Problems of Hunt: Highlights of Hunt: Shot a 161 inch 12 point early morning on second day. Marginal hit. Guides helped me track the buck despite no blood trail. Jumped him at 5:30 pm and shot him after guides pushed him to me at 15 feet. They never gave up. Beautiful cape and great rack. Equipment Recommendations: Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? Steve doesn't over sell his leases. You will get a chance at a good buck. From my observation, he leave 1-2 bucks in the field for every one he takes. Not greedy. Cares about his hunters and has tons of repeat clients. Best outfitter I know of 20-plus I've hunted with. I'll be back.

Due to coming rainstorm, we pushed the buck early for fear of losing the bloodtrail. Game Condition Comments: Steve is the most honest outfitter I've ever hunted with. Problems of Hunt: Went very smoothly. We stayed in a motel and ate in a very small town. Both were adequate especially considering that was the only way to stay near the hunting area. Of the eight hunters in camp, three shot animals that were over 150, three shot animals over 140, I shot a 135 eight pointer but passed a over 140 deer earlier in the week. The hunter that did not tag out passed a very good buck on the first day. The outfitter offered him a very generously discounted hunt in the future even though he had no obligation to do so and there was no complaint.

The owner, Steve Purviance, runs whitetail hunts in Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Kansas. I hunted his Kansas whitetails in 2003. I have rebooked for 2004. Steve has many properties throughout Unit 15 and 16. He has access to landowner tags. I had been tracking his success for two years prior to booking and I was extremely impressed. My hunt was just as impressive.

Problems of Hunt: None. Highlights of Hunt: Simply put, Mt. Hide does not overbook or overhunt its properties. I had one entire piece of property to myself. And there was another piece of land I could have hunted had I not harvested my 150 plus class eight point (12-inch G2s). Every hunter but one harvested a buck they were very happy with. That hunter was holding out for something special. Every day 140-160 class bucks were being brought back to camp. Truly an unbelievable experience. And I have been blessed to hunt many places. Equipment Recommendations: Good optics and warm clothes. Kansas December weather can be very deceiving and cold. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? Only eight to ten Kansas hunters booked with many parcels of land to hunt. Some parcels are very large. Very rare to see an outfitter who does not overhunt. I was recently told that a couple openings do still exist for 2004 (would have to purchase landowner tag). I believe these are in the coveted Unit 16.

Steve has a crew of guides that he grew up with. These are some of the finest people I have met. They all know the land very well. They start glassing property in early August. They know the habits of their animals and even get some outstanding video before your arrival. Mt. Hide does not overbook their hunts, and it shows. They experience exceptionally high return clientiele. If you look at the website you can see the caliber of trophy bucks taken. I hunt from Old Mexico to Canada and this is as good as it gets to take a 150 plus deer.

Usually, I just send in the basic details on the hunts that I take, but Mt. Hide Outfitters deserves somewhat more. I was very impressed with the organization on both the planning and the actual hunt. Steve Purviance grew up in the area he hunts and has prime leases in three states. His grandfather was a game warden in NW Oklahoma for 32 years, and I expect that helps Purviance to obtain and hold prime areas. He and his guides spend a great deal of time maintaining food plots, feeders and stands while observing their leases throughout the year. His policy is not to put a hunter into any area in which he or one of his guides have not recently observed at least one quality buck in the 140 to 170-plus range. Because of that, some of his areas are not hunted for years. You can be secure that you will not be hunting a spot after someone else unless there is a good reason. Also, his guides, friends and relatives do not hunt his leases. A little more on my hunt. Mine was a rifle hunt in NW Oklahoma. I spent about six weeks last fall hunting on my own in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas. I arrived in Woodward, Oklahoma a day early at 9 pm in the rain, and Purviance was knocking on my door 30 minutes later to make sure all was OK and to give me information of the local area, where to get a license, food and so forth. It was good to see a friendly face after a 12-hour drive. Most of the hunters arrived the next day, and everyone was put in the loop on what was going to happen the first hunting day. After that, everything played out in precision. I saw deer almost continuously and shot a 125-class buck on the third day. I should have held off, but after a lot of duck and bird shooting, I was ready to pull the trigger. Out of 10 hunters my buck was the lowest scoring, but I am from Florida, and he was a trophy in my book. After 17 trips to Africa and the rest of the world I am just getting into this whitetail thing. If you want a quality hunt, I highly recommend Purviance and his crew at Mt. Hide Outfitter, as they are doing it all the right way.
