Condition Comments: |
The game at Sabie are of well above average quality. The buffalo are very nice with good hard bosses. It seemed that the buffalo as a rule were all heavy bossed. Cats were everywhere with excellent trophy quality. A hunting companion took a really nice lion with a huge black mane. Between three of us we took three buffalo, three hippo, one lion, one hyena and various plains game. |

Comments: |
I typically don't like SAA but this trip went without a problem. The only issue we had was once in Maputo we discovered that you can only bring in 20 rounds of ammo per gun. We had 40 so they took 20 round each but returned them to us on the return flight. We had been to Coutada 10 times the previous year and were allowed to bring in 40 rounds per gun so it must be a Maputo issue. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
This hunt went without a flaw. This was my seventh safari with four different companies and this one was my best. Everything from travel to trophy quality was exceptional! |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
My PH and I were in the middle of about 200 buffalo. After making several "moves" to get in close and take our bull the herd changed directions slightly and we found ourselves a mere 10 yards away from several bulls that had separated from the big herd. Eventhough we decided to pass on these bulls having a standoff at 10 yards with a full grown Cape buffalo had my complete attention. Eventhough we didn't take a buff on this particular stalk it was as if we did. Very Exciting!! I did manage to take a huge buff with 16" bosses and a 42" spread. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Normal safari equipment. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Based upon trophy quality and just the way the land lays this is a great concession to hunt. McDonald Safaris also operates very smoothly and Sandy is a straight up guy. |

This area is full of large buffalo. A friend of mine that was in camp with me took a buffalo that was just shy of 42 inches with 15 inch boss. We had numerous baits hung and had cats on almost all of them. The hunter in camp before me had three mature male lions on bait. I shot ol nomadic male with a full very dark mane, and when I left camp we ha two other large males on bait. Sandy McDonald was my PH and was always going the extra mile to make sure that I got my cat. This outfitter is one of the best I have ever hunted with. I will post a pic of lion also.

Airbus cramp seating would be a good torture interogation tool. Our leg from Minneapolis St. Paul to Amsterdam had american employees. There were several flight attendants that would have made good Gestapo officers, they could have literally taught the class. On a more pleasant note, the leg from Amsterdam to Dar es Salaam, was the most enjoyable flight I have ever experienced. The latter leg had Dutch flight attendants. |

A small licensing problem for my father had me a little irrated for the first two days of the hunt, but on the third morning I shot my first lion and that, needless to say, negated the license problem. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Collecting first lion and first leopard and shooting two buffalo out of a big herd. Had to follow both buffalo a long way to finish them off. 10 miles walking in 90 degrees weather with five guys and eight 500 ml bottles of water, the thirst was vicious. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
This was a hunt that I found on the hunting report Bargain Board and it was a fantastic deal. Helen McDonald of McDonald professional hunters is the matriarch of the outfit. I have booked many hunts where upon receiving the deposit, the outfitter stops answering my calls until 2 days before the hunt takes place. Helen is not one of these people, you call, she answers or calls you back immediately, period. This was my 1st trip to Tanzania and it was all I had dreamt and more, the prolific and varried wildlife, the Flora, the topography, Dar Es Salaam, the jovial attitude of the camp staff, it was all very enchanting as only Africa can be. My PH on the hunt was Peter Dafner, a Bavarian by birth who made the mistake of hunting Africa in the early 90's and went back to Germany and immediately started writting letters to various outfitters, begging for a PH apprenticeship. Peter has now been a fully licensed Tanzanian PH for aboout 10 years. Peter's ability to motivate his employee's and get along with his clients is polished indeed, racial tension is non-existant in his camp. The only thing about the hunt that put me off, came on the last evening, if you guessed gratituity, you guessed right. I was accompanied on the hunt by my father(as an observer) and a fellow central missouri SCI chapter member who also hunted a full bag license with PH Allan Vincent. When it came time to tip the staff we were given a sheet of paper with the camp staff's names and job description and a dollar amount beside each, the recommendation was $4,000.00 between the 2 of us(an audacious figure). Where the hell do these guys get off, pressuring us for shit like this????(they should pay the staff out of the day rate). The saving grace for the situation was that Peter, in our presence, called in the staff one at a time and handed out every single dollar of the tip money, and this was something that I had never seen before and probablly never will again. Every other safari I have been on, I left camp thinking that the camp staff was going to get stiffed out of most of the tip money I had left with the PH. All in all this was a fantastic hunt and I would not hesitate to recommend the outfitter and the PH. The problems were few and the highlights were plenty. Special thanks to the entire McDonald family and all the employee's of McDonald Professional Hunters, And special thanks to PH Peter Dafner,PH Allan Vincent and Videographer Timothy Dare. You all did a fantastic job and I salute you!!!! Sincerely JIm Lightsey

Sir I am filling this report because I believe that situations, like the one I had, should be eliminated from the hunting community. In March of 2005, Jerome Knap from Global Expeditons offered me and my brother a safari in Tanzania, in an area that was supposed to be closed for fifteen years under the FAO supervision. The safari was to have taken place in July of 2005, through the company of Sandy McDonald from McDonald Safaris in South Africa. Among other things that made his offer attractive, was the fact that we were to be the first hunters to hunt there. Sable, lesser kudu, eland and buffalo were some of the species that occur in the area. On arriving to Arusha on July fifth, we realized that we were lied to completely, by the outfitter and the booking agent. None of the above game occurred and the area was heavily hunted and poached and had heavy human presence. After a week into the safari, the company decided to pull us out and took us to Arusha, where the local partner of McDonald, Dr. Matufa, tried first to force us into giving him a settlelment, upon denying us our export guns permits and later asking the local authorities to detain us at Kilimanjaro Airport, where I had to bribe the local authorities in order to leave Tanzania safely with my brother and my belongings. I am enclosing copies of some of the e-mails that can give you a clear picture of the whole situation. I can provide you with any other information that you may require. Our PHs were Jan Schoeman from South Africa and Peter Bartosz from Zambia, living in Tanzania.
Dear Jorge, Sandy McDonald of McDonald Pro Hunting has just sent me an announcement that Tanzania Game Department has allocated them two concessions that were closed to hunting for many years because major ecological research was being conducted there under FAO sponsorship. Several universities were involved. The research is finished now and hunting can start. Because it is very late for booking for 2005, Sandy is offering hunts here at - for Tanzania - bargain prices and is willing to do lion, buffalo and plains game on a fourteen day hunt as long as the client buys a 21-day safari license. He is hoping this will induce some clients to book. Tanzania would not work back to back with your Cameroon hunt. The hunting season in Tanzania opens July first. However, Tanzania is a place where your brother Miguel would get his lion. A leopard here would be a dead sinch. Here is a bit more information that Sandy sent. Area #1 "Swaga Swaga" This concession has not been hunted for the past fifteen years and was set aside as a research area. It is hard hunting with few roads but exceptional trophy quality. Species Available: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Roan, Sable, Eland, Lesser and Greater Kudu, Warthog, Zebra, Waterbuck, Bushpig and Klipspringer. Area #2 LA1 This concession lies next to the Mikumi National Park with a luxury tented camp on the Ruaha River and is part of the Selous Game Reserve. Specials Available: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Hippo, Crocodile, Nyassa Wildebeest, Eland, Sable, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Zebra, Bushbuck, Warthog, Bushpig, Common Reedbuck, Duiker, Waterbuck. Options 1: 14-day Leopard hunt with plains game a $1,250.00 per person per day plus 21-day licence. 2: 14-day Elephant hunt with plains game a $1,250.00 per person per day plus 21-day licence. 3: 14-day Lion hunt with plains game a $1,250.00 per person per day plus 21-day licence. 4: 18-day Elephant, Lion, Leopard hunt with plains game at $1,250.00 per person per day plus 21-day licence. I am sure that Sandy will be pleased to answer any questions. Best regards, Jerome Knap Canada North Outfitting/Global Expeditions P.O. Hi Don, Thanks for your e-mail regarding Jorge Pasquel. I will allow you to make your own decision regarding this dispute. To put in plainly, this is the scenario....... · We tried a new area in Tanzania - Swaga Swaga. · The hunts were heavily discounted and at no time did we say that it was a prime area. On the contrary, my correspondence clearly says that the hunting will be hard. · We thought it would attract serious hunters who may have had the chance at the odds above average trophy. It is to be noted that some very good Elephant were seen by my operations manager in Decemer of the previous year and a 100 pound was shot as a problem Elephant in the same district. · Jorge Pasquel successfully hunted a good male Leopard, Dik- Dik and Klipspringer in nine days. His brother was working on a male Lion on bait. Jorge had unseccessfully hunted Leopard before. · The Pasquel brothers were not the first hunters in the area. There were other hunters in the area. This I did not know and certainly my fault. · Jorge Pasquel made such an issue regarding everything that he was unhappy about that I decided to call the safari off and have told them that we will partially refund/replace their safari but very clearly requested that Jorge stop his bad mouthing of the company to all the sundry in the industry. · Swaga Swaga is a marginal area that may produce the odd flash in the pan very good trophy (hence the cheap safari rates). It needs a serious trophy hunter who is willing to work hard for his trophies and is a true hunter. · Jorge Pasquel should have booked a $25,000.00-$30,000.00 Lion "safari" in South Africa if all that he was concerned about was killing a Lion and a host of other species in sixteen days. · I have offered to make good what I think is fair to Jorge Pasquel. If he continues to slander my outfit, then I am willing to go the twelve rounds with him. · I look forward to sitting around the table with him at SCI and hope that the judges of the case are true hunters and not office bearers with "political" aspirations. · My company conducted ninety successful safaris this year (2005) with true hunters who enjoyed the hunt as much as the trophies they harvested and will continue to do so for many generations and will not be eliminated from the hunting community. Regards, Sandy McDonald

Dear Jorge, I have received some further direction from Sandy McDonald. 1) He has asked me to send you the $5,000.00 as a first installment of the refund. Where do you want me to send this money? 2) He said that he wants to pay you off "as quickly as possible". He added, "I want to get this over with as soon as I can without jeopardizing my cash flow". 3) He refused too put an exact date on the complete payout. 4) He insists that you pay for the trophy fees. He says you shot the animals knowing you had to pay the trophy fees. However, he does state that since there is this complete lack of trust on your part that you can send the trophy fee money to me to hold until the leopard skin arrives in Mexico. McDonald states that the trophy is in Arusha. Apparently you have been sent several e-mails from Arusha requesting a CITES Import Permit for the leopard and that you have not answered any of these e-mails. Since these e-mails have not bounced back they assume that you have received them. Have you received these e-mails? What are you doing about the CITES Import Permit? I await instructions from you as to where to send the first $5,000.00 installment on the refund. Best regards, Jerome Knap Canada North Outfitting/Global Expeditions P.O. Jorge, Here are the comments we received back from Sandy McDonald regarding your recent report. Looks like Sandy would like to settle with you. I need to know how you would like to proceed with your report. I will be forwarding Jerome Knaps comments in a separate e-mail.
Sir, I want to thank you for taking the time to look at my hunting report with McDonald in Tanzania. I am answering now because I was out of town for the Christmas Holidays. From the beginning I was open to negotiate with Mcdonald. He has showed that he only wants to buy time, maybe thinking that we will forget our ordeal with him. Knap asked me to give him time. I did, and the only thing I got from him was a proposition to return to hunt with them in Tanzania. Do you think that after the dangerous and critical situation that we were in, due to the gangster-like actions that McDonald's partner did to us, we feel like ever returning to Tanzania or hunt with him any place in the world? Knap said that, and I quote him in e-mail number nine, "What Matafa did to you was gansterism." From the beginning McDonald knew that they would take us for a ride. He was supposed to be my PH. Knap told me in an e-mail that, "Unless he dies, he would guide you". He claimed that he was sick with malaria and sent Jan Schoeman as a PH. Thanks to him and the bribes that I had to pay, we could leave safely from Tanzania, along with my rifles. You can check my story with him. His e-mail is deweteh.md@mail.uovs.ac.za. By the way, he is McDonald's partner in Mozambique. As you can see in e-mail number one that I've enclosed for you, I was offered animals that did not occur in the area, like sable, eland and lesser kudu, among other. They claimed, Knap and McDonald, that the area was closed for hunting for fifteen years because it was an area under the FAO control. Another big lie. They said it was going to be a tough hunt and we accepted. As Jerome said in his e-mail and I quote, "Because it is very late for booking for 2005, Sandy is offering hunts here at - for Tanzania - bargain prices and is willing to do lion, buffalo and plains game...." The only time that he took my calls before the safari, he offered a full refund if we were not satisfied. By the way, he hid during the safari and his wife had to deal with the situation. He just called shortly before we departed to say he was sorry. I am enclosing some of the e-mails. If you care to have a copy of all the corresondence between me and Knap and him with the McDonalds I can send them to you. My brother shot three cows and an impala for bait. I had to buy goats and shoot a baboon. The area was crowded with people and almost no game, not even for baits. Maybe that is what McDonald meant by a tough hunt. My trophies have not been sent to me. Just in December they sent me the papers, through Knap, to get the import cites in Mexico, since they (McDonald, Dafner and Matufo) did not have any kind of special facilities to take care of the trophies. I am afraid they could be ruined. If his company conducted ninety successful safaris last season, how come he does not have the money to refund us? Mr. Causey, I am not a boxer, I am a hunter and I came from a family of hunters. What I am trying to do is avoid for some other good will hunter go through the ordeal that my brother and I suffered. I think that the industry has to get rid of people that use gangster-like actions to conduct their business. Hunting has to be as safe as possible. We cannot afford to have these kinds of people endangering lives and goods of good will hunters. Sincerely, Jorge Pasquel
Hello Don, Re: Complaint of Jorge Pasquel Mr. Pasquel's complaint is valid. The area, Swaga Swaga was misrepresented to us by McDonald Pro-Hunting. I believe that the concession was misrepresented to Sandy McDonald by the concession holders, one of who is Dr. Edmond Matufa. McDonald did not visit the concession and has admitted not doing due diligence. McDonald has offered a settlement to the Pasquel brothers. The first $5,000.00 of McDonald's refund was sent to Jorge Pasquel by us last week. We have, in the past, booked a modest number of clients with Sandy McDonald and they were all extremely pleased with their hunts. So I was quite comfortable in making this booking, which turned out to be a disaster. Best Regards, Jerome Knap Canada North Outfitting/Global Expeditions P.O. Box 340 72 Mill Street Almonte, ON KOA 1AO Phone: 613-256-4057 Fax: 613-256-4512 See you in Reno at the SCI Convention-January 18-21 We are at booth 510/512 on the Elephant Walk
Mr. Causey: I do not expect any more from McDonald or Knap. McDonald just told the SAPHA, that he had settled his problem with me. Not so. You have received copies of different e-mails that Jerome and Halina Knap did send me, telling me that we would be refunded. You already have copies of those. Not true. The facts are: Knap, on March 1, 2005, sent me a fax offering me a safari with the following characteristics: 1) An area not hunted in fifteen years because it was under the supervision of the FAO and doing research by several Universities. fact: Not true. It was actually a heavily poached area. 2) He offered game that did not occur in the area like: Roosevelt Sable, Lesser Kudu, Eland, Great Kudu and Zebra. Knap said, in his e-mail, that McDonald is offereing the safari at such prices because it is so late and it might attract clients, and not like McDonald said, that were looking for a cheap safari. You already have a copy of this. On July 16th, Tracy McDonald sent an e-mail to Knap where she said and I quote, "It is obviously not worth carrying on this area and have told the PHs to get the clients out of the area back to Arusha..." Once in Arusha we were told tha the safari was over. We hunted barely half of the safari. We paid the charter plane in advance and were returned to Arusha by car. You also have a copy of this e-mail. McDonald's partner in Tanzania, a guy by the name of Matufa, had us detained at Kilimanjaro Airport until we signed a settlement with them. We bought our way out. I have proof of this. There is an e-mail that Jerome sent me explaining why we were detained. I can e-mail you a copy. I think this, plus all the copies that I have sent you can tell the story. If you require more information I will gladly provide it. Jorge Pasquel

Just returned from a great trip in Mozambique. Hunt was booked through Sandy McDonald of McDonald's Pro Hunting, located out of Pietersburg, South Africa. Took his charter plane from Pietersburg to Tete' Mozambique and then on to village on shores of Lake Kahora Basa sp?? The cost was $1,500. Was then met by Nathan Askew of Bullet Safaris. Nathan and his partner Peter Kemp, spent the Spring building a very comfortable camp, complete with some electricity and individual showers and bathrooms. The camp over looked the lake and hippos and crocodiles could be seen from the high banks of the camp. The new camp is called Thuvi and has opened vast areas which have seen little hunting professional hunting pressure over recent years. As in a lot of Africa, the game suffered during the long civil wars that allowed the locals to shoot a lot of game. The game seen has great variety but still very wary. If this operation can continue to supply the government with monetary incentives, this vast area will only get better. We spent 14 days hunting extremely large crocodiles, hippos, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and assorted plains game, including sable. All the hunters in camp had no trouble killing crocodiles, with the smallest exceeding fourteen feet. Anyone who wanted a trophy hippo also took one. Elephant are scarce but very large. The neighboring camp which Nathan also hunts, killed a 90 pounder last year and this year they have gotten a couple of 80's. They also are allowed to take a few lions if the opportunity presents itself. We didn't hear or see any, but they have killed nice males in past years. The camps were well outfitted and the knowledge and work done by Nathan and Peter was excellent. I took a record book crocodile, a hippo, a problem "non trophy" bull elephant, Cape buffalo, impala, common duiker. We also had leopard on a bait and I saw but did not take sable antelope. Nathan had two of the three hunters this season take trophy male leopard. I highly recommend Nathan Askew, who is an US citizen, as a great PH. His hunting area offers a hunter an opportunity to take four of the big five. The camp is beautiful and the hunting is very good and will only get better. This trip is a true "old Africa" experience, with no fences, plenty of chances to observe Africa natives enjoying life in their thatched villages, fishing in their dugout canoes and tending their small fields.

As an observer and photographer, a once in a lifetime experience. As a hunter, twelve days of adrenaline rush. The camp was fantastic, Gerrit Utz and his family's hospitality at the camp were outstanding. The food, the wine and the conversation. Peter Dafner (our second hunt with him) with his knowledge, expertise and plain fun loving of Africa made it the best.

|
Just as Hemmingway said about Africa "you lay awake at night, missing it before you leave". There is no better place on earth, where wildlife, natives and nature function in perfect harmony. The respect for habitat, controlled game hunting and friendliness of the people is awesome. For those who are against hunting it is an eye-opener of how misunderstood the sport is. Of course, the outfit arranging the safari, and the character and experience of the PH is essential. We were on a "high" the entire trip. Thanks, Peter Dafner, Helen McDonald for making it happen.
