SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
It was the rainy season which I chose as the Tanzanian hunting season had been extended from Dec. 31 to March 31 for the 1st time since 1997. The rains caused the dry rivers to flood and had to swim rivers to hunt leopard 3 times and to get home the last night, the rains were a blessing and a curse as it was difficult to get around but the animals were coming out of Terangirie National Park. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Swimming flooded river 3 times to get my leopard, up close and personal with 6 Elephants over 60Lb. before turning them down as I wanted 70lb min. Ivory. Taking a 45" Buff at 25 yrd with my 500NE double. Having the Lion in my scope on Day 19 and letting him walk. I'm very happy with this decision. I hunt Lion so my $'s will give them value and ensure their survival and they will not be wiped off the face of the earth as vermin as human encroachment causes conflict with livestock and people, which will surely happen. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Be prepared to work hard if you hunt this time of year. Great effort equally great rewards. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Harpreet Brar's Rungwa Safaris and now with the acquisition of Miobo Safaris and Tanzania Bundu Safaris places him with premiere areas, which are well mangaged and fair chace and ethical hunting and the taking of only older animals is allowed. Harpreet sets his standards for the preservation of the species and runs a very ethical hunt and a set of standards which are strictly adhered to. |

|
This was my 9th African Safari and my 1st Hunt for cats. Experiencing the restrictions, and frustration and the highs and lows, disappointments and extreme excitement of when a plan comes together made this the most complete experience of my Hunting career. We saw lion take down a Buffalo we were both stalking, several leopards, many lions, and a plethora of Plains game and carnivors. I had this hunt vidoed and will be able to relive it for the rest of my Life. Can't wait until I return Next Year, I still need that Long Tanzania Ivory.

Condition Comments: |
I injured my back and had to leave, however, we had a bongo displaying a large track at a saline nightly but I never got to sit for him. The giant forest hogs are also scarce and would need to be machan hunted as the bongo so 50 percent is to be expected, but I was confident of a shot at the bongo. The rest of the duiker and red river hog here just a matter of hunting for them, as we collected the 5 species I got from the savannah in 3.5 days and I only spent 1/2 day in the forest, before I injured myself. |

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
My injury was self induced but cost me the second week of my hunt. As there is only 1 flight a week to depart through Paris, I decided to play it safe and depart rather than risk a very painful week trying. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
My buffalo, which I always enjoy and the tracking display to obtain the Lord Derby eland. The most amazing I have ever seen in 12 plus Africa trips. Also my western roan was a highlight due to their rarity in the area. |

Yes |
| Why? |
This hunt is on over 300,000 hectares of private land ajoined by 200,000 hectares of concession. It is in the center of the country and Harpreet does 2 to 4 of these hunts in his offseason only. It is like hunting on a private reserve, as no other commercial hunting is done here, family only. The eland demand a lot of walking to track them, but can also be obtained with patience sitting at the salines in a machan, with little effort. The weather is very warm and the insects are prevelant. The camp is extremely well appointed as it is a private family accommodations. This is the way to do the CAR. |

The rains had started which was expected and make the Masailand species hunting easier, but made it impossible to get to the mountain camp for buffalo and elephant. |

The lesser kudu is the prospective new world record SCI, we will wait for 90 days drying and remeasure. Three of the other 6 animals are above top 25 SCI and all made the book. |

This was a great hunt for speciality species in a uniquely populated area of Tanzania and these animals can only be hunted here, the trophy quality was excellent due to management practices of limiting off take of well below government quotas. |

Harpreet Brar is a premier outfitter in Tanzania and manages his properties in a manner that produces quality trophies and will continue to do so in the future as his harvest is well below the quotas issued by the government. The camps are first class with excellent equipment and staff. I return with this outfitter every year and will continue to do so.

This is my second trip with Rungwa and not my last. Excellent and knowledgable PHs, diversified areas so you can hunt all over Tanzania and hunt all the game this country offers. All new equipment, large staffs, good trackers, very nice people. Now many I call friends. The game is abundant and of high quality and the hunting areas are real wilderness with no people, real wild Africa. |

This is a really class outfitter and I can recommend them without reservation. Excellent in every way, ask for more chicken and fish at meals before you go and you'll get it.
On November 6th, 2008 Stephen Rogers and I arrived in Dar es Salaam (Dar) to begin our 21 day Adventure with Rungwa Game Safaris in three of Tanzania's premiere hunting concessions, Rungwa, Ruhudji and Selous K-1 and K-2. We had previously hunted with Harpreet Brar's Safari Company in 2007 in these same Selous blocks and had a wonderful time and acquired some great trophies. We were back to try other sections of the country and to challenge ourselves once again in one of Africa's finest hunting destinations.
The rains had started early in Tanzania this year and the bush airstrip in Rungwa was too wet to land on. We took Harpreet's advice and gave it an extra day to dry out and flew to Arusha from Dar. The end result was that we would be delayed in starting our safari by one day. We had a great evening in Arusha which only served to wet our appetite, even more, for what we had been looking forward to for nearly two years. The "shoot anything big you see when you leave camp" full bag safari we had been looking forward to turned out to be all and more than we expected. Although cats were not on the menu everything else was fair game. "Old and Mature" was the order of the day, not score judged prior to the shot.
We arrived in Rungwa around midday of the 8th of November and immediately set our gear in assigned tents and prepared ourselves for the afternoon outing. Not more than one hour out of camp a very mature, and what turned out to be, a 38"x 9" Sable was spotted and a 220 yard shot brought it to ground for a great day one for Mike!
Day two morning had Stephen bagging a 39" x 9" Sable Bull. I took an Oribi and an East African Bush Duiker that same morning of day two. Both shots were over 200 yards and proved the Blaser R-93 in 416 Rem Mag was up to the task. A dik dik was spotted at dark and the pursuit led to a most fortunate encounter with, what proved to be a 13 ½", East African Bushbuck, which I was able to take with a quick offhand shot at 100 yards. These trackers really are good and Harpreet has an incredible set of eyes to spot and judge these animals. Stephen took a nice Warthog at dusk on day two.
Day three found us struggling to find the Roan, our other prime target in the area. Harpreet and I spotted a herd, but unfortunately it contained no mature Bulls. Stephen and Mike Angelides, his PH, passed on a couple of young Bulls they encountered. Despite the lack of Roan the day was full of excitement.
The rains continued to threaten and it became obvious the season was changing fast. Previous rainfall in the area prior to our arrival seemed to have dispersed the animals and so we decided to change camp and head to Ruhudji. It was tough to forego our search and quest for Roan, but the consensus was we should not waste any more time. Before we departed for Ruhuji, Stephen was able to take an outstanding Oribi, EA Bush Duiker and Yellow Baboon.
The conversations around the dinner table on our final evening in Rungwa were filled with talk of stalks, great shots and fine tracking by the staff. Although we found the tsetse flies to be prevalent and relentless in this area of Tanzania, there was in existence "fly free" zones within the hunting area and thankfully the camp site was one of them. November in Tanzania does present the challenge of the 100+ degree temperatures so this time of year is not for the faint hearted.
We were off on a charter flight to Ruhudji early on the morning of 12th November and it appeared we had just managed to escape an onslaught of heavy rain. On arrival in the Ruhudji camp, we were instantly made aware of what a wonderfully beautiful and remote area this was - the camp location and facilities are second to none. In my six African Safari experiences, it was truly the best and first class.
After settling into our tents in quick time, we saddled up for an afternoon hunt. I took a wonderful 15 ½" bossed 36" Buffalo Bull on a great spot and stalk and a 15 yard face on shot as we shocked the Bulls coming over a ridge. On returning to camp, we learned that Stephen had taken a classic Tanzanian 40+ inch Bull that evening as well...Ruhudji was living up to it's reputation. A good friend of ours and booking agent of a number of previous Texas and South Africa hunts, who had recommended Rungwa Game Safaris to us two years prior, Tim Macmanus, was able to accompany us on this adventure. Day five found Tim taking a 40" Buffalo Bull to full-fill a life long dream of his. I was fortunate enough to be able to share this with Tim, and will never forget the look on his face. Day six found Harpreet and myself passing on a Hippo early that morning after a considerable stalk through a beautiful swamp and a truly close encounter, which got the blood boiling. We felt a walk and stalk effort in heavy riverine bush may produce the Hippo we were looking for and while we flushed one at close range, we were never able to see the animal, but apparently we were nearly on top of him when he broke from a Korongo. A short time later, in the dense cover, Harpreet spotted a magnificent Buffalo Bull and put me into position for a snap shot. With only the neck exposed, but a Bull judged well over 40+ inches the decision to take a risky neck shot was over in an instant. In disappointment that the Bull didn't fall to the shot, my concern started in earnest. "This is the heaviest cover I have ever tracked a wounded Buffalo in" commented Harpreet, which left me questioning my decision, yet I knew the shot was on the point I aimed for. "Was that good enough?" was the only question all six of us could ask ourselves, while we tracked for the next hour.
With 100 yards covered before blood was found it soon became apparent the Bull was hit hard, but still very much alive. Copious amounts of blood with ants feeding on it were found for more than an hour of the slow careful tracking in the very heavy brush, when suddenly we found ant-less blood. This observation by Tim did not go unappreciated by any of us, and we knew we were close. Within a few yards the shape of the Bull was spotted by our Tracker, Mo and Mike. Harpreet unloaded with 470NE and 500NE respectively, but as it turned out the Bull had expired seconds before. It's amazing in these situations how small the diameter of ones esophagus can become; not to mention, the tension felt in the other parts of ones anatomy. The Bull was a 43.5 inch monster, my widest Bull to date and a true thrill to be a part of.
Both Stephen and I concentrated on trying to find an Elephant over the following days. We both spotted and stalked Bulls, but nothing "legal" was found. Stephen and his PH, moved off to a fly camp for two nights to explore an area with greater tenacity, but alas neither of our hunting groups found a shootable Bull.
I did, however, take a Reedbuck; and Stephen took a Water Buck and his second Baboon for the safari.
We had covered a lot of miles looking for Elephant and coupled with impending rain appearing to threaten this region as well, we decided to change camp again and head to the Selous where Harpreet runs safaris from his K1 and K2 blocks. Our aim was to concentrate on Elephant for the final ten days of the safari, although we still had several other animals on license.
The Selous would prove to be a rendezvous point for our friends who had booked with Harpreet for a 21 day full bag safari and a ten day safari for his brother on our recommendation. Sverre Skogen is a business associate of ours from Norway and a world class hunter and we had two great evenings together, while sharing different camps in these two great Selous blocks.
On day two in the Selous, Stephen took a great Bull Elephant with tusks of 64" and 60". It was a superb hunt lasting over two hours and culminating in Stephen taking the Bull cleanly with a side brain shot from his 416 Rigby at 30 yards. The Bull dropped instantly in an upright position landing on his tusks...it couldn't have been better.
I was able to intercept a Hippo on land early on the same morning and was quickly maneuvered in front of him and able to take the Hippo with my 470NE at ten yards as he came straight at me. This was not a charge, by any means, but that did not diminish the thrill of being in close proximity of an animal of this size; and the fulfillment of a long time dream of mine also.
In the days that followed Stephen managed a nice Hippo, two more great Dagga Boys and I took another very good Buffalo Bull from a herd. Not to mention, that we all three, Stephen, Tim and myself took great Zebra.
Stephen and I were able to take good trophy Warthog, Hartebeest and Crocodile. Stephen took two Impala, one at long range, plus Reedbuck and Baboon. He also made the shot of the Safari, some 378 yards, to bag a beautiful Eland Bull. We had both chased Eland several times over the previous week, but had no luck in securing one of these elusive and hard to hunt animals. The bull that Stephen took was taken in the same area along the Kilombero River that I had shot at and missed one a couple of days before. This was truly the adventure of a life time and we intend to return!
Sverre and his brother also had great success. Sverre shot a great Lion and although the Leopard was not grounded, it was close, but no shot taken. A great 15" East African Bushbuck, Waterbuck, two Zebra, three Hartebeest and four Buffalo as well as Hippo and Crocodile made this a true African memory for our Norwegian friends.
Tanzania is truly a hunter's paradise and under the guidance and tutelage of a class outfitter like Harpreet Brar's Rungwa Game Safaris, you can't go wrong - highly recommended as a `TRULY GREAT and WONDERFUL ADVENTURE'.

An exceptionally wet spring left a lot of water even this late. Animals were not concentrated as normal, and were very hard to hunt. These conditions may have caused an excessive amount of driving this year on the concessions and the animals were quite skiddish |

The hunter should be aware that hunting in western Tanzania is much tougher than the Selous in the late fall. The game is sparse but the quality is very high. I missed a couple of opportunities at lions. I believe the outfitter underrates this are - lions are abundant. Harpreet Brar is well-respected PH and owner and can cater to almost any hunter's needs.

Sought But Not Taken: |
Buffalo, Cape - Availability: Second cape buffalo. Rejected several old bulls because of broomed horns. Missed best chance when lion pride hunting the same herd as I, attacked a cow not 50 yards from us and stampeded herd. My wife and I wouldn't have had it any other way. |
|
Zebra - Availability: Too much water in the hills which held them way back in the bush away from the river and accessible area. Wind turned and defeated the one opportunity. Normally abundant in September or October. |
|
Warthog - Availability: These guys are so cute I couldn't shoot an average one and held out for a real trophy. Saw many average and several very large but those big ones are wary and fast. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Hunting may have been easier two months later but our schedule dictated July. Rungwa staff kept things running smooth. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Tracking four old bulls in tall, dense grass, then shooting one four times with a .375 H&H and eight times with a .470 Nitro during a 30-minute battle in which he tried to ambush us three times. (All rounds in the chest cavity).; Accidentally getting nose to nose with a hippo in dense thorn and starring him down.; Being danger close (50) yards from a cow and calf elephant in dense bush while stalking buffalo and sneaking away.; Constant exposure to flora and fauna.; Number one highlight has to be spending time with PH Georgie Ferreira and the camp staff as well as "meet and great" man in Arusha, Mr. Massawe. |
