| Problems
of Hunt: |
The Bongos has become very agresifs. Mostly because the pochers (snares). One PH in camp guiding and american client was crashed by a bongo (several brokens ribs), one pigmy tracker last year was gored in the belly by a bongo, some hunters clients were attaked by bongos last seasons! Many problems with broken hunting cars. Poaching problems (my bongo had an older injury from an snare in a leg) |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Hunting and tracking in the rain forest with the pygmies. Outstanding!!! |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good boots(Cabela's Wolwerine goretex)are excellent! and dark green shirts and pants. Also protective glasses to avoid be injured by vegetation. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
But only for the very dedicated hunter who can afford the hunt in the rain forest (hot, wet et thick) and deal with a very complicated country! |

|
Paperwork and dealing with Customs and Police in Yaoundé airport is time consuming and often very difficult. It is a very difficult hunt and the hunter must speak prior the hunt carefully with the outfitter/PH about game availability, hunting conditions, paperwork, etc. Also ask about travel conditions between Douala/Yaoundé and camp. If you can afford is much better flight in and out but charter cost are very expensive!

Condition Comments: |
Game is in excellent condition with good trophy quality. There is lots of fresh sign indicating good numbers, however you will only see animals, for the most part, that are called-in or tracked-up. Sometimes you may be within 20 yards of an animal and not be able to see it because of the dense vegetation. Non-game animals such as gorillas, monkeys and chimpanzees are found common. The pygmys are among the best trackers in the world. |

Cost $7,500 for trip in and $7,500 for trip out. Booked by the safari company but safari company has no control over price. Theoretcially, the fee is to be split with the people coming out and those going in. When I went in no one was coming out so myself, another hunter and a photographer (3 people) shared the costs of $2,500 each. Plus the outfitter allowed the next party to come in two days early and I had to go out on this plane at a shared cost of $1,125 each and lose two days of hunting. My alternative was to hunt those two days, then pay $7,500 to have the plane pick me up. This I couldn't afford. I knew that the Air Charter costs/arrangements was a potential problem when I booked the hunt, but I gamble on it and it worked out more or less, satisfactorally.

As you can see I didn't put the name of the guide because I don't want to make him any damage. Nevertheless in this hunt I was lucky to know the pygmies from the hunt I did in the same place two years ago. Shouldn't I knew them I wouldn't have hunted anything. The reason, from my point of view, is that the guide didn't treat pygmies politely, he shouted at them and most of times with no reason. So the third day of hunt I realized that the pygmies where reluctant to cooperate and I spoke to them. After the conversation I knew that I wasn't going to hunt if the PH came with us. So I talked to him and convinced him to come but a bit back of the group and convinced the pygmies that I was going to hunt with them alone and that the guide wouldn't rush in. Next day in the morning I shot sitatunga, same day at night I shot two Bate's and next day I shot giant forest hog.

Any trophy you take you really have worked hard for it. It is a hunt that the size of the trophy is not the important thing, except with elephant most of times you shoot just knowing that you are shooting a male (for the track) but you would understand that if you can hardly see the body of a buffalo at 10 paces for sure you can't see the horns and you have to shoot quickly being so close to the animal (normally elephant and buffalo don't like to find an intruder wanting to kill them at this distance). Furthermore there is a lot of poaching so many animals can have old wounds and this fact makes alos necessary shooting as quick as possible to avoid charges. Nevertheless I highly recommend the hunt.

ATTACHMENT TO HUNTING TRIP REPORT FORM Major Game Animals Available:
Forest Sitatunga- I took my Sitatunga the first morning of the hunt. It is difficult to say they are abundant but NSOK had a quota of five for the year and used the entire quota. In order to be successful fresh rain is a necessity so the animals can be tracked. Of course it is possible and simply fortunate circumstances should one catch a Sitatunga crossing the road. We tracked mine after finding a track in the road. The Pygmy trackers are phenomenal. We followed the animal for two hours and finally found it in a pool of water surrounded by a swamp. He was in good condition and record book size however he had an open wound just above the left front hoof caused by a snare.
Giant Forest Hog---Again I was fortunate as it rained during the night and on my second day of the hunt we were able to track within ten feet of a group of Giant Forest Hogs. The foliage as was the case when tracking the Sitatunga was very thick. The Pigs were busy eating and making a lot of noise and didn't even know we were there. We saw many tracks over the following days of my Safari, which would indicate that there is a reasonably good population of these animals however, NSOK does not take many of these animals as I think most hunters do not want to waste time tracking them as they are mainly there for Bongo, Buffalo and Elephant. In my case I needed one to complete the Pigs of the World Inter Circle and had on a previous trip had taken a Bongo. Peters Duiker--- This Duiker is very abundant in the NSOK concession. Bay Duiker--- One would say the availability of this animal is between average and scarce. I only saw the one that I took but of the three of us who were in camp two took a Bay Duiker and the other did not hunt them as he spent most of his time on Elephant.
GAME SOUGHT BUT FAILED TO TAKE:
I was there primarily to take a Sitatunga, Giant Forest Hog and one Forest Duiker. If successful it would complete The Diamond Level of the Trophy Animals of Africa, the Diamond level for the Spiral Homed Animals of Africa and the Diamond Level of the Pigs Of The World. I was fortunate to take them all. I attribute this success to the ability of my PH, Hartley Combrinck and the uncanny ability of the Pigmy Trackers.
GENERAL COMMENTS ON GAME CONDITION:
All trophies were in excellent condition and of record book size. Other hunters in camp took Bongo, Elephant, Buffalo and Duikers including one Yellow Back. There is a large population of Bongo, Buffalo and Elephant and anyone who is serious about taking those three trophies should consider this operation. One must remember that in order to be successful in this endeavor there must be frequent rain so the animals can be tracked.
The foliage is just too thick and without rain the noise one makes by simply stepping on dry leaves alerts the game of your presence leaving little chance that you will even have a glimpse of a fleeing animal.
QUALITY OF OUTFIT, CONDITION OF CAMP, QUALITY OF FOOD:
NSOK has hunted the Loupundji concession for eight years and has established a very comfortable camp. There are three separate toilet and bathing facilities and they limit the number of hunters in camp at one time to three. The concession covers over 400,000 acres and borders a portion of the CAR. There is permanent dining facility with a cooler that is stocked with an adequate supply of Beer, Soft Drinks and Bottled Water. The camp is groomed each day by the staff and of course there is daily laundry service. Sleeping facilities consist of large tents with cement floors and two beds. The tents have a fly covering that protrudes several feet around all sides of the tent. This cover forms a canopy in the front portion of the tent and the cement floor extends about six feet in front of the tent as well creating if you will your own private little patio which includes two chairs and a table .A very pleasant seating arrangement in the afternoon while not hunting to enjoy a good book and a cool drink. The tents will be replaced before next season with permanent cabins.
The food was absolutely excellent. I would rate it as the best I have encountered after numerous Safaris. Lunch always begins with a salad followed by more than ample portions of meat and fresh vegetables. There is always fresh fruit available and bread is baked fresh each day. A variety of Cheese is also available and of course Coffee or Tea as well. Dinners are a repeat of lunch but usually start with some homemade soup. During the fourteen days in camp we were served Beef, Chicken and Fresh Fish so there was ample variety.
ABILITY OF GUIDE, CONDITION OF EQUIPMENT AND TROPHY CARE:
Hartley Combrinck my PH was outstanding. His knowledge of the habits of the animals is without a doubt the reason for my success on this Safari. He is easy going and good natured. He makes a point of telling you what to expect will happen when tracking an animal. He does not give up even when it appears your chance of success may be limited. He is attentive to your needs and constantly reassuring. I rate him as an excellent PH and would recommend him as a PH to anyone.
The equipment is relatively new and we had no problems. The vehicles are all equipped with four wheel drive and are spotlessly clean before the start of the morning hunt.
Trophy care is vitally important especially in the humid climate of the rain forest. They go the extra mile in this regard using not only copious amounts of salt but an additional mixture to ensure thoroughly dry and preserved hides before shipment.
AIRLINE COMMENTS:
My Flight was on Air France, operated by Delta. The flight was fine and the service as you would expect however, I would advise anyone departing from Atlanta to arrive at least three hours before departure time. They have established a new procedure whereby all international flights are checked in separately from domestic flights. It took one hour and forty five minutes to get a boarding pass. After that another line to have all baggage inspected before it can be loaded on the plane. Then there is the last minute screening of carry on luggage before entering the boarding area. By the time I got to the gate the plane was boarding and I had given myself slightly more than two hours for check in.
There were no problems with guns, ammunition or baggage. My bags arrived in Douala with my flight even though I had only a two hour layover in Paris.
COSTS:
This was basically a Sitatunga hunt and as a result the daily rate for the 14 days was $15,000. If Bongo had been included it would have been $26,000 Trophy Fess were $3,410 Gun License, Visa, Hunting License, NSOK assistance on arrival and departure was $1,800 Commercial Airfare was $2,500 Charter Airfare was $5,000 Trophy Prep and Shipping $1,500 PH Tip and Camp Staff$I,500 Hotel before and after Safari $400 TotalCost $31,110 SUMMARY REMARKS:
There were no problems with this hunt. Everything went smoothly. I have already offered well deserved praise about the Camp, Facilities, Food, Equipment and my PH. There is only one situation that truly upset me and to set the record straight, was not the fault of NSOK Safaris. The problem was the Air Charter. I was told to expect a Charter fee of $2,000 or maybe $2,500 at the Reno Convention. Then a week before departure I was told it could be as much as $4,200 and then after arrival it could be as much as $5,000. Nobody likes surprises especially costly ones.It is a long story but in short the Charter company thought on my the flight into camp there would be other hunters coming out.
That was their mistake not mine however when we arrived back in Douala they gave myself and the gentlemen I went into camp with a bill for three times more than we expected. The other gentlemen who came out with us was billed at about a third of what we were billed. We objected and only paid the same fare as he did. We were later confronted about this at our hotel and although no threats were made it was possible we could have been arrested at the airport if we tried to leave without paying what they said we owed. Keep in mind it was their mistake and they were expecting us to pay for their error. We met with the Charter people and paid them this outrageous fee. We all know these Charter operators are screwing us but there isn't a darn thing I can think of that we can do about it. Anybody have any ideas? This outfit is charging almost $11,000 for a two hour round trip flight. That is ridiculous but it is not the first time I have had to grin and bear it.
HUNTING EXPERIENCE:
This was my 22nd African Safari. I have hunted in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and of course allover the United States. I would obviously recommend this Safari to a friend but I would tell them to be aware of a possible surprise on the Charter fee.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HUNT:
The fulfillment of a Quest to take all the Trophy Animals of Africa as well as the Spiral Horned Animals and as an added bonus the successful tracking of a Giant Forest Hog.

Cameroon Airlines will not accept Cameroon under any circumstances. Other hunters going to Cameroon should be aware of this restriction and avoid Cameroon Airlines.
Memorandum on Airline Service - Cameroon Trip
1. Delta Airlines consistently ran late, causing us to miss vital connections in Atlanta and in Paris. We left from Monroe, Louisiana on Monday, May 31 and had three and a half hours in Atlanta to make a connection with Air France. However, Delta had mechanical problems on the ground in Monroe and we were over three hours late arriving in Atlanta, causing us to miss our connections with Air France. We were rerouted to London, Gatwick on Delta and then on to Paris on British Airways, arriving Paris on Tuesday, June 1 over six hours later than scheduled and worn out. Delta managed to lose our baggage and guns in the reroute. Only with the outstanding help of a lady in Air France baggage service were we able to capture our baggage and guns. However, it took over 24 hours to locate everything. One bag was checked to Paris and it arrived at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, one bag was checked to Douala, Cameroon and the guns came in Wednesday afternoon on a 1:30 p.m.. flight and they were checked to Douala for a Saturday arrival, as Air France does not fly to Douala on Thursday or Friday. We managed to intercept one duffel bag and the two guns in Paris but one duffel bag went on to Douala on Air France. As a result of not having our baggage and guns, we missed the Air France flight to Douala Wednesday morning and had to reschedule on Cameroon Airlines leaving Paris at 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night and arriving to Douala Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m.
2. Cameroon Airlines will not accept Cameroon under any circumstances. We went to the Cameroon Airlines station manager in Paris and he confirmed that they would accept unloaded firearms in locked cases but would not accept Cameroon, no matter how it was packed. Hunters beware.
3. Air France ran on time and their baggage service people at Charles DeGaulle airport in Paris are the best I have ever known. Without the help of Air France baggage service, we would have not found our baggage and guns in time to make our hunt schedule.
4. Delta did not disappoint us on the return, being almost an hour late leaving Paris for Atlanta and being almost an hour and a half late leaving Atlanta for Monroe.
