Major Game Animals Taken: Goat, Mountain - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: 9 1/2
Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: This is my third trip with Munsey's.. I have had unbelievable success each and every time. I have taken a great brown bear, great blacktail buck and now a mountain goat. Simply said they have been in business for 56 years for a reason, they do it right. They do not over hunt their area. They do not harvest young animals.

Quality of Outfit: Excellent Guide/PH Ability: Excellent
Condition of Camp: Excellent Condition of Equipment: Excellent
Quality of Food: Excellent Trophy Care: Excellent

Airline Comments: We had terrible weather on the way to Alaska. High winds delayed our arrival at camp by nearly three days. We spent two plus days in Kodiak due to high winds. On the way home I missed connection due to one plus hour delay of red eye from Anchorage. It took me 37 hours to get home.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None
Highlights of Hunt: We awoke in spike camp in an intense storm. My first view was of more than 30 goats, they were literally everywhere. After a three plus hour stalk I made a 255 yard uphill shot in 50 mph winds. Goat rolled more than 750 yards down mountain before wedging in crevice of rock. On the hike into spike camp I had an up close and personal meeting with a very upset mature brown bear sow with two cubs. She immediately charged ultimately stopping at 10 feet. She made it clear that she really wanted to eat me!
Equipment Recommendations: Good rain gear. Strong 12-inch extreme mountain boots. Walking stick. Comfortable pack. Large contractors trash bags. Waterproof gloves. Hand warmers. Be ready to hike and climb. This is not a hunt for the faint of heart.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? This area has guaranteed tags. My experience is there are plenty of quality goats. All three hunters took a good goat in less than two days of hunting.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I reached the camp on April 20, after two full days of travel and an overnight stay at Anchorage. The flight was: Milan-Amsterdam - Minneapolis - Anchorage - Kodiak - Camp. For a total of five airplanes taken!. We started hunting the next day. With the Mikes Boston whaler we reached the Amook island, situated in the center of the Uyak bay. From the beach we began to observe the mountains on the opposite coast, about one or two miles away, remaining there for the entire day. Glassing for so long is difficult and tiring. But my guide has never stopped, always with his Zeiss on the eyes. He is also very good at identifying the bears even away. What I was not able of doing. It must be said that Mike Munsey lives in the area all the year since he was born. He then knows to perfection the best spots and where to look. The spring was still late with a lot of snow that covered the mountains. We continued glassing for several days, spotting a total of eight bears. A relatively small number that surprised even Mike but, in addition to the large amount of snow, even the weather sunny and almost warm, really uncommon for Kodiak, probably limited the movements of bears during the day. We also tried to climb the mountains but we saw only one small bear. Mike then decided to continue to observe from the beach and he was right. The morning of the seventh day he saw, about halfway up the mountain, a bear intent on pasture.Looking of good size he has decided that we had to try to get closer. After a walk of about an hour we arrived in the area. The wind was in our favor. Walking very slowly we came where the animal was sighted. After few steps the bear, which was lying in the alders to sleep, got up suddenly about ten feet from us, and tried to get away in the thicket. Fortunately it stopped for a second to look at us. I was able to shot at this point. The 375 belonged to Munsey Park ( the famous Mikes dad) has done its job to perfection, stopping the bear in place. Very exciting. After a couple of more shots ( just to be sure he was dead) we reached him. A wonderful mature boar, 12/15 years old , with a perfect light brown color coat, almost honey-colored. I finally got my kodiak brown bear, dreamed for twenty years. It's fun to say that, at the beginning of the hunt, I had told Mike that I was not very interested in the quality of fur, but I'd like to take a bear in a dark color. Needless to say that I am now fully satisfied of my bear... For this trophy I have to thank only Mike Munsey, for his dedication, for the hard work he has done, for the knowledge of the area and the great experience. Do not forget that he was always on time when we had to leave in the morning. I never had to wait a minute. I have to say that in this hunt the work of the guide has been determinant, more than in all the others hunt Ive done. My contribution was limited to a quick shot. So much that, although I can say that now have un extended experience, this is perhaps the only hunt in which I can say that I am sure that, without Mike, I would not take anything. Other interesting thing to say is that, despite everything that I had said, was absolutely a hunt who not requested great physical effort. Sometimes we walked for a couple of hours, without much effort, thanks to the ease of moving into the bush following the trails of animals (especially deer), another thing that I did not expect. Lodging and food were also great. I was in a very nice log cabin, built in the 2000, with electricity from the generator, private room and a complete bathroom. Robin, the Mikes wife, is a great cook, she made different dishes everyday, fresh bread and focaccia daily. Services that I think are almost impossible to find in Alaska. Last let me say that the nature of the island is simply unique. Whales, killer whales, seals, sea otters as well as thousands of seabirds and bald eagles everywhere. And the fish? The day after the bear was taken we fished for a couple of hours taking 15 cods and this despite being in a period when fishing is not good. Too easy! Got my bear I left the camp earlier, stopping one day and night in Kodiak, at the Kodiak Inn, probably the best accommodation in town. Not far from the hotel I bought some delicious smoked salmon. The last night at the Millennium Hotel in Anchorage. Very interesting the hall with trophies with the most important animals in Alaska. Was my 46 birthday and I enjoined a dinner with my friend Eberhard Brunner the famous wildlife photographer.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Without a doubt this hunt will certainly rank as one of the best hunts I have been on. Since I was a child reading Outdoor Life a Kodiak bear hunt has been my dream. I have now taken 16 of the 29 North American species. I have been on excess of 25 guided hunts. Some hunts have been good and some have been bad and a few have been excellent. This hunt is one of those few hunts that exceeded every expectation. Patience is the main ingrediant of this hunt. Every morning the guide and I would take off in a small boat, pick a place along the beach and glass for 10 to 12 hours. The day was broken up with numerous sightings of the bears. Most of those sightings were a mile plus away high up in the moutnains surrounding the bay. In addition there were seals, whales, otters, mountain goats and eagles. Our daily routine did not change until 2 PM on the eighth day. At that point the guide made the decision that the wind was right to make a stalk on a bear we had been watching for two days. We crossed the bay and proceeded to climb the mountain. At the base of the mountian was extremly thick brush and alders. At 1600 feet the vegetation changed to snow and rock. When we got to the ridgeline at 2,000 feet, the brown bear had just entered a large snow field walking toward us. The stalk took 4 plus hours to get to the ridge. Having a good rest at that spot we waited for the bear to close to two hundred yards. I shot the bear with 375 H&H. By 10:00 PM, we had began the decent down the mountain. The guide, Harry Dodge, age 50 and wiry build carried the hide in his back pack. Harry weighs about 160 LBS. and carried the hide and pack that weighed about 130 LBS. It was truly amazing for someone to carry that pack for 6 hours back to the boat. At 4:00 AM we arrived at our boat and went back to the cabin for a well deserved rest. Both the guide, Hary Dodge, and the outfitter, Mike Munsey live in the hunting area year round. Both of them spend the entire year observing and studying the brown bear. In fact Harry wrote a book "Kodiak Island and it's Brown Bears". He is a wealth of information on the bear and it's impact on Kodiak Island. Both Harry and Mike have been guiding brown bear hunters since the seventies. The bear squared 9 feet ; 9 inches. The skull was officially measured at 28 15/16 SCI which qualifies for a gold medal. This is a hunt worth doing.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
This was a spring brown bear hunt. It therefore differs greatly from a fall hunt when the salmon are running. Anyone contemplating this hunt should be prepared the same as you would be for a sheep hunt. You can expect to encounter every type of weather with a focus on rain/snow/sleet. Foul weather gear is therefore a critical component, for a comfortable and enjoyable hunt. I strongly recommend that you bring layers of clothing because spring weather often changes hourly and you could have very warm or very cold weather often on the same day. You can expect to spend long hours each day spotting for bear from a fixed location. Typically you will reach the location from which you will spot no later than 6:30 am and you can expect to stay at that location until 9:30 or 10:00 pm. A good day pack is also therefore strongly recommended. The guide will bring along plenty of food for the day, and drinks.

You will see many bears (actually the guide will usually be the one who see's them first). Do not become frustrated when the guide is not willing to attempt to stalk on bears that are located miles away or above the snow line. Patience is most definitely a prerequisite for success on this hunt.

I have nothing but good things to say about this guide/outfitter. It is clear that they have learned how to put on a great hunt during the 46 years they have been in business. They have an excellent concession. Historically nearly every hunter has an opportunity to take a bear. Ultimately the choice is yours as to whether that bear satisfies your personal goals. During my trip there were three hunters in two separate camps. All hunting is one on one. I hunted alone with Bob Munsey in the spike camp. All three of us took exceptional bears in the first six days of the hunt. I have enclosed a picture of my bear. He scored slightly over 28 inches SCI and 27 3/4 green Boone and Crockett. His hide was an honest 10 foot plus.

The only problem I had on this trip was with the commercial airlines. They misplaced my gun on the way to Kodiak. It did not arrive until late the next day. Michael Munsey had a good quality spare gun which he immediately offered to me. Fortunately my gun arrived before the 24 hour waiting period had expired so I was able to hunt with my own weapon. On the return trip the hide and skull exceeded 130 pounds and could not be shipped together on the plane. Fortunately, I had the use of a car on Kodiak, so I was able to make arrangements to procure a trash can, and a waterproof bag, separate the two and come in under weight. However hunters should be prepared to abide by the shipping restrictions or make other commercial arrangements.
