This was my first African safari, and I'm thankful that I chose Prohunt Zambia. PH/Owner, Richard Bell-Cross, and his parents, Barry and Guida, run a first rate safari operation on a huge concession in wild, unfenced Africa. The volume of wildlife is incredible. Trophy lions and large leopards are common, and hundreds of plains game animals are seen each day. Richard Bell-Cross works hard to make the safari successful and enjoyable for everyone. The camp staff are cheerful, helpful, and good at what they do. Each lunch and dinner is a special treat. For nonhunters or hunters who need a break from hunting, the river in front of camp offers great fishing and bird watching. My older parents and my girlfriend accompanied me on this hunt, and everyone had a wonderful time.

The purpose of the trip was to hunt the African lion. The lion we harvested was quality beyond my highest expectations. While in the bush I observed many oribi, baboon, warthogs, kudu (some very fine bulls), leopard tracks near our lion baits, some excellent roan and sable and a few elephant. All game appeared to be in great condition. We also spotted several stripe-sided jackal. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
No problems with any aspect of the hunt. Richard and his people are as good as any I have ever hunted with. The only "problem" was the failure of the lion to show up on bait before the last morning of the hunt. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
The tracking of a wounded lion must be the most thrilling, exciting, frightening thing I've ever participated in. We took a mature, dark maned beautiful lion. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
I took a .338 Winchester Magnum with was perfect for the plains game mentioned above. I used a .416 Remington Magnum for the hippo and lion. Wouldn't recommend anything smaller for dangerous game. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
There is simply so much game to be had in this concession. Had I already not have harvested many of the species available I would have had a great time with that available to me. It would be a great place for a first time safari. |

I hunted with Richard Bellcross last year and took sable, roan, hippo, hartebeest, oribi, and zebra. Before I left I booked a hunt for situtunga in the Bangweulu Swamp. Richard called in April and asked if I would like to be the first to hunt situtunga in Lunga Luswishi the same area I hunted plains game last year. We would be able to hunt situtunga in the morning and evening and plains game thoughout the day. He knew there was situtunga in certain parts of his concession from tracks and from the scouts who found several sets of horns from lion kills. So he built several machens around one swamp that was approximately 30 acres in size.
First morning in the stand I saw six different bulls and seven females. I shot the biggest bull and he was 29 ½ inches. It was exactly like hunting whitetails back here. His areas are loaded with situtungas that have never been hunted.
He has several different swamps in his concession that he has never hunted. This was going to be a trial hunt because he wasn

Game This was a 21-day (but were only able to hunt 19 days due to our medical practices) full bag safari to concentrate on lion and leopard. It included a host of plains game including sable, roan, black and kafue lechwe, sitatunga, and puke to name a few. I bow hunted for both lion and leopard. My companion on the trip was rifle hunting plains game. Due to the nature of bow hunting in general and the fact I was hunting for cats, this didn't conflict at all. Richard's concession is so vast (13,000 square kilometers) that you can't hunt it from one camp. From our camp situated in beautiful spot on the Kafue River we were able to take all but a couple of animals without needing to move. We saw and could have harvested (my companion only wanted representative animals and not necessarily RW trophies) Rowland - Ward representatives of every species that were available for our camp!! The animals were abundant even though there were four fishing (aka poaching) active in our area. Incidentally then were evicted by the government prior to out departure. The buffalo and kudu (species we hoped to hunt) were not present out of the camp we hunted but were just north of us at another camp that we didn't make it to. I took a magnificent full dark-mane lion with my bow on the 15th day of our 19-day hunt. He green scored 24 ½ inches. I also took a chobe bushbuck (a species that I really wanted) after countless stalks on 14-inch class animals. I passed multiple opportunities to engage stalks on other animals due to my wanting to concentrate only on cats and spiral horned antelope. My companion, however, took a host of animals with a rifle (including a 40 inch class sable), most of which were RW qualifiers. We had a total of four adult male lions on bait and one leopard that was small so we didn't sit for him. The facilities were very comfortable. I was given private quarters with hot/cold running water/showers and a flush toilet. There is electricity from solar powered generators. An attentive staff of approximately 22 served our camp. The camp chef was formally trained and it showed with each meal. There is daily maid and laundry service to keep you neat and tidy. Richard took us fishing daily after lunch and the quality of fishing rivals the hunting. The airline service got us there without hassle or incident. We experience no delays or any of the other problems that have been reported in some of the South Africa airports like Jberg. The Trans-Atlantic flight to Africa is always very long so plan for that. Richard is a consummate professional and gentleman. Working tirelessly from the minute he arose each day until the time he went to bed Richard was resolute in his focus on the hunt, ensuring the hunter gets his animal. Game was abundant and sighted each day and the trophy quality was obviously outstanding. Richard is currently hunting only about 1/8 of his total concession, but he is opening new areas each session. I can only imagine what it is like in the newly opened areas although I will let you know in a truly classic safari in the remote wild Africa this is it. This narrative doesn't do this hunt service so I invite you to call and talk to me. The 21-day lion and leopard classic safari is $1,500/day with packing and dipping an additional $800. there will be additional trophy fees incurred, as is customary, which proved to be very reasonable. Concession fees vary with the type of hunt planned. You can arrange commercial flights to Lusaka, Zambia and either charter a flight to the hunting area or go by car as we did. Richard picked us up in Lusaka and got us through customs with record speed and no difficulties. He proved to be an excellent tour guide during the four-hour drive to his hunting camp. This allowed us to see the local sights and was well worth the effort. This hunt met and exceeded our expectations in every way. I cannot recall my problems encountered during this hunt other than the endemic poaching problems that plagues most of the hunting areas and parks in all of Africa. Even though Richard provides an anti-poaching patrol for his area at his own expense, poaching can't be effectively controlled without the involvement and enforcement of the government. I am also at a loss for a specific highlight for this trip as each day held a new one. Like hearing a male lion roar at ten yards after passing within feet of our blind or being a few feet from a fully spread our hissing cobra that spit at us while attempting to photograph it or watching an eagle attempting and finally succeed at taking a fish that is fighting at the end of a fishing line or taking in wild Africa as it came to life every morning before the rest of the camp awoke while sitting riverside by a campfire writing in my journal or the thrill of taking a Rowland - Ward caliber full mane lion with a bow! Needless to say I would highly recommend this hunt to anyone. Experience: I have hunted throughout North America and I am currently working on completing a North America slam of all species of animals, in addition to trying to complete a big five and the spiral horn antelope with a bow. I am in good physical condition and would recommend this hunt to anyone regardless of his or her physical condition.

I have just returned from a 7 week stint in Zambia with Richard Bell-Cross of Pro Hunt Zambia Ltd. Myself and several clients did 3 Classic Safaris and a couple of minis as well, these to include 3 Lion hunts and 2 Leopard hunts, along with all other plains game available. To say the very least it was absolutely amazing. First and foremost, the Big cat hunting was absolutely incredible. I have personally taken 4 Lions and 3 Leopards to date, and have never seen a place with so many cats. The area was the Lunga Luswishi in the Kafue region, bordering the Kafue National Park. It encompasses nearly 13,000 square kilometers, of virtually untouched game habitat. The first 2 Lions taken were huge black-maned cats, and each hunter sat only 1 evening to take the Lion. The 3rd Lion shot was a big ginger maned Lion, and the 2 Leopards were very good as well, one of them an honest 180lb cat. So far the hunts were 100% successful on big cats, but the number of cats in the area was the real surprise. It was not unusual to have 3-4 different baits being hit at the same time, all by different cats, it was amazing.
As for the other game, absolutely incredible as well. Richard has done extensive anti-poaching in the area for the past couple of years, even during the closure and you can see it definitely paid off. We saw literally hundreds of animals each day, Impala, Puku, Warthog, Hartebeest, Zebra, Hippo, Buffalo, Eland, etc. Along with some incredible Sable, numerous bulls over 40" and good numbers of Roan as well. We took several good Roan during the course of the hunts. Many concerns were also in regards to getting guns in and out of the country, shipping of trophies, etc. Everything was smooth as glass, Mr. Bell-Cross and his staff were very well prepared, and nothing came unexpected to them or us.
I realize many potential hunters have be skeptical about the recent events in Zambia, and it's recent opening, but with the right operator, in the right areas, the hunting is second to none. I would be happy to provide pictures in regards to the hunts, I have compiled quite a few over the past 7 weeks in Zambia. As I would also be happy to write an article for the Hunting Report detailing the extended time I spent in Zambia on Safari.
