Problems of Hunt: Highlights of Hunt: Took 155 inch Dall ram first day out. Most amazing and remote area I've ever seen. Helicopter access is a must but by no means does it make an easy hunt. Equipment Recommendations: Pfanner chainsaw pants or Mammuts. Swazi jacket. Think mountian gear and forget typical North American hunting clothes. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes Why? Clay and Jim know what they're doing. They do not oversell their hunts. The only way you won't succeed is if you get hammered by weather. The abundance of game is incredible.

Problems of Hunt: Highlights of Hunt: Helicopter to and from the field was excellent and game picked up soon after kill. Accommodations and food in the base camp were very good. Internet available in the base camp. Satellite phones carried by the guides for safety. Scouting prior to the hunt was excellent putting hunting spike camps in areas where game was reasonably nearby. Equipment Recommendations: A good sleeping mat is important. I didn't need rain gear but it is extremely important to have on this hunt. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes Why? Scouting, availability of game, use of helicopters to get into and out of hunting areas, very reputable and reliable outfitter, very good guides. Trophy handling was best I've seen anywhere.

Travel is through Edmonton then flying to Yellowknife, and Ft. Simpson. Nahanni Butte Outfitters picks you up at Ft. Simpson then a two hour drive is followed by an hour boat ride to base camp. From base camp you fly to the hunting spike camps in a helicopter. Scenery is beautiful. There were plenty of mature full curl rams and then in a different area we saw several trophy caribou.

Caribou - Availability: Wolf - Availability: Wolverine - Availability: Game Condition Comments: We were unable to hunt 5 out of 8 days due to rain, wind and no visibility. Hunted 2 and 1/2 days but not two days in a row. I missed the one opportunity I had at a shot for an over 40 inch ram. Outfit and guide did as good as possible given very bad weather conditions. Lots of nice older rams in the area. Due to bad weather we never got to hunt for the caribou.

Problems of Hunt: Bad weather kept us in a two man tent for 4 days and we lost one day at base camp before we could get out. Highlights of Hunt: There are a lot of rams in the area. Other hunters were able to take nice rams on the first day (before the storms). Equipment Recommendations: My best equipment was my DownMat 9 sleeping mat. 4 days in a tent without it would have been even worse. Good rain suit is very important. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? I'm going back myself. The quality of rams that they take is excellent. Other game also plentiful.

Problems of Hunt: None, we had pretty good luck with the weather and I expected bad weather at that time of the year. The weather changed often enough that flights in and out weren't much of a problem. Highlights of Hunt: This was the best hunt I've ever been on and can't imagine besting it. Clay and Jim run a fantastic operation at Nahanni Butte. Over 10K square miles of territory and they use a helicopter to get in and out of various hunting areas. Once you land, there's a 12 hour waiting period and then from there out, the hunt is by back-pack and tent. We were very lucky to begin with and killed sheep, caribou and goat all on the first day of hunting each species. We had a couple of moose pull Houdini's on us and then the weather set in. After almost a week, I quit being so "f*&%ing picky" and shot a nice looking 13 point Yukon moose. On the very last evening of the hunt, we hit the trail hard, got very lucky and harvested an old male black bear at last light. This hunt was like living in a dream, I was there for almost 3 weeks and could have stayed another 3. Good thing the NWT government only gives one species tag per season, otherwise, I'd still be there, going bankrupt!

Highlights of Hunt: Spotting band of six rams on first day and spending several days observing and figuring approach, due to their location and open terrain, making long difficult stalk and making a long 300 yard shot. I was very impressed with this outfitter. Lancaster Family Hunts is a family operation with Cam Lancaster as the "ramrod" of Nahanne Butte Outfitters. They have additional operations for other game species in other areas of British Columbia and Alberta. Noteworthy is the enthusiasm and dedication of the outfit, both outfitters and guides. They are also enthusiastic hunters, not just guides and outfitters. Before the season they are scouting their 10,000 square mile concession and know where the game is and they put you there. The guides are young, enthusiastic and experienced. The concession is large enough that they can move hunters around without overhunting areas. Of the nine guided hunts I have been on this was one of the two best and most efficient and organized. After two failed trips to Alaska for sheep I finally succeeded with this outfit. I would also suggest that this company be considered for any other Canadian species, not just sheep. I and two other hunters left base camp together for separate spike camps; one got a ram and mountain goat and the other got his mountain goat.
