My third safari with Guy Whittall. As with the previous hunts everything was excellent. Shot my leopard on the 9th evening. No doubt the hard work, patience and knowledge of Guy Whittall and his staff helped to insure my success. Looking forward to my next safari with Roger Whittall Safaris. |

ROGER WHITTALL SAFARIS SCORES ANOTHER TOP-TEN! Coutada 14, Mozambique October 6, 2011 Guy Whittall, son of the famous Roger Whittall whose eponymous Zimbabwe-based operation is well known to the hunting fraternity, guided Canadian bowhunter David Little to a record book Bushpig in the Zambezi delta. On his first hunt in Mozambique, Little spotted the bushpig at 150 yards, rooting amongst some undergrowth. By scalloping around the pig, he and Whittall set themselves up just downwind of the pig. As luck would have it the Bushpig fed toward the hunters, moving at them head-on, denying the bowhunter any shot. At 15 yards, however, the animal veered just enough to allow a ¾ shot. It was recovered after about 200 yards. This was day one of Littles 7-day buffalo hunt in Nyati Safaris area, Coutada 14 in Mozambique. The pig measured 19 4/16 SCI and 9 5/8 Rowland Ward. It will be #4 in the SCI Trophy Book for Bushpigs taken with a bow. On the last day, Little killed a dagga boy. This is a story for another time. (Note to editor: I will file another report on the Cape Buffalo hunt once it has been measured.)

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
It was late September 2010, essentially the end of the hunting season, and our destination was a camp owned and operated by Roger Whittall Safaris (www.humani.cc) on what is officially known as Humani Estates. It is situated in the Save Valley Conservancy in Chiredzi, Zimbabwe south west of the confluence of the Turgwe and Save rivers close to the Mozambique border - South Eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe. After a few very enjoyable days at the Victoria Falls Hotel to adjust to the time difference and settle in to the new culture of Zimbabwe, we flew to Harare and were met by our PH Butch Coaton (butchcoatonsafaris.com) who met us plan-side and ushered us through immigration and customs. Butch had come most highly recommended by two of our friends over the past couple of years and we finally met him at the 2010 SCI convention in Reno and booked for September. He seemed very competent, professional, and a bit reserved but we knew the truth and were delightfully rewarded once we got out of the big city lights. We felt as safe in Zimbabwe as we do in any large city in the U.S. Only three times were we hustled for money by uniformed personnel. Twice at the Victoria Falls Airport and once at the Harare Airport. Only one of those times was it blatant and a bit uncomfortable at Victoria Falls Airport when a customs official was making an issue of us flying from there via Johannesburg to Harare with the rifles. A big smile and acting a little slow got the rifles on the plane with us and our money still in my wallet. Truth be told, if we hadnt been approached for some extra fees, I think I would have been a bit disappointed. Nonetheless, I would recommend having a meet and greet in Johannesburg as they will have you complete all the paperwork for the rifles and walk you through immigration and customs.
For Zimbabwe, at the request of our PH, I downloaded the rifle import forms from the internet and had 10 copies already filled out sans the signature and date&the extras did come in handy. After a pleasant evening and morning at the Whittalls home in Harare, we were off to the airport to catch the charter from Harare to Humani. The flight was uneventful and a lot quicker than the five-plus hour drive back after the hunt, but I would recommend the drive if you havent been in that part of the continent. Although there were several check points on the drive back, we were only stopped at one to check the rifles and everyone was friendly.
The establishment of the Conservancy itself is a remarkable story of foresightedness and tenacity of a consortium of several ranching families. Together the Conservancy spans over one million acres of contiguous properties with the primary goal of conserving the flora and fauna of Africa for self-sustainment. Although most of the farming and ranching production ceased on the Conservancy with the removal of the intervening fences, Humani still carries on the rich tradition for which Zimbabwe was once famous - profitable agriculture in the form citrus, sorghum, and corn. The area is relatively flat with several different ecosystems including the riparian ribbon along the Turgwe River that is quite dense in some areas and a very interesting mopane and palm forest. Most of Humani is veld and game is abundant everywhere.
We had booked for 14 days with the main goal of a cape buffalo. It took the first three days of tracking buffalo before we found what we were looking for. A very old animal, with various estimates of his age at twelve years and up. His horns were very swept back with the tips well below the bosses, which measured 17 inches, and were quite worn. He was narrow by Roland Ward standards but very nice by SCI standards and the quintessential trophy by current standards of an old, massively horned, non-breeding animal. He was most likely the oldest of the seven in the small bachelor herd and Butchs prediction of catching them out in the open in the river bed in the early morning on the third day ensured success.
The two days prior found us in and out of buffalo for several hours each day and at one point within 10 yards of a small group as they fed in the 12-foot high reeds along the river. All we could see from time to time while down on our hands and knees were their feet very exciting. Although we saw numerous animals each day and made several stalks each day, Butch was quite adamant about not sending me home with a dink (dinky trophy). There were several times I would have been quite pleased with an animal, but the proclamation of dink! quickly broke off the stalk.
Nonetheless, over the next 11 days we were able to get everything we had come to Zimbabwe for with my expectations for trophy size and animal quality greatly exceeded. The Nyala, Waterbuck, Blue Wildebeest, and Southern Bushbuck all exceed SCI record book minimums by, on average, five inches, with the Wildebeest exceeding minimums by 22 inches. We also were able to take a very nice Impala that was just under the book minimum and an old Baboon that looked like a retired cage fighter that none of the others had enough courage to get near.
The hunting was interesting and challenging. I was using a 338 Win Mag and a 458 Lott. Shots ranged from 60 to well over 250 yards and some were in the clear and others were in the thick brush. Hunting was spot and stalk except for the Nyala which was taken from a hide along the river after several days of patterning his behavior. Readers familiar with the situation in Zimbabwe know there has been an inordinate amount of relocation of veterans and their families from the cities to private lands. This encroachment, as would be expected, has brought poaching and an expanding margin of where human activities overlap hunting areas. It made the hunting interesting a couple of days where foot and cart traffic along a main dirt track kept the animals moving. We did not find this at all distracting, just an added challenge, as there are a lot of very large trophy animals there.
The permanent camp we stayed in overlooked the river from a high vantage point and there were lions along the river bank several nights. The facilities were excellent and the food was just fabulous. Everything is cooked over a wood fire by Leadmore the chef. As well, the water for showers is heated by wood and the camp is kept spotless by Lucy and Fungai. Skinning and trophy care was excellent with Kariga and Terdai attending the skinning, salting, boiling and drying. Water comes from deep wells and is completely safe to drink.
Butch and his trackers Absolom and Mazonde were excellent people to be with in the field. Butch has a wicked sense of humor which we greatly appreciate and is only matched by his professionalism. There is nothing better than working hard all day and spontaneously laughing until you almost pee. I mentioned at the start of this that Humani is a working farm also and we met some of the nicest people. Of course Roger and Ann Whittall are the consummate hosts. Their daughters, Sarah Whittall and Jennifer Coaton, were also most gracious in hosting us in Harare and ensuring we got our shopping completed with a tour of the city. Adrienne, Charles, Mark, Sue, Hilton and several others who support the hunting and farm operations were a kick in the pants. We cant recommend this crew and location high enough! My wife was with us in the field every day and said this was the best trip she has ever taken.
They have aggressive anti-poaching patrols throughout the Conservancy and manage trophy quality through a strict quota system on some animals, so book early. The accommodations were well maintained and the equipment excellent. In late September there were very few insects and no tsetse flies. We saw numerous elephants up (really) close and personal, lion, black and white rhino (we were within less than 10 yards of the white rhino) which I understand is uncommon in this area and a myriad of other plains game including leopard and other small cats.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
In 2005 I attended the SCI show in Reno with the specific intention of talking to as many outfitters as possible about an elephant hunt. I had an open mind as to country etc. Elephant hunting is a serous business, so the experience of the PH, and the chance of getting a reasonable trophy were paramount in my thinking. I spent three days looking, listening and talking to many outfitters and at the end of the day I chose RWS. Roger Whitall talks sense in a way I understand, he lays out the options and the chances of success. He has a bunch of very competent PH's and other staff that all work well together Richard Tabor is a safe and very competent PH who is fast gaining a very good reputation. Many of todays well known PH's have been through the RWS setup and have been taught well. My wife has accompanied me on most trips and enjoys the place as much as I do.

I was not going to file this hunt report, feeling that these people in Zimbabwe desperately need the influence of foreign currency. I advised Safari Outfitters, upon my return, that this should be sold as a single species hunt. Also to advice clients not to expect to shoot an elephant over 35 pounds (my PH told me this). They just sent out an email "bullet" advertising the same hunt.
To: David Stingl From Safari Outfitters
Safari Outfitters does understand and share your disappointment with the outcome of your safari in Zimbabwe with Roger Whittall Safaris July 15 through August 8, 2005. I think we can agree that Roger Whittall Safaris is considered to be one of the very best in the business. He has earned a fine reputation for honesty and integrity and we very proud to be his partner.
We understand that you took a Cape buffalo, sable, eland, bushbuck, warthog, 2 impala, crocodile, zebra, klipspringer, wildebeest and a kudu. We also understand that you wounded a very nice lion.
There were a number of hunters that followed you into Chewore, but none of them were hunting elephant and only one was hunting lion. One hunter came in on August 9th. He missed his shot at a lion, took a record book leopard and a buffalo. Another client started his hunt on August 19th at Chewore where he took a leopard and a 45 ½ inch buffalo. Three other hunters were there in August for buffalo and plains game hunts. All of the above mentioned hunters were quite pleased with their safaris.
We promoted a bit 4 in Chewore South for September of this year based on the overall success of hunter there the past many years and at the request of Roger Whittail Safaris. There is a drought in Zimbabwe this year and the hunting has been more difficult than other years, but there was still good success.
You must understand that weather conditions and patterns have a great influence on the movement, distribution and activities of wildlife. Sometimes species are forced to move long distances to find food and water. It is very unfortunate that the timing of your hunt coincided with these adverse conditions - but perhaps had you killed the lion you would be more satisfied with the hunt.
We all feel bad that you did not score on your cats and elephant. I spoke with Roger and he is trying to locate a quality lion hunt in another area for you in 2006 we will be back in touch with you on this.
From: Peter Wood (PH)
I firstly want to say that Dave Stingl is a great guy and we had a lot of fun, and of course a lot of frustrations. I will not dispute the fact that we did not see an abundance of game, even though we were there for nigh on three weeks. As you probably heard we are in a drought this year and that did not help our cause. Many of the rivers are dry and there is not much food around. We did not see buffalo for many days as their routes get large as they look for food sometimes only coming back through after a very long time, hence taking the lions with them. We were also unfortunate that both other operators in Chewore were also hunting lion reducing the available areas due to this.
The leopard was really a mind boggler for me as they were just not interested in coming to the baits; we had one male come in but left the scene before it was light enough for us to make a shot that was the last we saw of him.
It was a really tough hunt and I think it was for me just one of those that not much worked out at all.
I spoke to Dave about the possibility of coming back for a lion hunt on Humani.
I don't know what else to say as it is never good to have an unhappy client, if there is any other way that I can help please let me know.

Chewore is old Africa at its finest. Don't waste your time hunting small ranches in Africa near developed areas. You deserve better. Go where you sleep hearing lions and wake up seeing elephants and buffalo. Try to have Myles McCallum as your PH. If he is not available change your safari dates. All the other guys are great, but he was outstanding in every aspect of my hunt. Myles, many, many thanks! Roger and Sarah Whittall are outfitters you can trust on. This was my second trip with them. Despite the land grabbing of part of their Humani Ranch, the Save Valley Conservancy still holds plenty of game, including elephant, buffalo, lions, wild dogs, etc. Hunting in a ranch like this has nothing to do with experiences in the vast majority of ranches in South Africa. Be in shape as this is hard hunting, miles of tracking that will make you feel great. Chewore is really big and doesn't have animals concentrated. It is not a firing gallery, what makes the hunt so much better. You will not be a designated shooter, but will actually hunt for the animals. Don't expect huge ivory. It's not there. We shot the 25th bull tracked, on the evening of the 8th day, and it was the biggest so far! There were lots of big buffalo. If trophy size is your thing (not mine) go early around April as you may do better on tusk size.

| Problems
of Hunt: |
None whatsoever. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking a cape buffalo with a double rifle. Stalking to within 25 yards to two bull elephant. Stalking into and amongst huge herds of buffalo (200-500 head) on an almost daily basis. Taking an exceptional kudu bull at dusk. Surprising a male lion from his rest in the shade of the thick jess. Experiencing the sheer quantity and quality of plains game on Humani. Overall, an absolutely tremendous experience! |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
A fleece jacket for the cool evenings and early mornings. Bring a pair of boots that are well broken yet quiet on hard-packed terrain. I used Passport Health's "controlled release" insect repellant and had no problem with the tsetse flies. |

| Why? |
Roger Whittall runs a first-class operation. All equipment was well maintained. All camps were first rate, with ample staff to serve our every need, food was excellent, and cold drinks after a long day of hunting around the campfire were great! All details related to air charters, incoming/outgoing logistics were handled and no details were left un-addressed. Despite the recent news surrounding Zimbabwe, I am extremely confident that my future trips with Roger Whittall will be just as smooth and problem free. I cannot speak highly enough about my experience and overall satisfaction with this trip. |

Hunting with Guy Whittall was a very special highlight. Guy is knowledgeable, experienced, and great fun to be around. His focus on the quality of my experience was paramount, and he did everything possible to ensure the success of our hunt, the quality of the trophies, and the overall experience being second to none. Further noteworthy is Guy's understanding of my desire to use a vintage double rifle for my buffalo. Not only did Guy understand my desire (we could have used my scoped 375 to take very nice buffalo on separate occasions), Guy realized the limitations of the "two pipe" in terms of practical range. We hunted hard, and stalked extremely close to ensure good shots. Rather than opt for an easier method, Guy's persistence in making sure we used the drop lock 577 NE made the experience that much sweeter!

|
Peter Wood was an extremely diligent, hard working and pleasant professional hunter. He was very adept at finding game and evaluating it. One of my priorities was to shoot the game myself without anyone else's bullets being in the animal. Peter fully understood and respected that, to my great appreciation. We hunted elephant by tracking, but ended up shooting one that we lucked upon by car. We reviewed large herds of buffalo but eventually tracked some dagga boys and I shot one. I found tracking much more fun than looking at herds. After the elephant and buffalo were in the bag, we tracked kudu and I shot a nice 54 inch kudu in the thick brush. The safari was a fabulous experience and I would recommend Peter Wood as a PH, Roger Whittall Safaris, and Ron Young as a booking agent to anyone.
