of my interests and previous experiences. |

| If Seeking Restitution, What is Sought? |
What could I seek? I was promised attention and a goodwill gesture that never materialized--see below. I was initially so annoyed that I told them to keep my buffalo. Shortly thereafter I changed my mind but Coloniel Bill said it couldn't be shipped due to paperwork-though paid for. I'd that like head. |

I immediately called Colonel Bill to relay my experience and dissappointment. He soon after mailed and called to say that Russ and he felt bad and that my results were an abomination. Initially they detailed that Russ would like to have me back and at a reduced rate, which I felt was gracious. Subsequent phone conversations left off on the note that Russ and Colonel Bill would contact me during the convention and try to put things together. I never heard from them despite providing three phone numbers and my e-mail address. I held off on this report for a year because I am not interested in damaging someone's reputation, but this was a truly unexcusable situation and way below what I was lead to expect. Any parties related or unrelated to this matter are free to contact me.
Response From Colonel Bill Williamson
The following is in response to the report filed by Mr. Gordon Campbell on a safari I booked for him with Russ Broom Safaris in Zimbabwe in 2003. This response is from both Russ Broom and Colonel Bill Williamson. It is very unfortunate that Gordon was unsuccessful on his safari and did not take leopard nor an elephant. It is the policy of both Russ Broom Safaris and Fair Chase, Limited that the client is always correct. Therefore, we do not dispute any of the claims made by Mr. Campbell. We both readily admit that we told Mr. Campbell that we believed that he had an excellent chance for both leopard and elephant on this safari. We stand behind that claim. I do feel it is only fair, however, that we point out certain facts. During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Russ Broom Safaris harvested a total of 26 trophy elephant bulls. Four of them were in excess of 60 pounds a side, the largest being 67 pounds. Twelve were between 50 and 55 pounds, eight between 40 and 50, and two between 35 and 40.
In those same two seasons Russ Broom Safaris also took 24 male leopard with a success rate of about 80 percent. Several of the cats exceeding 180 pounds in weight.
The company also took 96 buffalo bulls in those two seasons, the average size being 38 inches. About a third of the bulls were over 40 inches and two made 48 inches. Company policy is to not to shoot bulls out of the herds which means that many of our buffalo are over their prime and, consequently, their horns are slightly worn down. We feel this is a sound conservation policy that perpetuates our herd estimated by Zimbabwe Parks Department at over 5,000 animals.
Russ Broom Safaris consistently takes some of the best quality trophies in Zimbabwe. Generally the terrain in the concession is quite rugged. The majority of hunting is done on foot with animals being taken at close quarters in thick bush. The hunting is hard but very rewarding due to the consistently high trophy quality that has been taken over the last twelve years.
Mr. Campbell hunted in April, which dependent on the rainy season, is generally one of the best times for both elephant and leopard. Elephant hunting is conducted closer to the native villages at that time of the year because the majority of elephant are crop raiding. We agree with Mr. Campbell that there is not a lot of plains game in the area that he hunted. However, this area represents only a small fraction of our concession. Had Mr. Campbell taken his elephant, or elected to move camps, we would have transferred him to another part of our concession which has no human habitation and a good concentrations of plains game.
Russ Broom Safaris does not guarantee success on elephant although we still maintain that the possibilities are good. In fact we have two elephant in the 60 pound range so far this season (2004, out of four taken to date). Elephant hunting is both challenging, and more often that not rewarding. However, true elephant hunters realize that there is a chance they will go home disappointed especially when looking for an elephant of over fifty pounds. The old African classics indicate that even over a hundred years ago the majority of elephant taken were between 35 and 40 pounds.
Although many clients take both elephant and leopard on a safari it can be difficult hunting. Leopard hunting and elephant hunting are often in direct conflict with each other for both time and territory. We are pleased that Mr. Campbell was satisfied with all other aspects of his safari. It is unfortunate that last year the hunting in the early part of the season was uncharacteristically poor. Later, in the season the hunting turned out to be vey good. This is a fair chase hunt and we, unfortunately, have no control over the movement of game, particularly elephant, at that time of the year. We are dependent on weather and migration patterns much like hunting elk in the Rockies.
Fair Chase, Limited has booked safaris with Russ Broom Safaris for many years, twelve years in the Bonga concession. As this is written, in May 2004, Fair Chase Limited has already had four repeat parties of clients hunting with the Brooms this season, two of which also hunted in with the Brooms 2003. Two of the parties are still in the field while the first two parties took two elephant and a good Tom leopard. The Brooms have taken a total of four leopard so far in 2004.
No one is more disappointed than Russ Broom or Bill Williamson when a safari does not go as planned. With Gordon Campbell it is was particularly disappointing as he had told us he had hunted Zimbabwe three times previously without taking an elephant or leopard.
We are still offering Mr. Campbell a replacement hunt this year, or in the future, should he wish to consider it. Our goal is to satisfy Mr. Campbell's desire to take an elephant and leopard, and have a good safari. Unfortunately, our correspondence seems to have broken down. Incidentally, if Mr. Campbell was at the SCI convention, neither Russ Broom nor Bill Williamson were aware he was there.
This report was compiled by both Russ Broom, Russ Broom Safaris and Colonel Bill Williamson, Fair Chase Limited, and represents our joint response to Mr. Campbell's report.

Sought But Not Taken: |
Sitatunga - Availability: I needed a bigger scope, low light conditions. I did not allow enough days in swamp, only three. |
|
Sable - Availability: I passed up several between 40 to 45 inches, going for a monster. Also, resident hunting pressure during the last week of the hunt in these two cases. |
|
Eland - Availability: Lack of time due to lion hunt. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Game
Condition Comments: |
Excellent areas overall. Game in good shape and quantity. After September 1, 1999, resident hunters are allowed in Mulobezi and are experiencing considerable pressure after September 19, 1999 to the end of the hunt. Pushing game animals out of open areas into bush. Outfitter is trying to get all resident hunting stopped in area. Be prepared for the tsetse flies. This is a wild concession area! Part of a true safari experience. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Mulobezi resident hunting starts September 1, 1999. Resident hunting started appoximately September 15, 1999, but there was only supposed to be one resident at a time. However there was four areas full plus three camps. Push game into bush the last four to five days of the hunt but we already had a very good bag. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Great week long hunt for a specific lion I missed early on. Slept out in blinds, many changes in tactics, great ethics and excellent lion. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
7mm/ 300 magnum with excellent optics for cats/statunga and heavy rifle. Only book two areas at most. We were also booked for Kafue Flats but skipped it due to logistics and time. Also, Kafue Flats lodge is no longer open. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Go in July or August. We had to go in September due to previous hunting commitments in Canada. Better for cats and no resident hunters. |
