ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I booked this hunt trough Seladang, Renaud Desgrees, following the recommendation of a close friend. The outfitter was Nepal Wildlife Safari, a company Owned by Thapa brothers, Raju and Ahmed, but they has nothing to do with legendary Thapa, actually there are very distance family. In Nepal you can only hunt in Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, a 1.325 Km2 area lacated in West Nepal in the Daulaghiri (8.167 m) range. The Reserve is divided in six hunting blocks and I hunted in Seng and Sundaha blocks. These areas are full of Blue Sheep, but only Blue Sheep, that is to say if you would like to hunt Thar you have to move to other area. Muntjac also has to be sought in other areas due to the extremely heavy pressure they have because besides the local hunters and poachers there are a lot of dogs that hunt for themselves. For the trip I recommend taking helicopter, it is very expensive but it would save you six trekking days. Some people have been told to trek these six days to get used to altitude. Sorry but that is not true, the altitude problem can begin from 3.500 m (in my case from 4.500 m) and the six days trekking is from 1.500 to 3.500, that is to say, you walk but you do not get any acclimatization to high altitude. In fact I met a Dutch couple that have done this trekking and the poor guy has to be evacuated the second day he went over 4.000 m. Another advice is to avoid arrival on Saturday, local holiday, because you would find that you have to wait until next day to do anything, and also allow one day extra just in case your gun permit allowance would need it. In my case I lost two days. The fact is that the permits have to be granted and signed by three different ministries. Another advise is to buy everything you need at Kathmandu, you will find the same you can find everywhere, quality and brand (North Face, Mammut, Meindl, Thermarest, etc) and up to ten times cheaper: sleeping bags, cods, trekking sticks, backpacks, mountains equipment, head lamps, etc. It can save you weight and in the return flight you can do as I did and organize the shipment trough DHL and save excess baggage payments. The helicopter dropped me on a hill at 2.800 m where the hunting team was waiting for me. We walked three hours to Dula Camp at 3.500 m where we overnight and next day we trekked six hours to where we set up base camp at 4.217 m. I would suggest telling the outfitter to have at camp a bottle of oxygen and a corticoid inhalant, just in case. The sensation of lack of oxygen can cause asthma attacks (as happened to some hunters before). From there we hunted (climbed!) all the neighbouring mountains. The truth is that there are a lot of animals but the lack of oxygen makes you walk slowly, so it can easily take more than one day to approach the group, because you have to let it for next day. In my case I shot my Bharal the fourth day but honestly I could have done it the second should I be less anxious. The fourth day we (Ahmed, Man, Lukenda and Tegendra) climbed four hours through deep snow until we reached the pass of the mountain and hunted the other side where we have seen two groups of sheep the previous day. We soon found one of the groups and Man (local hunter) and me made the final approach. Luckily we could shoot from only 214 meters; a very easy shot because the group was completely unaware of our presence and was feeding peacefully. The trophy was very old (13 years) and the green score shows 121 SCI points.

My hunting buddy also killed a very good ram. Tapa is now conducting his hunts in the eastern portion of the country, where game populations are low and where there is heavy poaching. Me and two other hunters spent the entire 10-day hunt chasing the same band of six rams. The western area, where game is more plentiful and where Tapa used to conduct his hunts, is now closed due to guerrilla activity.

The other hunters in camp and I were also forced to pay some unexpected
