SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Due to the economic conditions in Zimbabwe, there is increased poaching pressure but never enough to result in any deterioration in the hunting in the areas we visited (both north and south Zim.). We noted problems only in the cities where the population was clearly in financial trouble. In no situations did we have any concerns for our safety or well being. The people were unfailingly friendly, courteous and hospitable. There was no sign of any political problem in our day to day contacts. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Other than the trophies taken we saw incredible amounts of game and birds. We estimated that we saw between 500 and 1000 elephant in a 2 week period. Note: we did spend some time in the Matupula camp sight seeing near Hwange park. |

Zimbabwe is having obvious economic problems which cause untold hardships for the people of the country as well as the PH and the companies providing services. Mark Butcher and Matupula hunters, with great skill and expertise managed, in spite of the current problems in country, to provide an outstanding hunting experience, wonderful accommodations, good food, and superlative service. We essentially ran 2 safaris simultaneously with 2 PHs and 2 cars. My wife, son, and guest (non hunters) were royally entertained with game drives, visits to cultural sites, parks etc. while I had the hunt of a lifetime. I hunted buffalo with Scott Bailey and the rest of the time with Mark Butcher. Mark and I had hunted before and it remains a great pleasure to hunt in his company and under his care. Scott is an outstanding PH with terrific enthusiasm, great hunting skills, and a world class hunting ethic. He is going to go places and I suggest to all interested hunters, get on his list now as he will soon be fully booked. I look forward to with hunting with both of these men in the future and cannot recommend them highly enough. For those going on safari with non-hunters, this is the way to do it. Take Mark's recommendations. Your guests and you will have a wonderful time.

Like most, hunting in Zimbabwe this year we were a little apprehensive about this trip. Tommy Morrison and Mark Butcher had this trip so well organized that we had no problems whatsoever. In traveling by tar road from Chirisa to Imbezi (7 hours) we encountered four separate police roadblocks. All four times we were waved over to stop. They all wanted one thing, meat on the return trip. Things could and probably will, change. I would still go back this season if I could. The people of Zimbabwe need all of us to continue hunting this beautiful country... Scott Bailey is the most professional and knowledgeable PH I have ever been around. I look forward to hunting with him again.

Condition Comments: |
We started on the Mwenesi River and hunted plains game animals and bait for the leopards in that area. We saw plenty of animals that I wanted to shoot and a lot of those that I didn't wish to shoot. The leopards in this area were not traveling as the moon was full and they had plenty of rock rabbits to eat. The PH and 15 to 20 baits out in three different concessions and we had a large number of females feeding with small males. We moved camp the minute we had a large male hit the baits. We worked the baits hard in the area of the large male and he gave us the slip three times. The cat used the terrain to his advantage. This was an extremely large track and when the PH and Houndsman were on his track the three times we put the dogs down they were extremely intense about trying to get this cat. The cat was extremely good at getting away, doubling back on trails, briars, caves, gomos (rock hills) you name it he did it. It was a real chess match and he won. I'll be back for a rematch. |

Lost bags on Joburg to Bulawayo transfer and cost me a day of hunting and lost my bags on the home leg also. They made arrangements for us to hunt near town while they track our bags down. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Moon and wind. When I book this hunt again I will be earlier in the summer when the moisture holds the track better for the dogs or I'll blind hunt the cats and the baits will last longer in the cool temps. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Having a PH that loved to walk and track his quarry rather than hunt from the truck. Watching the PH and Trackers play chess with the animals we were after, lose the track, double back and find it. Watching the dogs work the track of the leopard and to see the Jack Russell Terrier ready to miss it up with the big dogs. Shooting the kudu out from under the Acaccia tree at 350 yards. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Take one slow heavy caliber rifle for punching through some of the brush that often is the only shot your going to have. I used a 300 RUM and I am convinced that it would kill anything that I was hunting, because it did. But I would have loved to have 400 anything when that large eland bull was looking at me through the Mopame brush at 70 yards. One other thing if you hunt with Mr. Ellement Sir, get in shape because he loves to walk. If you need sweet n low sugar substitute you need to bring it with you because it doesn't exist in Zim because the girls at Matupula couldn't get it. That is ok because Mr. Ellement will walk that sugar out of your system. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
With all you hear about the current status of Zimbabwe you would be hard pressed to know it while hunting with Matupula Hunters. They have plenty of fuel, their food was excellent and the presentation is creative. If you want something special they will do their best to make it happen. The girls in the office and the support staff have the required Zimbabwe logistics down pat. Mr. Butcher and Mr. Ellement and staff of PHs and trackers are very professional. |

Mr. Ellement, Mr. Butcher of Matupula Hunters and Tommy at Sporting International felt very badly that I didn't get a leopard and they asked that I visit them at the Houston SCI Show to discuss how they could get me back with them again to hunt a leopard. I felt that they did everything possible to make the leopard hunt a success. I told them I would visit with them again and assured them that I understook that I was hunting and not going to the leopard store to pick out the model that I like.

My first African Safari was fantastic. I would highly recommend Matupula Hunters. Chap and Andre were both hard working guides. Air charters and road travel went smoothly. My wife and I never once felt threatened or endangered in Zimbabwe. I will be returning with my boys to hunt and would recommend it highly. Hunting the Omay felt very wild and exotic, exactly what I wanted Africa to feel like.

The concession relies heavily on food conditions within the park (Hwange). If there is plentiful food within the park the hunting area can be completely devoid of any elephant during the day, as was the case during my hunt, but that's why its hunting right. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Conditions were good for the elephant but bad for hunting them (not the outfitters fault). An abundance of food, from late rains, within the park (Hwange) kept the elephant in the park and out of the hunting area, except during the night and I was not keen to hunt them this way. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Took the only bull I saw within the hunting area from a group of five bulls on the 11th day of the hunt. |

| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Most certainly, but with the knowledge that you are at the mercy of food and water conditions more so than with other hunts. Dry conditions last year made for hundreds of elephant within a few miles of camp, which was not the case this year. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
Mark Ellement and Willy Mills are undoubtedly two of the best hunters I have had the pleasure to hunt with and that is no "BS". First class. I had the opportunity to hunt with them both as a last minute problem arose with the hunter I was booked to hunt with. I was contacted by the booking agent two days before I left for the safari with this information. It was not sprung on me upon my arrival, which is a credit to this company for being forthright. I agreed to hunt with one PH for the first part and another PH for the second, as neither was available for the entire 17 days. Although this had no bearing on the success of my hunt, I would not recommend the arrangement nor would I agree to do it again. It takes a few days to get to know your PH and for him to know you and get in sync with each others hunting style and methods, then to change this and start all over again with a new PH just puts a dent in the flow and overall enjoyment of the hunt, this is my opinion. Plus you have to go over the "trophy fees owed" part (that is normally reserved for the last day) half-way through the hunt and again at the end, this is never a highlight.

Mark Element is truly one of the best all-around PH in Africa. His specialty is elephant, and he is excellent. Mark and his staff went way overboard to make my hunt an adventure of a lifetime. Mark is very selective, and he had me pass on several bulls in the 50-55 pound range early in the hunt. |

Elephant hunt great. Walked up on 61 bulls only two 50 pounders. If I'd hunted them more than four days, I feel confident 60-70 pounders would be available. 50 was ok for me. |

I could not believe the lack of any indication of a problem after all the hype about the "Zimbabwe Crisis." Grocery stores were well stocked and fuel was available. The people were receptive at least in the southern and western areas. I feel sorry for anyone who cancelled their hunt due to the hype.

I would like to report an absolutely wonderful experience and great safari with Mark Butcher (Butch) of Matupula Hunters. We did not know Butch and booked our safari through Bruce Grant Adventures International. Prior to our arrival in Zimbabwe, we took your advice and all precautions with our guns, serial numbers, and ammunition. We had absolutely no problems entering or leaving Zimbabwe, everything went smoothly.
Mark Butcher met us in Bulawayo and put us on the plane in Victoria Falls for our return. In between that, for twenty-one days Mark Butcher as professional hunter guided my seventeen and eighteen year old sons, Bryan and Gray, along with myself to a very successful safari. We also had my wife, daughter and daughter's friend for the first ten days.
Butch and Matupula Hunters put on a show. Their camp facilities, food, transportation and knowledge of Zimbabwe along with Tracy Butcher, escorting the girls, made for an unforgettable experience. We were all trophy hunting and my sons between them collected kudu, sable, impala, bushbuck, cape buffalo, Warthog along with some of the smaller cats and jackal. I myself would like to report while we were hunting near the Hwange area, Butch guided me to an elephant of a lifetime, weighing in at 74 x 72 pounds.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I've just completed an elephant and plains game safari with Matupula Hunters (Pvt.), Ltd., Box 767, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (booking agent Sporting International, Inc., phone 281.452.6223). My son Karl and I were met in Victoria Falls by Derek "Gomez" Adams, who at only 37 years of age is probably one of the most experienced elephant hunters in Africa. A native Rhodesian, he spent some nine years with the Zimbabwe Game Department with about four of those years spent as a culling officer. By his own count he has taken some 3,500 elephants personally, with about 100 of those being bulls in full charge. (He shoots a Westley Richards 450/400 three inch double, which was Pondoro Taylor's favorite gun for elephant and other dangerous game.) As a PH his first love is elephant hunting, and he knows his quarry only too well.
After the obligatory visit to the falls and the statue of Dr. Livingston we proceeded to the first camp, which is located about sixty miles southeast of Victoria Falls near the Wankie Colliery. Designed as primarily (if not exclusively) an elephant camp, it is adequate but rather spartan, with large wall tents on a concrete slab, with cold water lav, toilet and oil drum shower en suite. Illumination is by kerosene lamp only, so bring a couple of good torches and plenty of batteries. Ordinarily I don't like to safari in southern Africa in the heat of February, March or April (although I've been there in all three), but this hunt was booked to coincide with harvest time when crop raiding bulls emerge at night from Wankie National Park and quickly eat up the maize, melons and pumpkins of nearby farmers on the Ndebele communal lands. Consequently the farmers are only too happy to have you hunt on their land. Indeed, one got very upset with us when, having in due course chased off the elephants on one night we did not return to do likewise the next, when the bulls ate "every last one" of his pumpkins (which is what they call squash).
This night hunting for elephants is quite exciting, but also a bit difficult and more than a little dangerous. Consider this-- in addition to the usual hazards of stumbling around the bush in the dark, such as stepping into a hole or tripping on a stump or rock, you also risk getting caught in a poacher's snare or stepping on, or otherwise encountering, some of the country's less friendly species of wildlife, such as puff adders, cobras, gaboon vipers, black mambas and boomslangs. In the course of two weeks hunting we encountered most of these, having to kill a cobra in camp and running into four puff adders in three nights of hunting. Fortunately, each time it was near a road so we had a torch on either entering or leaving a farm field and managed to see them first.
I would not recommend night hunting for elephant unless you have at least a three-quarters moon to spot them. With only starlight to guide us (Matupula does have a pair of night vision goggles but they were not with our party) we hunted by listening for them. While elephants walk softly, the sounds they make eating, passing gas or stomach rumbling carry fairly far. You walk a bit, listen a bit, and then walk some more (three to five miles a night is common as you go from field to field). When the PH thinks you are near enough he turns on a powerful torch and quickly checks out the ivory. Judging must he done quickly, since even if you flash the light on and off as Gomez did the bright light is likely to panic or confuse the beasts. On one occasion when he switched on the light we found ourselves literally in the middle of the herd. Confused bull elephants began running every which way, including one which came straight at us. My gun bearer slipped my .411 into my hands before I could even ask for it. (Despite his quickness, thereafter I reverted to my previous practice of carrying it myself all the time.) Fortunately, we did not have to fire a shot. In the first three nights hunting we looked over 63 bulls using this methodology.
As matters turned out, I took my bull in the late afternoon of the fourth day near a waterhole adjacent to Vlankie Park. Gomez posts radio equipped scouts at several locations, and one reported the presence of a lone old bull who looked pretty good. We drove to within a half mile of the waterhole and quietly walked in the remaining way. The bull did indeed look pretty good, but we wanted one that would go at least 50 pounds per side. While we were trying to decide whether or not to take him (we were close enough for a side brain shot from nearby cover) he wandered off and proceeded to a mud bath a few hundred yards further away from the park. We followed him, poking our heads around in the bush trying to get a closer look at him. Apparently we got too close. He winded us, then caught sight of us, and finally charged, thereby making the decision for us as to whether to take him. An old bull (estimated at 40 plus years) in full musht, he was not to be trifled with. Although he had not yet put his head down and his ears back, the sure signs of a serious charge, at 15 yards and rapidly closing we couldn't take the chance of it being a bluff. At 10 yards or less I tried a frontal brain shot, extremely difficult when a bull's head is still up. My first shot with a Barnes 400 grain Super Solid missed the brain by about two inches. (Later autopsy showed it had penetrated about four feet of elephant skull, exited the back of his head and entered his back.) However, the shot staggered him and he almost fell to his knees, giving me the chance to put two more slugs into his chest as he turned to run away. Gomez opened up with his double rifle and my son with a .375 Weatherby while I reloaded and resumed firing at the fleeing animal. A 300 grain Super Solid from Karl's rifle nailed the bull in the spine, putting an end to his flight. I ran up the 70 yards or so he had managed to go before falling and administered the coup de grace with a side brain shot from about 10 feet. While not yet registered or weighed, Gomez estimates that the ivory will weigh between 51 and 54 pounds per side. This was a large bodied bull, estimated at between six and seven tons.
The next day we returned just after daybreak to remove the ivory and skin the elephant. We'd been there less than 20 minutes when a handful of people from the nearby village of Dete showed up with knives and plastic or paper sacks. By the time the skinning job was finished some two and a half hours later a crowd of a hundred or more had arrived, edging ever closer to the carcass. We were hunting communal lands, and under the Campfire Program the locals were entitled to the meat (which we would have given them anyway). As we left the mob engulfed the carcass. Knives, and occasionally tempers, flew. Within a couple of hours there was nothing left for the hyenas but bones.
The Campfire Program is working. Approximately 80 percent of my $10,000 trophy fee went to the tribal council, which decides how to spend it. (Matupula charges $600 a day for elephant only, 14 day minimum, or $750 a day for elephant and plains game plus $165 a day for an observer.) Over a million dollars a year comes in to the various tribal councils from elephant hunting alone, not to mention revenue sharing from the trophy fees on other animals. Some of the money goes to farmers to compensate them for crop losses. I've personally seen and photographed the schools, health clinics, stores and playgrounds built with Campfire moneys. Guess what's provided by eco-tourists? Zero. It costs $5 a head to enter Wankie Park and the locals don't get one penny of it. The Campfire Program turns poachers into game guards. (Our best tracker, Tete, was an ex-poacher.) Current estimates are that the elephant population of is about 36,000 and growing at the rate of 7 percent per year despite the 200 or so sport hunting licenses issued each year. Regrettably, at some point culling will have to begin again in earnest.
Our next camp was at Sedenda on the Zambezi River. Spacious thatched roofed chalets sit up on stilts at the riverfront, and the flora is reminiscent of West African rain forest. This is a deluxe camp with commodious bathrooms en suite with walk in tile showers and hot and cold running water. (But still only kerosene lamps at night, although a generator is planned for this camp.) Cuisine at both camps was most excellent, complemented by fine wines and liquors. (A hint: If you book a hunt with Matupula, insist upon having Gibson as your cook.) However, given the time of year (perhaps only October is hotter) it was very hot. Daytime temperatures were 97-98 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade, and it never got below 75 degrees at night. Some breeze off the river helped, especially during the day. Aggravating the night time heat was need to "tent" oneself in mosquito netting. This is a pandemic area for malaria, and prophylaxis is a must. While we were hunting with Matupula one of the camp staff was being treated for malaria and a small child in a nearby village died of it. He was the nephew of Seve, the tribal game guard who accompanied us on all our forays into the bush.
After days of cruising the Zambezi in an inflatable boat powered by a 40 horsepower outboard my son finally took a nice bushbuck. Despite the heat, he foot slogged it along and took a 54 inch kudu as well as an impala and a duiker. He could have taken but passed on a klipspringer. We had a permit for buffalo, but those in the area were in the 36 to 38 inch range, so we passed on those as well. We also did a bit of tiger fishing. Gomez kindly provided his personal rods and reels for our use. Tiger fish put up one hell of a fight, especially on light tackle.
In summation, I'd strongly recommend Matupula Hunters (Mark Butcher and Mark Element, founders of Ngamo Safaris run by the Forestry Commission, are the principals) and Derek "Gomez" Adams for elephant hunting, but I'd avoid the Zambezi except during the cool months of June, July and August.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW DOCUMENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Please amend my elephant hunt report of 3 May. My guide, "Gomez" Adams just called me from Victoria Falls to advise that my bull's ivory weighed in at 55 x 57, far better than the field estimate. Needless to say, I'm delighted!

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

I am writing to you to give fellow subscribers some insight into a very exciting way to hunt a leopard - that is, by tracking it, chasing it and baying it with the use of dogs. In June of last year I booked a hunt to do just that in Zimbabwe through Grant Adventures International (941-776-3029). My hunt was with Matupula Hunters. Leopard was my number one priority on this safari, as I had hunted baited leopard on two other occasions with no success. The first morning of my leopard hunt I left camp early in the morning with my PH and my son, Justin, to meet the dog handlers, who had an assortment of black and tans, blueticks and redbones. After a few pleasantries, the handlers proceeded to give us instructions on how the hunt was to be conducted. The hunt was dangerous, we were warned, because a bayed leopard, unlike a mountain lion, will try to jump over the dogs and attack their real aggressors - the hunters. If an attack came, we were warned that the person being attacked should get to the ground in the fetal position covering the back of his neck while the others in the party took care of the cat. As you can well imagine, our eyes grew as large as saucers after hearing that. I even spilled some hot coffee on my hands. At any rate, we soon proceeded in two Landrovers to see if any of the 30 goats that had been staked out for us on the 30,000-acre farm we were hunting had been eaten. By early afternoon we were at our 17th goat, where we found only a head left in the noose. The handlers decided that if we got going immediately there should be enough daylight to attempt the chase. I was carrying a 375 H & H, and my son was backing me up with a 7mm. The two dog handlers had shotguns. As soon as the dogs were given a nose full of scent, the race was on. Within 15 minutes, the cat was jumped from his bed. We had all intended to stay together, but in the process we got separated by 50 to 75 yards, and at one point the dogs ran the leopard right through the middle of us. Forty-five minutes into the hunt, the leopard bayed in a rocky cliff, at which time I was helped into shooting position. I managed to shoot the cat at about 40 yards. In the battle, one dog was killed and five others had cuts from the lightning-fast claws of the 170-pound male. Even though this is a more dangerous way to hunt leopard, to me it is the only way to do it. Not only does it create tremendous excitement, but it keeps the hunter himself actively involved the entire time. I was fortunate to complete my hunt in one day, but that is not always the case by any means. The hunter right after me got his on the fifth day, so you do have to be prepared to stick it out.
