SUMMARY

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Cost of landowner tag went up after I got to camp and the outfitter claims not to have received my deposit for which he acknowledged receiving prior to my arrival. He or his wife would not return my phone calls. I was in a different location from their main camp. Hunt ended up costing me $3,000 more than it should have. Given the fact I had brought my wife I decided to bite the bullet so to speak. Hunting was very poor with few animals for the size of the property. Rainy weather did not help the water hole hunting either. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
The guide and his wife were nice people and made our stay comfortable. They were A+. It was pretty country and I enjoyed the privilege to hunt a private ranch. |

| Why? |
Myself and two other hunters had price increases after we got to camp. Low elk numbers don't justify the 5 digit hunt cost. |

I resent the fact the outfitter Mick Chapel would not return my phone calls to me personally about supposedly not receiving my deposit after acknowledging having received it in a letter prior to my arrival in this remote camp. I ended up paying more for this hunt then I was supposed too. I would never hunt with them again. ____________________________________________________________________________
Rebuttal Comments:
This whole deal started two years ago when Ron Serwa Booked an archery elk hunt with me. Several weeks later, a friend of his wanted to accompany him. Unfortunately we were unable to obtain a tag for the same public land hunt Ron had booked, so we agreed that he would hunt a private ranch I have leased in unit 13 at the same time. As the hunt turned out, Ron killed a small 6x6 and his friend killed a much bigger 6x6, 330 plus or minus on the private ranch. So Ron, before leaving, left me a deposit for himself to hunt the private ranch for 14 days 1x1 and one non-hunter in September of the next year. We require payment in full 30 days prior to the hunt. He did not comply by sending the money. Then upon arrival, when he was asked for the money, he claimed there was discrepancy in the amount. So his guide Rick Ortega called me late at night, as I am also guiding and hard to reach in September. I told him to collect the amount owed and if Ron could show us a cancelled check or proof that he had paid a larger deposit after returning home, we would gladly refund the amount of the discrepancy. That offer still stands today.
The hunt took place. The only instance that I am aware of is one evening Ron was sitting at a windmill close to the main camp (Rick and his wife's home) where the people at camp could see what was happening. The cook, Ron's wife, one of the other hunters, and at least one of the guides watched 50 head of elk converge on the windmill with one large bull, 340 class 7x7. All witnesses were in disbelief that he did not shoot. He later said the bull was too small. After the hunt ended and Ron was at home, I personally called his home to see if he had found a cancelled check or proof of any kind that he had paid a larger deposit. I am still waiting for a return phone call. I first became aware that Ron was dissatisfied with his hunt after receiving a faxed copy of the Hunting Report filed by Ron from another subscriber who had hunted the same ranch at the same time as Ron's friend and incidentally has rebooked the private ranch for this year. He also wanted to book the private ranch for last year, but was fortunate enough to draw a public permit instead. I am more than willing to clear up any problems or hard feeling that Ron might have. We run a legitimate, reputable, outfitting business in New Mexico, Arizona, and Old Mexico and never like to send a dissatisfied customer home.
We have a group of heart doctors that hunt this ranch and have hunted it for the last six years. They are from Columbia, South Carolina. Within one week of Ron's departure, Dr. Rick Umbach killed a beautiful 6x6 that scored 380 3/3. He can be reached at 803-787-4164. Before that, Dr. CW Hendricks killed a 6x6 with some broken points. He can be reached at 803-786-1576. They should be able to clear up an discrepancies over the quality of the elk hunting on this ranch as they have all rebooked it for their seventh year in a row.
In the future, it would probably be a good idea for Ron or any other hunter with a discrepancy or complaint about his hunt to first attempt to rectify the situation by calling the outfitter and bringing it to his attention.

This hunt is the biggest ripoff I've ever experienced. Outfitter put me, as well as, 6 others, in for 100 percent draw unit when he had portrayed the hunt to be in a trophy hunt. I do not believe the statistics mentioned in your recent article. Out of 7 hunters in my group no one came close to getting a shot. |

Date: January 6, 2003 To: The Hunting Report From: Mick Chapel of New Mexico Professional Big Game Hunting, Inc. RE: Complaint from Robert Ameen
In regards to the recent hunting report we received from Mr. Bob Ameen, he hunted in Unit 13 which is one of the best areas in New Mexico to take a large trophy bull elk. This is not only our opinion, this is the opinion of the NM Department of Game and Fish and several other of New Mexico's top outfitters. The Acoma Indian Reservation is also located in unit 13 adjacent to where Mr. Ameen actually hunted which to date has recorded 11 bulls scoring over 400 B& C points.
Mr. Ameen left halfway through the hunt and then wrote us a nasty card. My response was an immediate phone call to Mr. Ameen which was repeated several times to an answering machine, offering at one point to refund his money in full with no response what so ever. This leads us to believe that Mr. Ameen has no legitimate complaint and refuses to discuss it with us. I can personally vouch for the physical ability and elk hunting capabilities of his guide who has over 20 years experience guiding elk hunters in New Mexico. One hunter on the second half of Mr. Ameen's hunt shot a bull in the mouth which was later recovered by some other hunters. The bull net scored over 370. My understanding was that Mr. Ameen was looking for quality, not quantity.
We never like for anyone to leave our camps dissatisfied. Unfortunately when you take a volume of hunters, you are going to find bad apples and I believe this to be the case with Bob Ameen. I have been outfitting big game hunts for 22 years, over half of my life. If we ran our hunts the way Bob Ameen has described, we would have been out of business long ago.
