Fun hunt. Free range deer hunt, no fences other than those the forestry service puts up to protect small plots of new trees. Area run by local hunting club. Saw some very good fallow deer, but deer were very wary. Shot a small buck on the last morning. Traditions after shooting a deer are very interesting. Another hunter in camp shot a very good, old fallow. Saw a few good red stag but was focused on fallow. Would like to return to try again for one of the big ones. Joe Jakab does a great job organizing hunts in Eastern Europe. We arranged this hunt on short notice when weather got bad in Romania while hunting for chamois. Cook at the hunting house made very good Hungarian meals.

I did not get a chamois, but feel I would have it I could have hunted a few more days. Bad weather moved in and I made a choice to go hunt fallow deer in Hungary at lower elevations. This was my second hunt in Romania for Carpathian chamois, this area is easier terrain than the first time, although maybe not as many chamois. Local hunters were very good and enjoyed hunting. I borrowed a rifle which was interesting over/under rifle/shotgun. Hotel was very simple but clean. Most meals eaten in the hotel restaurant which was good. Joe Jakab does a great job organizing trips in Eastern Europe. I'll be back to Romania to try again for chamois. I'll probably go later in the year once I know leaves have dropped. These chamois stay in the forest so spotting them early in the fall is difficult.

I was on vacation visiting with my wife and I took three days to hunt roe, water and muntjac. Hunted one day for Chinese and shot a very old water deer. Hunted roe deer but was unable to find "the big one" saw many smaller roe deer that would be considered trophies. Also, hunted for muntjac which where really hard to see and for them to stand still to take a shot! It was so much fun my wife wants to go again! She doesn't hunt.

I originally saw a report about Joe Jakab in the Hunting Report November 2009. I can only echo the same things Bary Bowman says. Joe really know his way around Eastern Europe. He and his local drivers take care of all driving and sightseeing during the hunt and Joe hunts with you everyday. Daniel is a real pro as his area is high in the Julian Alps right on the border of Austria inside Slovenia. He is a hunting machine. Accommodations were in an inn owned by Daniel which was very comfortable for my wife and myself. An intersting site right next to his inn is the Mauthausen Concentration Camp that was operated from 1943-1945 and housed 1,300 men to build the Ljubelj Tunnel through the alps in this location. It was an eerie feeling to see the site of many buildings including the incinerator. Also be prepared to shoot 300 yards uphill.

This was a fantastic trip for both me and my wife. We did as much touring and sightseeing as hunting. Lodging varied from small guest rooms in homes to mountain hunting lodges to very nice hotels in Croatia. All lodging was clean and comfortable. Our trip involved some long drives between hunting areas. It can be a little cramped, but it's a great way to see interesting places. If the hunter wanted to, he could fly between destinations and cut down the driving time. Food also varied from quick sandwich stops on the long drives to gourmet meals served by a chef in the Macedonia hunting lodge. The hunting was quite varied. For the alpine chamois, some hard climbing was required to reach the animals. In Croatia, temps were very pleasant, the mountains are not too high, but very rocky. Macedonia was very steep but we saw lots of chamois. The Romania hunt was not part of our original plan, but we were successful in our other hunts pretty quickly so Joe offered to set up the hunt in Romania if we wanted to do it. Another hunter that was on a similar itinerary did the same. He ended up taking a very big Carpathian chamois on his second day. We hunted one afternoon, the next full day and then the following morning before we had to leave to catch our flight. The terrain there is steep and nasty, some very difficult climbing and the guides move fast! We saw one chamois but I did not have a shot. I will go back and try again in a few years. All of the local guides were very good in each location. Joe really knows Eastern Europe and can organize just about any type of hunting you want to do there. You should be flexible, because he's always working on different options. Our original plan was to hunt Bosnia for the Balkan chamois, but when we arrived, Joe had an extra permit for a much better place in Macedonia if we wanted to switch. The extra few days in Romania is another example of what Joe can set up on short notice. This is an excellent trip for a non-hunting spouse, lots to see near each of the hunting areas. The cost of this hunt was very reasonable compared to sheep and goat hunting in other parts of the world. Joe is very fair with his pricing. I'm already looking forward to a return trip for some different animals in the near future.

Major Game Animals Taken: Deer, Red - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Scottish red stag. Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: Game was in prime condition. These were wild deer. As a result body and antler size do not match what one finds on estate hunting preserves.

It was a meat camp and I only saw one decent stag and couldn't get a shot at it. Deer, Roe - Availability: Were scarce and I missed one. Game Condition Comments: I bought the hunt at FNAWS Auction believing it was for trophy quality animals but the area I was taken to was not a trophy area and I was told that by the local manager.
