I purchased a darted Rhino hunt from Ntshonalanga Safaris at the Lake Superior SCI Chapter Fundraiser on April 3, 2009. I made arrangements to take the hunt in 2010. In January 2010, I became aware that Dirk was no longer associating himself with Ntshonalanga, and was starting his own company in the States, called NTS USA.
In July of 2010, as you know, RSA enacted new regulations regarding "green" Rhino hunting. As the hunt was no longer viable, I asked Dirk what my options were. His response was "I have $4500 cost on that donation, that is what we have to work with."
The hunt was valued at $14,250 on the donation. I told Dirk I would be happy with a replacement hunt hunt valued at anywhere between $8000 - $14,000 adding that most Rhino hunts with other reputable outfitters were selling for around $10,000 that I would be satisfied with that.
Dirk refused, saying that he was only willing to cover the cost of the donation. Knowing where this was headed, I requested a refund. On 11/11/10, Dirk said he would refund the chapter, no refund or contact has been made. I have repeatedly tried to contact him, with no response. I have filed an ethics complaint with SCI, and are pursuing other options as well.

Outfitter Response:
Hi Barbara, Mr. Klapmeier bought his donation on April 3, 2009 from Ntshonalanga Safaris, a SA based Hunting Outfit. The donation clearly stated that the hunt is valid for 2009. His first correspondence with me in regards to his hunt was on June 16th, 2009, 3 months after he bought the donation. In my reply to his e-mail I clearly told him that he need to take the hunt in 2009. Mr. Klapmeier's next correspondence with me was on September 11th, 2009, another 3 months later. He clearly had no intention of taking the hunt that year. I allowed it and on September 27th, 2009 I told him in writing that the hunt will expire on June 1st 2010 due to legal issues in SA. I even copied the act for him on that mail. Mr. Klapmeier's next correspondence with me was on October 15th, 2010. This was 18 months after he bought the donation and 1 year after I wrote to him that the hunt will expire on June 1st, 2010. This was also 5 months after the hunt legally expired. Now Mr. Klapmeier insisted on a Sable or Lioness hunt to the value of the donation. I offered him a plains game hunt to the value of the minimum requirements for the donation from our side. Now, 5 months after the expiration of the hunt he wanted to shoot animals to the value of $10k or have his money back. He had ample time to do the hunt and knew that it expired already.
Mr. Klapmeier bought the hunt with Ntshonalanga Safaris. This company were legally declared bankrupt in 2010 I was merely the person he corresponded with. He may just as well pursue one of the Skinners that worked for the company. As a individual I have not signed any surety in this regard and Mr. Klapmeier is directing his anger towards the wrong entity. Even after all of this I still offered him a plains game hunt.
After consultation with Financial and Legal Aid, it was decided to NOT refund Mr. Klapmeier as the effort was great in allowing him the opportunity to do the hunt or to substitute the hunt. I have not had 1 e-mail from either Mr. Klapmeier or SCI Ethics Board in the last 16 months in this regard. My e-mail address is still the same as what it was in 2009.
I would advise Mr. Klapmeier to pursue his actions against Ntshonalanga Safaris. Currently he is pursuing me in person and he is involving people who has absolutely nothing to do with this issue.
I am more than willing to put anyone in contact with the legal firm who did the audit and the bankruptcy, they just need to ask the details.
