I almost hate to write this report because it's a little like telling the whole world about your secret fishing hole. I wrote last year about an archery bow hunt at Q Creek that ended well. This was our seventh trip to the ranch -- the first six were primarily fishing trips (although last year, on a lark, I applied for an antelope tag and, through Tad's (the guide/outfitter) exceptional efforts, I took a P&Y antelope in a single, long hunting day). This year all eight of us applied and drew tags. Q Creek is such a large ranch (500,000+ acres)that there are sections in Areas 47 and 48 on the Wyoming antelope grid. So, four of us drew tags in each section. All eight hunters were successful and all antelope, save one, green-scored SCI75 or greater. I was the only one who had taken a pronghorn previously. We hunted 2x1 and two of the groups were father-son combos. The guides were exceptionally dedicated and patient with all of us, but especially with the young hunters. Tad and Chad were the guides who drew (or chose) the father-son combos -- and both were excellent. My son has a fair bit of international hunting experience but my nephew's experience is more limited. Chad was his guide and I cannot speak highly enough of the effort he made. My nephew missed on his first attempt (at what was, by report, a B&C class antelope). Chad encouraged him, and patiently reassured him, and eventually the young man took the largest antelope of any of us. My own son collected the second largest pronghorn with a single 408 yd shot thanks to Tad's patience and skillful stalking. I could talk at length about the guides, skill sets but I covered that in last year's note. I do want to re-emphasize the quality of the experience at Q Creek. The lodge is 5 star and the meals are always delicious, hearty, and over-large. Verna, the chef, is gifted to say the least -- if she lived my part of the world, I would offer her a job. Once again, Q Creek is a gem -- and, if a hunter is lucky enough to draw an antelope or elk tag in their area, she/he could not do better than to hunt the ranch. I've been lucky enough to hunt antelope with them twice but I have 7 years of failure in my attempts to draw an elk tag. I would encourage every subscriber to check out the folks at Q Creek.

Flights were on time and luggage arrived without problem, no small feat these days. However, on the return from CPR to DEN, the United agent insisted that I remove the TSA locks from my bow-case and leave them off, despite the fact that they were TSA-accessible. I have no idea why she would do that -- and when I asked she said it was because it was easier to get into the case. |

of Hunt: |
None - everything was top drawer. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking a P&Y pronghorn with a bow at 60 yds -- spot and stalk; we did not use blinds. The country is beautiful, if somewhat desolate in places. The antelope are plentiful and of great quality -- as are the deer and elk. We saw very few other hunters (on BLM land) but I had Q Creek all to myself -- and had Tad's personal assistance and attention. The amenities at Q Creek are always excellent -- the lodge is spacious and comfortable; the food is outstanding (Verna, the chef, was kind enough to prepare an appetizer using the tenderloin from my buck; it was delicious, as good as any wild game dish I have tasted -- and Verna does not like antelope.); and the fishing guides were attentive, patient, and knowlegeable (Chad and Blake). We were fortunate to share a couple of meals with the owner of the ranch, Stan Kroenke, a consumate gentleman and gracious host. The Q Creek staff also took special pains to make the experience for my son (age 11) and nephew (age 12) exceptional. They taught both boys to fly cast (and the boys were far more successful than I), took them on hikes to the tops of mountains, educated them about shooting safety (the ranch has a 3-D bow course, a rifle range, and skeet), and even let my son stalk a couple of elk bulls (unarmed, of course, since we had no tags for elk) so that he could begin to learn to call. A fantastic place managed by excellent people -- an outdoor experience for both hunters and nonhunters. I will return to hunt (if I can draw a tag). |

| Why? |
We have fished at Q Creek yearly over Labor Day weekend for the last 5 years. Our group consists of about 8 ppl on average with at least a couple of young kids (age <12). Tad and his crew always do a phenomonal job of taking care of everything -- and we always catch lots of trout. Q Creek is over 500,000 acres and the antelope, deer, and elk are abundant and so this year I applied for an antelope tag. I was successful and purchased an over-the-counter mule deer tag, just in case. Do to time constraints, and to the fact that this is mostly a fishing trip with friends, not a hunting trip, I was only able to bow hunt for one day. And what a day it was. We hunted hard, had multiple stalks on good bucks (antelope and mule deer as they presented themselves), and at day's end, Tad got me into position to take a P&Y antelope as he moved from one pasture to another. We used a decoy and belly crawled quite a ways. Tad's knowlege of the land and animals -- and his intuition -- were exceptional. His willingness to go the extra mile to give me the shot opportunity will not be forgotten. Just a truly magical day. As I said to him before our last stalk: even if we were unsuccessful, this was a fantastic hunt. |

There are big bulls there, but there seemed to be public poaching on the private land that ran the elk off. Every day we saw people on the land and tracks from vehicles every day when they were not supposed to be there. We also hit a freak snowstorm in which we lost two of our five hunting days. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
Rebuttal from Tad of Q Creek:
What Mr. Papapietro is talking about is not a "poaching" problem. Our ranch is over 570,000 acres with public land intermixed. What we have (as with any other large ranch) are trespassers who either don't know where they are at or are simply trespassing on private land to hunt. This will always be a problem, however, we are patroling the ranch boundaries in order to best prevent this problem. With more than 890 square miles, it is tough to be everywhere all the time. Let it be known that Q Creek doesn't have a poaching or a trespassing "problem" as Mr. Papapietro explains.
ReRebuttal from Rich Papapietro:
I agree with Tad. The ranch is massive and it is hard for them to cover everything on it. While I was there, I did see several people who knowingly snuck onto the ranch as they left their bikes at the gate and walked in. We had people walking through the area inbetween where we were watching elk. There was definitely movement going on. As I said, Tad has a great operation, I would just recommend doing the first hunt, it is nothing negative against Q Creek. I would definitely go back with them again.
