NEW ZEALAND HUNTING
Over the years I had heard so much good and bad about New Zealand hunting, that I thought I would experience it first hand to form my own opinion. Interestingly, everything I had heard was true.
New Zealand is a fairly unique hunting experience. I would compare most of it to white tail deer hunting in North America. At least that is true as regards the introduced species of red stag, wapiti, sika, sambar, and rusa deer. These species are all largely ranch hunted, and the hunter can almost create his own degree of difficulty and trophy quality depending upon his physical conditioning and his pocketbook. Free range hunting for all of these species is available, but because of the dense forestry in the free range areas of New Zealand, hunting conditions can be extremely difficult in both the quantity of game seen, and the quality of trophy secured.
Ranch hunting remains the backbone of the New Zealand hunting experience. But like in Texas or Africa, all ranch hunting experiences are not the same. Hunting blocks can be as small as 90 acres of relatively open country to as large as 30,000 acres of country near identical to free range conditions. But the difference between free range hunting and ranch hunting will be the quality and quantity of game opportunity. Because so much income is generated by quality wildlife management, a true trophy opportunity is much more likely with these ranch hunts. And the good news for all hunters is that the collapse of the "velvet market" has increased the availability of trophy stags available to hunters at a much reduced price.
New Zealand remains the only country in the world where helicopter hunting is legal. In an effort to control what the New Zealand Wildlife Department feels is an excess number of tahr, chamois, red deer, and even in some areas, wapiti, the government has legalized control of these populations utilizing helicopter hunting. This legalization allows us as hunters to experience any and all degrees of utilization of a helicopter in the legal pursuit of wildlife. While I know of no trophy hunter who would take achievement in shooting an animal from a helicopter, there are many animals located in a helicopter, which then deposits the hunter in the area, and he can at his own discretion harvest this animal in minutes or days, depending upon his sense of "fair chase". But even if no animal is harvested, it is a thrilling experience to ride a helicopter through the "Southern Alps" of New Zealand and watch game movement. Certainly success is related to temperature, snowfall, the rut, vegetation and water availability, and although the use of either a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft, is not in the true spirit of hunting, it is nonetheless an exciting experience in which to participate.
I was fortunate to have the expertise of Wes Vining and The Trophy Connection in allowing me to secure "Reel Hunting" as my professional guide and outfitter. Mike and Julie Hodder put on a first-class experience for any hunter and his companion. I think it is most important to-locate -a New Zealand outfitter who will take the time and trouble to investigate the availability of various trophy animals on the multitude of hunting ranches in both the North and South Islands. Mike Hodder certainly does this for his hunters. I would also recommend that any hunter give at least a one-year, and preferably a two-year notice to his outfitter, as aging trophy breed animals are frequently promised to various outfitters two years in advance. A deposit is typically paid by the outfitter obligating the rancher or breeder to commit a trophy animal to a given hunting outfit. And if the hunter has a desire to place this animal in a specific hunting block of a size and degree of difficulty to suit his own physical abilities and hunting challenge, this can be accomplished with ease if advance notice is given.
All in all, I considered New Zealand a very interesting hunting experience for anyone looking for unique place to go. I can recommend it without reservation.
