Buffalo - Availability: Abundant, but ran out of time. Duiker - Availability: Yellow-backed duiker. Ran out of time hunting eland. Game Condition Comments: Limited eland population in first camp. Major Game Animals Taken: Bongo - Availability: Average - Trophy Size: 28.5 inches. Sitatunga - Availability: Average - Trophy Size: Forest sitatunga. 26 inches. Duiker - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Yellow backed duiker. 5.7 inches. Hog, Red River - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Silver Medal. Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: Game was in good shape and we saw no signs of poaching or poaching activity. The PH's in the areas have hired private game scouts to chase the poachers back to the Sudan and it seems to be working in the area I was in. The camp manager that was killed by the poachers was an unfortunate incident but by no means are the poachers coming after clients/PH's and I would recomment Rudy's area to anyone. The whole incident has been blown way out of proportion in my opinion. Call me for more details on the whole deal. I would be way more concerned for my safety in Zimbabwe than in the CAR.

Problems of Hunt: The rains were a bit spotty. Highlights of Hunt: I had previously taken Bongo and Eland with Rudy during the course of three prior trips. In the most recent issue (May, Vol. 26, #5), I noted the U.S. State Department bulletin you referenced in regards to Americans traveling to the Central African Republic. Although I don't have the vast resources available to our State Department, I would like to make a simple observation as someone who was in the country a little over a week ago. Bangui looks a bit tired and the infrastructure could benefit from an overhaul, but the feeling one gets around the airport and downtown district is one of lethargy. Yes, hang on to your wallet and watch your bags, but an overthrow by rebels? No one was talking about governmental instability on the streets or in the hunting camps either. I realize that you were trying to do your usual good job of informing your readers as you went to press and it's always better to error on the side of caution. Who could ignore the U.S. State Dept.?! Before the next issue is published, I would urge you to get some input from the outfitters themselves, as they would have a better feel of what's really going on in the capitol. This was my fourth hunting trip to Bangui and there was certainly nothing ominous that I picked up on. Frankly, I would be more hesitant to try a hunt in Zimbabwe than the C.A.R. right now. (1991) and in Congo (1997) and we didn't use them on this month's hunt in the C.A.R. either. As far as I am concerned, it's the most rewarding way to go about it, but I also understand the pressure to produce that a P.H. on a 14-day hunt is under. As long as an Outfitter tells a prospective client how he runs his operation before they book, the hunter can make an informed decision.
