ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Hunting is my passion. My wife calls it an obsession. I spend all of my free time reading hunting books, hunting magazines and surfing the Internet on worldwide hunting. While talking to a booking agent about another hunt, the conversation shifted to sheep hunting. He explained to me that I had zero chance of drawing a coveted sheep tag if I did not send in my money. "You cannot win if you are not in the game". My first year in, I drew a tag for Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep in Wyoming's Area 2. After the requisite dancing and gloating to my sheep hunting friends, I started my research. I talked to the Wyoming Game and Fish department biologist in charge of sheep who told me I would get my sheep, but I had better get in good shape if I was going to hunt Area 2. I got a list of all outfitters licensed to guide for sheep in Area 2. After much research and phone calls to all references, I booked with John and Lori Porter of Morning Creek Outfitters. He said I could expect to take a 160-class ram with hopes of finding a larger one. He advised that I get in the good shape and bring the rifle I was most comfortable with. It would be a Sako 7mm Remington magnum. After months of preparation and anxiety I arrived at the Cody airport and was straight off to the range to sight in my rifle. It was accurate to 300 yards. John, having won many long distance shooting competitions asked me to try his rifle. With a couple clicks of the elimation knob I was hitting accurately to 1000 yards. I would hunt with his rifle. We ate dinner in town and drove the 40 miles to the lodge in Area 2. We would hunt from the cabin with horseback and four wheelers for a couple of days before heading into a tent base camp. My head guide was Robin Rick (John's sister) assisted by Rob Burgin. We only saw lambs with ewes and single rams. More important was the fact that my house in Virginia is at about 400 feet elevation. Climbing these mountains at 10,000 feet, I was sucking air and my leg muscles were on fire. John returned to the cabin that night with his assistant guide Luke Ellsbury. They had spotted a huge ram in an area known as Jager basin. He asked Robin if she thought I could make the assault up into the basin. She just hung her head, shaking no. She informed me that she nor Rob had ever climbed up into Jager basin and would not attempt it. I was politely told that what I had been climbing was a 2 on a scale of 10 and Jager was a 12. To make matters worse there is no way out of the basin as it is surrounded by sheer cliffs so if sheep was taken, it would have to be packed back down. After an hour of soul searching I piped up that I wanted to make the climb. The guides went through my pack removing every non-essential item, stating that every ounce would make a difference. At dawn John, Luke and I started our climb with John stating, "lets not let fear or common sense slow us down". After what can only be described as the most physically demanding thing I have done since getting my black belt over 20 years ago, we arrived in the basin just as dark was setting in. We set up a tent and boiled water for a freeze-dried dinner. At the break of dawn we woke to a snowstorm. Now we were stuck. We could not make the decent back down so we had to climb out over the summit, which I was already told was impossible. With the spotting scope John and Luke found a crevasse that they thought we could climb. Two thousand feet straight up and over. Since you are reading this, you know we made it, but my experience in Jager Basin will stay with me for life. (Even though we never found the big ram). The following days were the same. Up at 4am, climb, spot, stalk, and return to camp way after dark for a quick dinner. On day 13 I took my ram. It was a nice ram that scored 160 points. It might not make the record book but it is the most beautiful ram I have ever seen. I believe that God created the earth in six days and rested the seventh. At 11pm on or the sixth day he hand all the boulders, shale, rocks, and debris leftover. He dumped it in various places and called it sheep country. So if you like having your lungs burn as if inhaling kerosene, your leg muscles burn as if on fire, every other muscle in your body feel like you went a few rounds with Mike Tyson, climbing areas that a sane mountain goat would laugh at, you might be a sheep hunter. I cannot wait to do it again.
